With the prevalence of online gaming these days, lagging issues and problems are scorned more than ever. With games like WoW, SWTOR, COD, and Battlefield being some of the most competitively played games online, there is simply no room for the pestilence called LAG. Update: this solution now works for Guild Wars 2, Diablo 3, and DC Universe Online!
How to Fix and Drastically Reduce Lag for MMO and FPS games
We’ve posted numerous game-specific suggestions to reduce lag, but normally there are more generic solutions you could first try, such as:
- Lowering your firewall security settings, or if possible completely disabling it
- Shutting down all background applications (you may have anti-virus or some Java app running)
- Properly forwarding the each game’s respective port requirements (you can check for these in the game-specific posts)
- Check the stability of your Internet connection. You may also have to upgrade your plan. (No worries if you’re cash strapped, we have a recommended solution below).
- In-game chat may be causing the problem, if you think that is so please check our page on How to improve in-game chatting while reducing lag
“But I’ve done all of the above, and it still flippin’ lags! What else is there to do?”
If all else fails, we recommend ping-enhancing software. What it does is take your connection and tunnel it through the fastest route possible to the gaming server. So in concept, instead of going say from Washington to Adelaide to Bangkok and then back to California you simply bump a smooth path across the United States (or wherever your gaming host is) and hit your server quicker which in turn allows it to respond back to you quicker as well.
For this purpose, we’ve been using our favorite: WTFast LagKiller. We’ve used it for almost all MMOs we play, such as WoW, SWTOR, and COD and I can say we are extremely satisfied with it’s actual performance. You can try LagKiller for free here. Add to that, we’ve gamed in regions across the globe and experienced these significant ping improvements using LagKiller, more or less, each and every time:
From USA, NY:
Before PingCraft LagKiller: 250ms
After PingCraft LagKiller: 60ms
Improved Response Time: 176%From USA, VT:
Before PingCraft LagKiller: 303ms
After PingCraft LagKiller: 73ms
Improved Response Time: 176%From USA, AK:
Before PingCraft LagKiller: 415ms
After PingCraft LagKiller: 89ms
Improved Response Time: 179%From Vietnam:
Before PingCraft LagKiller: 875ms
After PingCraft LagKiller: 212ms
Improved Response Time: 176%From Australia:
Before PingCraft LagKiller: 578ms
After PingCraft LagKiller: 212ms
Improved Response Time: 163%From Iraq:
Before PingCraft LagKiller: 1201ms
After PingCraft LagKiller: 499ms
Improved Response Time: 158%From China:
Before PingCraft LagKiller: 927ms
After PingCraft LagKiller: 257ms
Improved Response Time: 156%
The numbers are very impressive, but what’s better is that WTFast LagKiller won’t get you banned in any of the WoW, SWTOR, GW2, D3 or other popular gaming servers out there. It’s completely non-disruptive.
So if you’re like us who do not have the budget to up their Internet bandwidth or buy additional PC/Network components, get started with WTFast LagKiller here, for free. We personally recommend it.
Good luck!

Err, shouldn’t the “Improved Response Time” be the difference between “Before” and “After” instead of adding them up? Or else it seems that PingCraft LagKiller adds more lag to the gaming experience, which is a bad thing.
Agreed, and thanks Marty. Already notified our editor to fix these typos.
