Fixing Skyrim Crashes, Freezes, Errors, Steam crash, No Sound, Lags, Choppy framerates
(UPDATE) The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Universal Startup crash fix (TESV.exe stopped working):
Check this out, this has been a working solution for those who have been encountering crash errors when launching the game. Before you proceed through the rest of the fixes here, try this first:
- In Windows 7, go to Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Sound
- You will see your default sound device. Click it, then click properties.
- Go to the Advanced Tab, make sure the default format is set to 44.1Khz 16-bit.
- Hit Apply/OK, then run Skyrim.
If that doesn’t fix it for you, run through the solutions listed below. If all else fails, be sure to leave a comment below and we’ll so how we could help. Be sure to check back often as we will be updating this solution list.
Problem #1 The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Crash Fix – Crash to Desktop upon Launch / Startup
If you’re game randomly crashes upon launching the game, ensure or try the following:
- Update your nVidia / ATI graphics drivers
- Turn off SLI / Crossfire
- Try using only one GPU first (turn the other one off via your graphics control panel)
- Disable anti-aliasing and filtering
- Disable V-sync
- Disable background apps, and turn off your anti-virus software
- Try changing the compatibility to Vista SP 2
- Exit, disable, or uninstall FFDshow (it’s an audio/video controller, check if you have it installed)
- Run through our list of general fixes, which will most likely resolve your problems
Problem #2 The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Install Error: “The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Install Fails, Cannot Install”
This is a Microsoft C++ bug so the quick fix is to uninstall your C++ files. If you see 2 instances of Microsoft C++, uninstall both of them; and don’t worry, they are easy to reinstall. There are also a couple workarounds online if you don’t want to uninstall them.
Problem #3 The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Game Freeze Fix – Game Freezes during the Intro Video
If you’re using Steam, a quick solution is to verify the integrity of your Steam game cache to resolve the problem. If it persists, update ensure that both your graphics drivers and DirectX are updated.
Problem #4 The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Crash Fix – Game crashes when launching / upon launch
This is a typical DirectX problem. Just update to the latest DirectX version and voila.
Problem #5 The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Graphics Fix – Cannot see main menu, Menu crashes, Dual monitor problems
A common problem when playing on multiple screens. For now, the solution is to unplug other monitors and play on single screen. If that doesn’t work, try playing in windowed mode.
Problem #6 The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

had trouble with problem #7 and this fixed it. thanks!
Hi everyone, I’m encountering a problem in my first cave (Bonechill passage) the game just randomly crashes (after 1-3 min) after entering the cave.. Is there any possible solution for this distrurbing bug ?
Same problem, I thought it was a config I changed (I enabled a few nvidia settings like triple buffering and threaded optimization) but it still crashes. Typical bethesda crap.
Try to force v-sync to shut off. Please check my post, I’ve updated it with some steps to follow to disable v-sync.
I will try it next time, I’ll let you know
This same thing is happening to me. Specifically after you cross the drop bridge in the first cave and the cave collapses behind you. It’s always at the same spot.
Same exact problem, tried the sound thing didn’t work. This is really annoying. Getting tired of developers leaving PC gamers out of their consideration
Suffering from the same issue – tried to turn v-sync off but it didnt showed any effect to the crash. i would say we just avoid the cave for now
Having same issue (I think) where I kill the frost Drugan dude in the cave, then hit the switch and go through the raised door. Once I got through I took the skull that was on the plinth, along with the flowers (in case the skull stank!) and then left the cave through the back entrance.
Game loaded out back to Skyrim, BUT my map was now red (no map background, just icons) and I wasn’t able to go anywhere without crashing to desktop.
Now whenever I try to load the game, using a previous save too in case that one had been corrupted, I get the same results … so my previous play is null and void right now.
Same here. As soon as you cross the bridge and the rock drops on it, then the guy starts talking, the game just freezes up. At least I can CTRL-SHIFT-ESC to get Task Manager and kill it.
And you CAN’T “just avoid the cave”. It’s a required part of the route out of there.
Solution for the crash in the intro after the bridge collapses/gets hit by the rock.
I ran way into the other corner of the cave and did not look back towards the bridge area and waited for the NPC guy to say his lines (something like: “well we’re not going that way now”) and got past it. I can;t be sure but have a feeling the further away you get from that event and maybe not looking at it when it happens will help, it worked for me.
I updated my Video drivers, that didn’t help.
BUT… yeah, if you just go into that cave and head for the exit to it, don’t look back, it worked for me too. Got past it and playing fine now.
I use quick save/load options, mine crashes every 5-10 mins, i just quick save after ever cleared room.
eventually, though, my game crashed all together, so lets see if i can quick load still?…
Please hold while i check………..
Yes, you can see the quick save in the Load section when you re-launch.
I have a similar problem to crashing but in the middle of the game my game freezes and i cant close it or go to my desktop im guessing becauase ive played for about 14 minutes and it frezzes and i have to restart my PC
Ive been lagging and freezing waaay too much. But my system is PS3. Is there any solution for the PS3 version? i know there was one for xbox, but idk abt the PS3. I don’t want to feel like i wasted my money on a game i can’t even play…
Simple soltion , play the game in windowed mode ( just for Bonechill passage , then go back to full screen).
Can anyone confirm that this works?
My issue is that now ALL my saves result in a RED MAP then CTD. :S
CONFIRMED – This WORKS!!!
Change the settings, in the launcher, before you go into Skyrim proper to Windowed.
Run the game and it worked on my “broken” saves.
Thanks Mr. Freeze, stay out of Batman’s way.
Are you freaking kidding me? Why do weird fixes like this work? It’s like the sex change thing to get rid of arrows sticking out of you.
going to windowed mode in bonechill passage works, thank you!
You rock! I’d been looking for a way around this for the past couple days
I tried this, but did not work. I am assuming that is bc I purchased Skyrim through Steam and not as a reg. cpu game. I have logged in close to 200 hours and it only recently started crashing randomly (in last week or two). I picked up Dragonborn about a month ago and I was told that could be the issue by a friend, but when I tell the game not to load the mod. it still crashes. I have uninstalled Skyrim, then re-installed no luck, have uninstalled steam and re-installed Steam no luck. Hoping you may have a poss. solution.
Thanks.
Ok the only solution for the cave crash is to use the “tcl” cheat(noclip) and go directly to the place where the dragon is… no need to enter the cave… there is no other solution for the moment… untell will apear a crash-fix update…
Hi guys i have same problem with bonechill cave to fix this problem run the game in window after completing the bonechill cave change the mode to full screen
does 24 khz work? I dont have 44….
Hi JustinTurner, i believe 24khz should work as well, have you tried it?
Hi, I have a problem with dropping any item or weapon. In the inventory, it says to press to drop. But it doesnt react at all when I press the button. I tried pressing all other buttons, one by one, but nothing works. Please help me with this issue.
This problem has happened to me as well, now my skyrim is unplayable. All of a sudden my keys have stopped working. In lockpicking i cant press A or D to turn the lock. Furthermore on the map if i left click a town to fast travel it just returns to my character. FKN FURTHERMORE when i approach a fuckingggggggggggggggggggggggg Arcane enchanter and go to enchant my weapons the craft this weapon error comes up than i cant click on anything FUCKKKKKKKKKKK I have to alt F4 the fkn game so annoyed at this.
im having this problem too. has a fix been found for it yet?
my skyrim works fine bu whenever i try and use the pause menu key it just moves me backwards as if i were pressing the S key. and i can longer enter my pause menu. any ideas. i’ve done a system restore and a complete full unninstallation of skyrim then re-installed it and also a backup and restore. what can i do to reset all my settings on skyrim. this is for pc.
I’m crashing at random times but progressed no further then the Dragon attack! Best $60 bucks and 2.5 hours I’ve ever spent(yea right!). Game producers are getting more pathetic every year. At this rate we will have to pay for the game two years prior to work actually taking place on the game design.
Im having exact same problem, most commen it crashes right when dragon lands or befor he releases fire…… i did the sound thing and have no idea how to disable my v sync
Yes, i am havin sam problm it is crash and close w.o say anyting at dragon part
i had crashes during the scene right before the first beheading (80% chance of crash) then while running through burning house after jumping out of the tower. After I get free of the tutorial area, anywhere outdoors, doing anything, it will eventually crash. Haven’t played for longer than 20 minutes without a crash.
Crash description: black screen, sound track starts looping, complete loss of ability to interact with pc. Requires a manual restart.
Please, GCF!, do not suggest any fixes. I am very, very familiar with and have tried pretty much all of the suggestions here and none of work.
I even have skyrim installed on 2 different OS (win xp 32 bit and win 7 64 bit, first stored on a velociraptor second on a revodrive x2), both, same problem.
video card: hd 5870. Took out my linked (crossfired) card, to see if that would help. No it doesn’t, and this really doesn’t matter because crossfire is worse than single gpu at the moment.
I am not mad, I like trouble shooting problem. However, I am not sure what to try next.
Same problem =(
Perhaps its video card compatibility, Since my comp also runs a HD 5870…
I have the same exact problem as you, Merritt. Complete PC crash every 5-20 minutes or so. It happens randomly (not at any specific point in game), though inside areas seem more prone to crash than outside. My video card is a GeForce GTS 250. I tried updating to beta drivers, but no luck. I am going to try forcing off Vsync and playing in Windowed mode to see if I get any difference.
same if u know a solution please send me a mail it would mean ALOT
I rolled back my catalyst drivers from 11.10 to 11.8. No crashes as of yet, but will run continuously and check back in.
and crash.
no help yet?…..
got it, i re-installed and it worked/
I’m having this issue too. dragon lands and tries to defecate, But Crashes the game from all his straining.
Also the escape menu, inventory menu and map instantly crashes my game when opened(so screwed anyway if I managed to get pass it).
System:Xp pro,HD4800,Phenom II x4 955,4gb ram.
tried every fix know to Google(including enb and the 4gb loader).
anyone have any suggestions or are we stuck with a $60 ported tech demo? do any you guys have a quad core?
:/ hate to shelf another crappy port for a year.
I managed to fix this.
Look here : http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2281633
Thanks Laykun,
This fixed my problem and haven’t had a problem since. you just made the rest of my year and saved space on my shelf
. Clearly there’s a graphics setting that doesn’t like our ati cards.
I might try to track down what specific setting is causing it, but playing at default settings will do for now. thanks again.
My first comment didnt post all I wrote.
Here is the correct sentence:
In the inventory, it says to press R to drop…
Do you have a generic or Xbox360 controller plugged in? Or any other USB device for that matter? If so try taking them off first then restart Skyrim.
I am runing the game on PC, using only a keyboard and a mouse. They are both plugged in by USB.
I see foo has issues with it too. I am wondering if its just a startup problem, which will be corrected with a patch, eventually.
ive played my game for about 81 hours but now all of a sudden i cant use the pause menu screen so its lke useless. but before this happened i opened up skyrim and launched it but all the things were invisible i couldnt see my menu screen or my forge screen when i [pressed E but it came up because it makes the sound when u go over things u want to select. someone please help if you can.
This suggestion did not work for me. My keyboard and mouse are sort of non-optional, so I kept them plugged in.
Do u hav changesd key binding? I was “R” function assigned to mouse button and cannot drop items so I change key binding to default settings and now “r” is dropping items.
In my game it says “press R to drop, press F to favorite”. Pressing F drops and pressing R favorites.
Quality product there, Bethesda! I can see you put a lot of effort into playtesting this before you charged me $60 for it!
I had this problem too. It was caused by me switching F and R in the key bindings. I wanted f to draw my weapons and r to change perspective so the controls were similar to Oblivion. Apparently this changes F and R for EVERYTHING.
I agree. This error cant be something they just overlooked. I dont think they playtested it enough. Its a function thats essential, to playing the game.
Anyone have the “default format is set to 44.1Khz 16-bit.” fix for WINDOWS XP? i can’t figure it out, can’t find the options in the control panel.
Hi, I haven’t used XP for a while but I’ll try to check on that.
Thank you.
Hi, have you tried:
1. Choose Start > Control Panel (or Start > Settings > Control Panel).
2. Do one of the following:
- If the Control Panel is in Classic View, then double-click Sounds And Audio Devices.
- If the Control Panel is in Category view, then click Sounds, Speech, And Audio Devices. Next, click Sounds And Audio Devices.
3. In the Sounds And Audio Devices Properties window, click the Audio tab.
Check if you can change the settings under Sound Playback, or Sound Playback > Advanced.
I see 2 sliders that look like this
Hardware Acceleration: NONE—-Best
Sample Rate Conversion Quality NONE—-Best
Both sliders are set at best.
Ok, please try reducing both sliders or entirely sliding them fully to the left.
No luck im afraid.
On XP, “sample rate conversion” is equivalent of “default format” setting in Win 7. Therefore the problem might be another issue. Are you having crashes mid-game or when starting it?
Try to run thru the solutions again in my post, I’ve updated a few things.
K ill do that,
As for my crash: It crashes after the bethesda logo, to a black screen with the skyrim logo. i can’t see my mouse, i can’t alt-tab, nothing.
just a black screen with the skyrim logo.
http://cloud.steampowered.com/ugc/596953912611112711/AFD7A5A65B6EBD4372937AF75A2488C408967BFD/
this is a screenshot of the screen it crashes on.
Hey,
I’m having the same exact issue as TnuocEht. I also tried sliding both my sliders to the left and that didn’t help either. When I ctrl+alt+del parts of the desktop will flicker through the Skyrim logo for a few minutes before the game will actually minimize. When it does finally minimize music will start playing and task manager says Skyrim is running.
I’ve read about people having the same problem on other websites so I hope the details above will help to find a solution.
@jdizzle07 Bethesda has yet to find a solution. I have been emailing support back and forth for a while. I have heard that if you stare at the dragon logo for 10min it will work. If that doesn’t work we may need to wait for a patch or update. Or (in my case) Nvidia needs to update the XP drivers.
My game crashes in the opening scene, when the npc- and my character are getting of the horse-wagon the three other npc and my slides of the back of the wagon and you can’t move.
Is there some other people haveing the same problem?
Or if someone knows what to do pleas tell, because I’m dying to play this game!
I’ve updated the list of fixes. Have you tried disabling V-sync? How about the sound fix? Those are the most common solutions right now.
I’m having a similar problem. During the intro my computer repeatedly completely crashes (not to desktop but to reboot). It always happens while riding in the cart… My specs are over the recommended. I’ve tried the sound issue but that’s not it. I’ve tried to disable V-sync, but I can’t figure out how to do step 5:
5.Under “1. Select a program…”, click “Add”, navigate to your installation folder and navigate to the application / exe file
After I click “Add” an enormous menu opens in which for the life of me, I can’t find my “installation folder” If anyone can help my ignorance I’d much appreciate it… tia
The game appears to be functioning although no sound except for when the Bethesda logo comes up when I launch the game, and that the game is in total limbo during the opening wagon scene after they reach the town. Will force disabling V-sync fix any of this? It’s just all very strange! Thanks.
Same! It’s really strange, huh?
)
No sound, and only the blonde guy speaks (but I can’t hear him
It’s so odd, like the game forgot it was meant to do stuff…
I’ll try the V-sync thing, but it’s so annoying!
Didn’t work.
Nothing seems to be working.
If it were just the sound it’d be fine, I’d just put subtitles on. But they don’t work either :-/
There are a few of us with the same problem.
Only thing I can tell that we have in common is the Realtek HD sound
No solution yet.
http://forums.bethsoft.com/index.php?/topic/1258321-no-sound-after-bethesda-logo/page__pid__19165795#entry19165795
Seems like you have downloaded the illegal copy of the game which is packed by Black box.
My game started crashing right after loading main menu when I’ve updated Realtek HDA drivers to 2.66. Rollback to 2.57 fixed the problem.
I had the no sound bug, I went into the DirectX folder and ran the set up file in there, and the sound worked after.
So, i just downloaded skyrim in the Skidrow page (http://skidrowcrack.com/the-elder-scrolls-v-skyrim-retail-proper/). I installed it without problems, but when i try to open it it just closes!
I tried everythin i could: changed the sound settings to 44,1khz 16 and 24 bits, changed all the video settings, tried all the craks avaliable on the net, and nothing fixed it!!
The error message it gives me when it crashes is not helpful, but when i click in the “show details” buttom it tells me that it’s some kind of APPCRASH event…
Any clues on what I’m suposed to do??
MY EXACT specifications!
I got it to get past the dragon by using game booster to help out on processing turning quality on low and by running it both as administrator and in compatibility for visa SP2
Alan, that’s what you get for pirating, you dumb piece of shit
Actually, he was probably the smarter one out of us all. he didn’t fork out $$$$$ for a broken game.
it has nothing to do with the pirated version. actually, the razor*try it alan* version fixed 2 crashes I had to manually fix my first install. lol bet you wished you pirated it now don’t you, me too. I’m out $59 and I could’ve used that money for something important*like for toilet paper(oh that’s basically what I did anyway)*
shut it you sap!!!
Alan, stop stealing software. That is your fix.
Lol! Right on!
No, it is not a fix. The original game has way more bugs. Pirating is actually less buggy.
Sigh… game starts fine.
I can actually play, (reached the first town) but then when I “Continue” the game at a later time, the game shuts down on the loading screen.
Any advice? I have the latest graphic Driver. Settings are set to the default setting of “Medium”. My audio is at 44.1 16bit. I don’t know what to do… help?
I got skyrim on steam, and when I click on the play button it brings me to the launcher, and then i click play on the launcher. Launcher closes, and the spinning wheel beside my mouse appears, stays and then leaves after a few seconds. Long story short I cant get through the launcher.
I tired EVERYTHING on the crashfixes page for Skyrim and the game still crashed immediately after using the launcher. Then I decided to just launch (i.e., double-click) the TESV.exe separately and IT WORKED! (This is the retail version, installed through Steam, so I don’t know if the TESV.exe file will work with the actual Steam version.) I use the Skyrim launcher for the basic options settings but launch Skyrim with TESV.exe. Then I can change settings within the game. Try this and see if it works for you.
Well, now I have found the real problem: Threatfire! I totally uninstalled Threatfire and now everything works … even games I could not get to work, like Medal of Honor: Airborne. My advice, dump Threatfire. It is just not worth it.
THANK DAWKINS I found this forum…I had tried everything I thought possible to play Skyrim, but Threatfire thwarted at every turn. Thanks for the tip!
Hey, my game brings up the start menu fine, nut the moment I press play it just goes away. Do you guys have any ideas? I tried resetting the audio thing too.
Thanks!
I had the same problem – disabled my anti virus(?) and was able to start the game… but now having the sound problem – I can hear the sound during the intro but thats it.
updated my graphic drivers to latest , started in lowest settings and ultra and same … i start new game and i hear the cut scene but i only see red flash or bit of wire frame of the map etc i need to ctrl ,alt, del to escape the screen or my pc freezes … i7 64 2600k gtx 580 sli so its not my com issue and im not sure where to go from here ?
Immediately after the Bethesda logo, the game crashes to the Desktop.
I tried updating both my Nvidia (285.58) and Realtek Drivers, as well as direct x. I also tried disabling Vsync to no avail.
As I’m using Windows XP SP3 I’m unable to edit the audio output rate. I tried reducing Hardware Acceleration as well as Sample Rate Conversion, but the crash still occured.
Any help you can provide would be appreciated.
Robo!! My games crashes at the exact same place as yours, Im still lv 1 etc etc. Went to Bonechill Passage. After killing the first 2 wolves my game crashes. No error message. My game just closes. I dont know what to do! I want to see the dragon : / please help guys, please.
I’m experiencing some odd stuff too.
My game freezes up sometimes for a couple of seconds, and then keeps on playing. it mostly happens when I’m outside in large areas. I’ve tried playing with the lowest settings, still does so. My graphics card is a radeon 5770 1gb, and I have 3gb ram and a decent intel core 2 duo processor.
Also, now it’s crashing to desktop at one point. It’s when I’m close to the 7000 steps on my way to the greybeards. it just shuts down the game and goes to desktop, no error messages, nothing.
Help?!?
Oh btw I’ve disabled vertical sync in the ini, updated drivers, lowered sound quality (winxp).. Still having both problems
I am having the exact same problem, almost never happens inside a building.
i have athlon 64 X2 6000 oc @3.2ghz 2GB ram and geforce gts 250 running xp
i can put settings on high, frame rate is almost the same but freezes for 2 – 4 seconds just the same
i have also disabled vertical sync in the ini, updated drivers, lowered sound quality and played around with nvidia control panel settings
the game is playable, but only just, but inside buildings it runs like a scalded dog
it’s fairly annoying yes.
My crashing problem is gone for now – loaded an earlier savegame and was able to pass the place where it used to crash.
Still getting the 2-4 seconds freezing. DO NOT WANT.
maybe it’s an XP thing, seeing as you’re also running xp? would love for one of the techies to have a look at this
Having same problem!!!! help!
Same problem, i think its happening with most xp users
I have the same problem with 2 sec freezing. But I am runing it on vista.
im considering installing windows 7 on my 2nd hard drive
i will post back if i see any improvement, i cant be arsed to do it today tho lol
if anyone finds a solution it would be greatly appreciated if you could let us know
it maybe xp cos you are using intel ati, and im using amd nvidia and we have same problem. but someone else is on vista, hmmmmm i dunno lol
Bad news, no one can fix it and its system problem.
I many ppl in bethesda forum with the same problem, tried everything i found and nothing fix it.
Lets wait the patch.
ITS NOT A SYSTEM PROBLEM.
PPL with xp vista and seven have it.
yo, installed on my laptop with windows 7, runs quite good high/medium no crashing, woop.
i would much prefer to play on my pc as it has better graphics card but but slower ram and cpu lol but im upgrading my pc to quad core 8gb ram in a week or two so il put 7 on then.
Just thought i’d chip in to say i’m having the same 3-5 second freezes.
I’m using a nvidia 8800GT with an AMD Dual core 2,8Ghz winXP sp3, and just did a fresh re-format and clean install. have tried every setting i can with no luck. Have tried with anti virus disabled. i can run at 60fps no problem, just this freeze thingy, annoying as hell
same here, 5770 | amd x2 64 6000. winXPhome 32bit sp3 | sound is realtek onboard |
freezes somtimes for 4 sec., only outside, i’ve tried every fix i found and lots of other things (bios, different drivers for graphic, sound,,ahh shit, i tried different drivers for everthing.), playing around with the ini files, do this do that… nothing. my cpu have 80% during playin and when the games freezes the cpu going to 100%.
Scott
). Hope this helps!
I have the exact same problem! I have no idea how to fix the slowing but I’m assuming that by “running like a scalded dog” you mean going abnormally fast and that is a simple fix.
I have this problem in a lot of my games, especially Dragon Age 2. Whenever the speeding up starts open Task Manager (while Skyrim is still up) and find Skyrim under processes (probably called TESV.exe). Right-click and select affinity, then uncheck one of the boxes. That seems to work for any games that tend to speed everything up. It even worked when Dragon Age: Origins was having slowing down problems (although this doesn’t fix my slowing down problems for Skyrim
See if this helps: http://www.skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=170
“These setting for Skyrim help to increase memory usage (default game limit is 500-600 megabytes) and reduce ~5 seconds lags.
Open skyrim.ini and modify these values (they are and category may not exist at all, add new):
[Papyrus]
iMinMemoryPageSize=100000
iMaxMemoryPageSize=5000000
iMaxAllocatedMemoryBytes=1800000000
WARNING! Do not increase iMaxAllocatedMemoryBytes value, because memory fragmentation may cause the game to crash or freeze.”
I’m going to be trying this once I get home. Hope it will help.
i tried these 3 lines, and i got lots of purple textures!
I’m getting the same error as well. Only happens in outdoor areas. Game runs very smooth in towns and underground. I’ve tried doing the audio fix, vsync, drivers, directx, lowest possible settings.
I’m also using xp, my computer easily passes the minimum requirements. Seems to be a game issue, not system.
im going to install on my 2.9 phenom dual core, 4gb ddr3, radeon hd 5450 1GB laptop which has a 30% slower graphics card than my PC but a 20% faster CPU than my PC.
its running win 7, see if theres any improvement.
Exact same here. Same graphics card too.
Looking at replies so far, there is no fix, just hopes for a patch that resolves. :/
I experienced the short 3 second freezes too in Skyrim. Very annoying, game almost unplayable…
After a few hours of trying all possible settings, I found the most simple solution for this problem => switching from winXP to win7. Read details here: http://www.thenexusforums.com/index.php?/topic/458231-graphical-lag/page__p__3790638__fromsearch__1#entry3790638
http://www.skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=91#content
Use this link. It worked for me, no more freezing! Game is much more enjoyable.
There are tons of posts here…not sure where to reply, but I also have a 5770 gfx card with similar problems running Skyrim. I was able to fix it permanently. See this post:

Ok, I’m having a strange graphics error that I’m not really sure how to describe, so I’ll link to picture of it (had to take it from my phone since for some reason my screenshots refuse to capture Skyrim.) It’s not very clear but basically it’s like large chunks of texture are jumping all across the screen and occasionally I can see the people, wagon, environment, etc in breaks of it, but it’s so bad I literally cannot play the game.

The whole game is like this aside from menus and load screens and it makes it completely unplayable. I’ve turned v-sync off, set it to lowest settings, sound is set correctly, and I’ve no idea whats causing it, someone please help.
I have exactly this problem. I have the graphic requirements but somehow this keeps happening over and over again.
[IMG]http://i251.photobucket.com/albums/gg304/Bashu4fun/skyrimfail.jpg[/IMG]
I have the EXACT SAME PROBLEM. I’ve been freaking out because I haven’t found anyone else with these issues and the Bethesda support doesnt even seem to be working. I’m at a complete loss. Updated my graphics drivers, set the sound, etc etc etc. To NO avail. I’m severely disappointed.
If ANYONE can help with this problem PLEASE respond because this is just frustrating.
Same problem here!
It’s confirmed that my graphics card was the issue :/ dunno about you guys but if you’re on laptops and have itel graphics cards than you’re screwed.
I’ve been having this problem, I was convinced it wasn’t the card, how did you confirm it? I can see ppl in the intro sometimes so I thought it must be a bug, or else it would never show anything????? Now I have to wait till Christmas to play on my PC at home D:
I fixed my instance of the issue!
This likely won’t apply to all experiencing the issue but in order to fix my issue I had to disable switchable graphics in my bios. That is, I had to remove my laptops ability to switch between the onboard intel graphics card and the radeon 6550m chip. It has this ability in order to save battery life when unplugged (8hrs vs. 3hrs of battery life) and even though it was operating from the radeon chip the whole time I guess the intel was still influencing it. Hope this helps others too!
Same problem! Please help!

This is a video on youtube, the comments were from people that fixed the problem, just have to uninstall and reinstall your Intel Graphics Driver
My game keeps crashing to the desktop. I’ve done all the steps listed here to prevent the crashing, but it still happens. Can’t even get past the intro of the game when the dragon first comes in.
Any one have a solution to this?
My system is pretty good, I’d say, so it isn’t that. (64 bit op. system, 12.0 RAM, Windows 7, intel core i7 CPU. 920 @ 2.67 GHz)
I’m having the same exact problem as you. As soon as the dragon lands on the tower in the background, the game closes to desktop. I’ve done everything I can try to do.. I suppose I’m going to wait until Bethesda fixes all these crashing errors.
Best of luck to you as well! Hopefully they come out with a patch soon.
At random intervals, my computer crashes to blackscreen with a jarring, whirring, buzzing sound coming from the speakers. It happens sometimes in Oblivion, too, but it’s far more frequent here. Please advise?
I have a strange issues. After the Bathesda logo, the dragon logo comes up and the smoke/ mist starts rolling in, but it just stays there, doesn’t do anything else…it doesn’t look like its hanging, cause the mist carries on….but I can’t do anything, no keyboard or mouse commands, just sits there…never pogresses…any idea?
Same help!
any news about it?
PLz i use windows xp how i can change my audio for 44.1?
It is like GCF said:
Then Slide the Hardware Acceleration and Sample Rate Conversion Quality all the way to the left.
i have the same problem than lasse, scot and wolfaen.
I start think the windows xp is the problem
PPl say turn the audio fix but i cant find the place to do that in xp.
I’m having problems getting past the chopping blocks. The executioner brings up his ax and just sits, there is still ambient sound. I’ve only ever gotten past it once and the game still crashed. I’ve done most of these little fixes to no avail.
I meet the minimum requirements to operate the game, the only questionable aspect is my graphics card, which is a Nvidia GeForce GT 220M 1gb, which is fully updated.
I’m also running the game off Steam, which I would try to operate skyrim in compatibility mode in but I cannot.
Help?
I’m having this problem too and I’m also running the game from steam, please help us!
For me the game crashes after loading when I try to start a new game. Tried all the fixes here. I have nvidia geforce GT 220M as well.
Im running from steam as well, I have deleted the game files to see it that would work but when I reloaded it and played my graphics were completely whitewashed, So I’m in the process of doing it again.
I am having a similar problem, I get to the chopping blocks and the first guy gets his head cut off, then everyone just stands there and nothing happens!?!?! Audio is fine and video and performance seem fine, everything is seemless until this point. I don’t understand and nothing I’ve tried seems to fix the problem.
I am stuck at the chopping block also? Any fixes?
I changed my resolution which seemd to fix the problem
Ive played with the resolution and still no luck.
I was able to fix this in Steam by verifying the cache integrity through the game properties.
Skyrim crashes everytime it is about to get to the main menu. I don’t think it’s my graphics. I have a windows 7 64-bit, AMD Athlon II X2 220 Processor, ATI Radeon 3000 Graphics, HP wide LCD Monitor, DirectX 11, Realtek High Definition Audio. What do I do to fix the problem so I can play?
You have to set the audio on your system to 16 bit dvd quality. It fixed the problem I had.
My sound stops working just before they reach the gate on the wagon in the intro. The intro continues but is caught in limbo when the wagons hit end station (the vagons just try to continue driving).
I’ve tried the sound fix except updating drivers (kinda hard since I use a 42″ Sharp TV as my sound card and I havn’t found a way to update HDMI drivers).
I would be grateful for any advise on how to get the game running on a TV monitor (and sound system). Oh, all other drivers like graphic is up to date.
Hi guys, i’ve turned the sound to 44Khz 16 and 24 bits and still doesnt work. It crash when y click “play” and the beteshda logo dissapear. I’ve also tried to turn off the v-sync and disable the antivirus, but doesnt work. Drivers up to date.
I have Windows 7 64 Bits ATI HD 5750. T_T
U figure out how to fix the play click error Dova??
ok so my skyrim was a little laggy so i changed it to low graphics setting it then closed my game down when i pressed strart a new game
I am also getting the crash at the second wolf in bonechill passage.. everytime i go to attack or walk at all just before the second wolf it goes straight to the desktop with no error messages.
Hi,
I’ve got strange problem with Skyrim. When I run new game I see Skyrim logo, sometimes I watch a few dialog lines and game crashes to desktop. I tried almost everything (sound fix, reinstalling drivers and game, changing graphic options), but nothing helped. However, I noticed that when I order task manager to run Skyrim on only one core of processor, the game doesn’t crash anymore. Of course, it runs slower but is playable. When I reach autosave I switched back to 2 cores and after a while I got crash. That happened 2 times, so it’s not just an accident. Do you know why is that so? I prefer running it on both cores for it runs better, but I can’t, becouse of those crashes.
If you can please help me guys
That’s my system: intel c2d E8400, nvidia gtx260, realtek hd audio, 4gb ddr2 and Vista Home Basic 64bit
I keep getting a crash every time I try and open the magic window it closes out back to windows. Any suggestions?
I’m getting the same thing…glad I’m not the only one.
I’m getting that bug too. It’s really annoying, because I’m in the middle of a quest that requires me to access the magic menu.
Same here. It didn’t used to do it before, but after not accessing it for awhile it started doing that every time I try to get into the Magic menu. I was hoping I could start equipping the restoration spells I bought recently to heal myself… Maybe a bug with having obtained restoration books?
Hey guys, I just did something that seemed to fix it for me (I don’t know why it worked, but it did). I happened to have some spell books that I hadn’t read yet. After I read them (and learned the spells), somehow that allowed me to access the Magic menu again.
Try learning a spell from any spell book and see if that fixes it. I just hope it doesn’t start happening again later…
It worked! Thank you very much
I got the spellbook crash bug. The “learn a new spell” fix seems like a red herring. Comparing a few crashing/non-crashing saves, I isolated the issue:
Eating too much food gives you too many stacked food buffs, and crashes the magic menu
To resolve it, wait 720 seconds (12 minutes) and the menu will work again.
I just recently saw a youtube video that explained this. Just to test it out, I tried eating 7 veg. soup, and i got the magic menu crash. I loaded the same save, ate 7 veg. soup, learned a new spell, and still got the crash. I’m wondering if the reason that learning a new spell “fixed” it for others was when they fast-traveled to a town that had spell books, which during the fast travel it sped up the time for the food effects to wear away. So you’re correct; learning a new magic spell is really a red herring that I had thought was what resolved it.
Anybody know if there’s a No Steam patch available anywhere yet?
The sound properties trick doesn’t necessarily work, it just gets me to the next crash. I haven’t been able to get past the dragon part. He appears and the game crashes to desktop.
It seems there isn’t a “fix” for getting past this part yet, or at least I haven’t found one for it yet.
I managed to stave off a large portion of crashes by making it run both as administrator (that fixes the keybinding issues) and in compatibility for windows vista, and avoiding external cells when possible.
Same issue with the new game, dragon statue, and smokey effects that lead to nothing. I have even tried windowed mode, apart from all the other recommended fixes. I managed to Download a saved game online, but when i try to launch that, it crashes to desktop instead of just hanging there. I have worked on this for hours and have no luck. I hope there is a fix soon
Hey guys, I have a really wierd problem over here. Game runs smoothly, no crashes or anything but sound effects gone nuts. I can hear music and speech of NPCs but footsteps and stuff like that are on vocation or something. It’s not big deal but im getting tired of playng as a mime
I have the same problem as Bastion. All music and speech works (except the music tends to stop a lot after a fight or something else happens), including my own, but there are no effects or footsteps. At all. Can anyone help?
thanks guys, i never would have guessed the sound settings could mess up the launch.
Ok my problem isn’t as serious as some here, but anoying none the less. Everytime I enter a building I hear wierd banging sounds. Its like the back ground soundeffects have been amplified or something. The ingame sound ui is pathetic. Any ideas?
I’m having the crash upon start problem, but it wont let me reduce or change any of my sound settings. If I remove all of my speakers I can play the game (with no sound) but still cant change the settings. Any advice would really be appreciated
hi all glad its not just me
I have an amd phenom 6GB Ram and an ati HD4870. Its getting a little old now but plays crysis 2 on high with good frame rates so figures this would be ok.
i have updated my drivers, tried the sound settings and still it completly crashes my computer. I get a black screen or vertical lines, then the sound dies and i just get a rumble, forcing me to do a hard reset. Sometime i can play for 20 mins sometimes for 30 seconds. I had it on my second HDD then moved everything to my SSD ( a pain) and still the same thing.
It reccomends high, i have put everything including resolution to low. And still my screen goes blank and nothing works.
Am actually considering downloading an illegal 1 just to see if it still has the issue. Am beyond pissed off with it. Also tried running it with vista compatibility and preety much all suggestions on here. Any more would be appreciated.
11.10 was giving me very similar (if not identical) problems, so I said what the hell and rolled back to 11.8 catalyst. If that doesn’t work, keep going backwards. Updating drivers is sometime not a good idea if they haven’t taken into account the game yet. It’s a canned response that might actually do more harm than good.
I am having the same exact issue! At first I would get to the 2nd fight in the first tunnel after the dragon attack before the crashing. I tried the vsync tweak and thought I was home free, getting in a few hours of play time. then I was on one of the main quests going to get the dragon stone and it went into that phase where my main screen is a bunch of lines and my other turns black and I have to manually reboot (GPU crash?). I have tried the vysnc, verifying the cache, re-installing both the game and my 11.10 CCC and drivers, then 11.9…. I have an HD 4890, I’m beginning to think that Bethesda has no ATI support for this game. I know my CPU, PSU, and RAM are more than enough…
@ Merritt, I might try the 11.8 CCC, if that worked for you.
Im running it on a radeon 5850 blackedition, it keeps telling me my graphics card crashes and recovers but I know this card can run the game. Im wondering is there anything else I can do to fix said issue
please help!
It says “display driver has stopped working and recovered” does anyone know how i can fix this?
Every time I try to enter DragonReach or any major building that deals with the storyline quests it will go to the black screen with the smoke and it stays there i cant shift tab or do anything. I cant progress in the storyline or anything can anyone help me please email me if you know how to fix it my email is allen.williams124@yahoo.com
I have turned off all my vsync. Including manually turning off all the features on my GPU(annoying). I have also gone to the task manager and put it to a high priority. Changed the sound 16bit 96000 (someone else suggested it). My crashing seems to be more predictable. I can now get as far as the first building before it crashes.
I can go through the beginning cart section, watch the first bit with the dragon, follow the guard just as we enter the first main building (i’m assuming it autosaves??) I get a black screen and nothing and have to do a hard reset.
If I try to load it I get a bit of speech a quick look at the room then instant crash (about 1 min max). All my temps etc are well within limit.
Got it to crash in an exact place. Any one else have this section and any way to get around it? Do I have to continually change my GPU, game and sound settings depending on if i’m inside outside, amount of enemies etc?
Seems like it was released way before anyone thought of actually picking it up and testing it to see if anything worked.
this afternoon:
updated my graphic drivers to latest , started in lowest settings and ultra and same … i start new game and i hear the cut scene but i only see red flash or bit of wire frame of the map etc i need to ctrl ,alt, del to escape the screen or my pc freezes … i7 64 2600k gtx 580 sli so its not my com issue and im not sure where to go from here ?
this morning: (yes been playing around with everything for 10 hours etc to get it to work)
did a complete reinstall of windows 7 and wiped my c/drive completely … installed 258.79 beta drivers from nvidia that are brand new to work for this but nothing works still !!!!
£39.99 and afternoon off work to play this .. all this is ridiculous ,i have had my £2000 gaming pc for 4 months and its the buying a new game and pissing around with all this crap for hours or days untill a game gets a patch etc …. seriously thinking to sell up and take a loss on it … much much much easier to play games with a console as i dont actually do nothing but IT lessons… it aint gaming no way,its toss !!!
cant even take the game back for refund tommorow as its pc on steam and useless
I have a very good rig with latest drivers etc. But I keep getting random bluescreens and the games also randomly shuts off to the desktop. I was playing with speakers first and by using the sound trick and substituting headphones, the crashes got less frequent. But the blue-screens and desktopcrashes (no error message when this occur) are really annoying. Anyone experiencing the same issues?
(From what I’ve heard from friends: No crashes when playing on lower settings.) But then again, if I wanted lower settings I would have purchased the console version.
Hi guys, I’ll try to check your issues but I have limited time, so I hope others could stay for a while to help too. Thanks.
Thanks! The setting of my sound on windows to 44.1Khz cd quality fixed the crash as launch problem. I can always switch it back when I play my HD music.
Running Win7 64bit, AMD 6950 2Gb output to HDMI, I7 8700.
got the same problem remebered an old trick.
start the game don’t play goto task manager then property sheets processes set skyrim.exe affinity
from 4 to 2 that did it for me
Okay, strange, very annoying problem. I have the PC version of skyrim. It played perfectly for a long long while, but when i tried to used magic and clicked on the magic section in the menu, it creashes to the desktop. I’ve already tried the sound thing. As far as i know it only does this with me clicking the magic option….Would REALLY like this fixed.
but i guess for now..i wont be playing a mage…
[...] are additional resources available to you with a list of very specific crash fixes over at crashfixes.com. I wont go through all of those, so check that out if you still have issues launching the game. [...]
STUCK AT CHOPPING BLOCK SCENE, game still plays but cant move and the animations wont continue, is there anyway to fix this or just skip the whole scene together?
Thanks
I have the same problem, stuck at the chopping block with the dragon still flying around…
I get this as well. I can’t play for more than 15 minutes it seems without a crash exactly like the one you describe. I have to restart my pc.
win 7 64 bit and on win xp sp3 (i have both installed, on separate hard drives), hd 5870.
Same exact problem. I can make it happen on demand by looking to the far right when you are watching the guy get shot by the archer, before you create your character.
Monitor goes into power-save, sound loops, have to force a hard-reset.
HD 6870, 11.10, Windows 7 x64.
When I start skyrim, there is sound for the bethesda logo but then it cuts out and there is no sound for the loading screen and the game itself. Need help!
Hello Guys my issue is rather simple, My game runs beautifully I’m lucky not to have crashes or many of the problems you poor fellas are having, however my game freezes every so often, for about 2-4 seconds, then just returns to normal, it doesn’t ruin the game for me, but it sure as hell makes it less enjoyable, if anyone can help me out with these random freezes in game, please reply
bonechill passage bug – play that dungeon in windowed mode, weird but it works lol
I can confirm that running in windowed mode fixed all my crashing issues, too. I have Windows 7 64bit, Nvidia GTX-470, Realtek HD audio.
I kept crashing within about 30 seconds of loading a saved game while in the ice cave at the Ice Wolf.
Before that, I systematically tried every single proposed fixed step by step and none worked. And I seriously tried every fix I could find anywhere…
Hope that helps someone!
My game crashed (rebootes) during the intro (the wagon ride), i tried all the fixes but nothing helped.
Not a solution but a workaround:
I found out that by going down a screen resolution from 1920*1080 to 1360*768 my game runs. Hopes it will help some of you to play the game until the make a bug fix.
I’m getting the crash every time I try to enter the magic menu. The game was running perfectly until ten minutes ago when this problem started.
Hello all, first off thanks for the fix tips at top. Here’s what got Skyrim to launch for me:
. put the sound settings at 16bit, 44100 hz
. go to nVidia control panel global settings and make sure
anything that has anything to do with antialiasing & filtering,
turn off
. go to program settings tab (make sure it is highlighting “valve
steam (steam.exe)” and turn off all antialiasing & filtering.
I hope this helps and thanx again:)
Hi guys. I read almost 2 full of forums about problems with skyrim, but I think i add one more just in case here. What I am experiencing is that the game simply stops continuing after I make my character and walk to the execution ground with the lady guard. I assume a dragon should appear or something (I could hear a big roar), but then I cannot move, the story stops, I cannot use anything, the only possible thing I can do is use the menu (save, options etc.). I could read about freezes and crashes, but this is just awkward. Anyone has this problem? Or are the other freezes of the same nature?
The way I got around this was to quicksave and reload. Had to do this 3 times to get through that spot but it worked.
Hey, my problem sucks. I played the game for about 4 hours straight today with no problems. But now when I play the game, about every 20 minutes, my computer black screens, I get an audio loop, and my PC won’t respond. I have to hard boot the computer to be able to do anything again. I know my system can run this game, but I’m getting tired of this, it’s ruining the game, and I need a fix. Any help is appreciated.
Your not alone… people all over forums have this same issue with these hard crashes. Let’s hope for a quick fix.
Yeh, I was checking all around, and a lot of the Nexus forum is experiencing this, and all of the suggested fixes aren’t working.
DUDE i have _THE EXACT SAME ISSUE. Thought i was alone. I cant play Skyrim at all!!! We need a fix ASAP. Please let me know if you have a solution. I’d really thank you.
I was having lots of crashing problems. Strangest thing, I’d be going along just fine, no lagging, no freezing up just smooth sailing, then suddenly, and seemingly for no reason it’d just crash to desktop without so much as an error message. This would happen about every 15 to 20 minutes (sometimes even more frequently). The only thing that even came close to fixing it was switching to windowed mode. I did crash once in a couple of hours of playing like that, but overall it seemed to help.
Having the same problem, sometimes it just goes back to desktop after 5 mins and sometimes after 20 mins. didn’t happen to me after is installed it yesterday, played just fine no bugs or anything, but when i started to play today, it kept doing this.
will try your windowed solution, see if that will increase the time between the crashes for me aswell.
tip: press allot of f5!
My problem is as follows: Every time I try to enter the magic menu the game crashes. I get no message or anything, just a straight crash to desktop. This happens whether I press tab and click on magic, or simply press the ‘p’ hotkey. My drivers are up to date. I’m running on GeForce GTX 580. The game ran perfectly for about five hours total. I have found an interesting issue with this…
I loaded up a save from about five minutes prior to my most recent one. I went into the magic menu without issue on this save. I then played for a couple minutes, killing a few enemies and reaching level 5 once again, and then tried the magic menu and it crashed to desktop like before. I just found it interesting that it worked, but after killing a couple enemies and leveling up to 5 it crashes again. I’m going to bed now, hopefully some progress has been made by the time I’m ready to play again… otherwise I’ll just have to live without magic for a while.
Hello, experienced crashing during introcutscene, but managed to get to character creation using the V-sync fix. There the game crashed, but not like usually when a game crashes. Instead of freezing, crashreport and such things, the game just exits, as if I exited game from the menu, and then the Steam update news are appearing. Could it possibly be Steam who’s malfunctioning?
I have the same problem. +.+’
But don’t know what the hell is happening, I can’t even reach the village. lol
I am randomly experiencing crashes when I am looting something, typically a fallen enemy, and I use R for Loot All. This is really aggravating.
I was having the crashing due to the sound, but I set mine down to CD Quality (44KHz) as instructed and it works fine for that issue. Seems pretty ridiculous that a brand new game cant handle any sound quality over minimum.
I can’t load any of my saves I just get stuck on the load screen but It lets me start a brand new game fine I just can’t ever save since I can’t load.
i have the exact same thing i fast travveld pc shut down now i cant load any saves only new game
Random Crash when adventuring, i have tried all sound configs, adm run, compatibility mode
i want to play
My game crashes when im doing the quest to collect the remaining artifacts in saarthal, right when the wall breaks it just freezes indefinatly
I had this same problem, back up and shoot it from far away at an angle
same here…dunno how to fix
Ok so happened to me too tried the first reply advice and didn’t work…
but then i got it! shoot the door with the unrelenting force and the second you press Z turn the camera 180 so you don’t look at the door
Thank´s mate….for the tip !! You´re really a savior
Hey guys.
I bought Skyrim yesterday, and I have a problem. The installing goes fine, and the download after aswell, but when I get to the “installing for the first time 3/3″ I cant install DirectX for windows.
When I start the game I always get a “Installing DirectX for windows 1/1″, and when I get the to launcher and klick Play I get a black screen then back to desktop. The first few times I only got “Skyrim has stopped working” when I launched it.
I’ve tried to reinstall it, and I’ve tried to reinstall steam, but it didnt work. Does it have something to do with my soundcard? and how do I check if my soundcard is DirectX 9 compatible? This is btw what I’ve got:
Windows Vista
Processor: Intel Core 2 duo e8400 3.0Ghz
Memory: (enough), 2k ram
Video card: XFX GeForce GTX 260, 896MB
Thanks for answers!
@ PeterABN: It happens the same to me….may anyone help us?
SAme problem. i have literaly done everything this site says and online please reply if u found a fix….
HELP =( <sadface = bad
i am getting a crash after i press to start a new game and before i get to the character creation (i assume) and i probably did something obvious and silly of me to miss cuz i have seen any one else posted this problem
As soon as i open skyrim the dragon is a pink and a red triangle
Im starting to think its a steam issue too …. first forums are down and downloading games takes ages too .. as it drops connection every few minutes and stops downloading stuff …. steam has issues i think with this game
so we just wait out ? lol … im getting for ps3 today , middle finger to skyrim pc
For everybody who gets hang ups/ freezes in Skyrim and has a rig that wont suffer from this:
Try DOWNclock!!! your Gpu!!!
I was trying to getting skyrim to work when my gpu overheated due to a dirt moving fan^^,
so i downclocked my 8800gtx to its minimum ratings using the EVGA tool and Skyrim works like a charm now!even with high settings (AA,full filtering, etc…)
When I try to open the game via Steam, it pops up Error 80. HELP D:
What do I do?
it was working earlier now when i press continue game it just closes the game
I’m having the exact same problem and would love if anyone could suggest a fix for this.
Hi, like TnuocEht skyrim crashes after the bethesda logo, to a black screen with the skyrim logo. i can’t see my mouse, i can’t alt-tab, nothing.
just a black screen with the skyrim logo.
help please…
The game crashes while in the wagon, when the man says ” funny, when i was a boy i used to think the walls kept me safe” and it’s always on that exact spot :S plz someone help!
I can play through the tutorial with no issues. When I leave the tutorial-style cave and enter Skyrim proper I cannot leave that area. I can hang around there for ages but when I set off for Riverwood it freezes after 10-40 seconds and I have to force reboot. My PC meets the minimum requirements and almost the recommended requirements so I’m sure this is not a hardware issue. This really sucks because I all I can do is repeatedly fight the guy who is with me :/ If anyone could help I’ll be very grateful.
my game plays well for long periods (two hours or so) and then for no apparent reason will crash to desktop with no errors. I have been in the first dungeon after the dragon escape when this has happened, outside and the latest is at a bandit camp right outside of Whiterun doing a lockpick on a chest. I am running Vista, Intel Core2 Quad 2.40Ghz, 4Gb RAM.
Same thing. I was going to buy the game but couldn’t wait till payday (too anxious) so I downloaded a copy. Sure glad I did, if this shit isn’t fixed soon I am not going to pay for a game I cannot play, even if it is the godlike skyrim
My pirated version hasn’t crashed. It’s free and works perfectly on my old 8800 GTS.

I’m sorry if it has been mentioned, but I get random crashes in-game. It can be 30 minutes, 40, 10 it doesn’t really matter, the game just suddenly crashes to the desktop without warning.
I’ve tried forcing v-sync off and that didn’t work, same thing.
Also, some times when I want to fast travel the game crashes immediately when I press “Yes” to “Do you want to fast travel to this destination”.
I might try to downclock the GPU as someone said, but I doubt that’ll work since I haven’t overclocked it more than 30 MHz or so..
Any ideas?
Thanks!
So I haven’t seen anyone with the exact issue i’ve been running across, I’ve haven’t been able to get the game to start at all yet. I’m running Win7 Pro x64 w/ i7 2600k, a GTX570 and dual monitors. I’ve installed the game both from disc and as a download from steam, I never see the bethesda logo but at times if i mess with the resolution it will briefly show the main menu and then crash out with a Skyrim has stopped working message. I’ve gone through every standard measure i can think of. I have
-applied the oft mentioned sound fix to 16 bit 44.1(i’m using optical audio out if that makes a difference)
-tried old nvidia drivers, latest whql, and the current beta
-updated directx
-updated realtek audio drivers
-disabled vsync
-run in windowed mode
-tried all resolutions, lowered to minimum graphic detail
-disabled second monitor
-verified nvidia control panel modes are all set to application controlled
Anyone else having this level of trouble?
Thanks
hi im having problems with areas of terrain walls etc having graphics glithes large patches just appear an dissapear so annoyin can anyone help?? drivers are at latest and high spec rig
I preordered the game and got it mid night 11/11 and its 11:43 on 11/12 and when ever i click play on skyrim on on the file in my steam library it says “the game is unavailable. Please try again at another time
Same problem for me too.
I’ve benn looking around and the only fix seems to be installing by bypassing steam, not even sure if that works. I’m still trying to find some other fix. Please tell me if you find anything.
I’ve been getting the freezing up for a couple seconds as well, except sometimes (happened 3 times in the 11 hours i’ve played so far), it just complete freezes and i cant do anything. The audio still plays (like the healing spell sound), but no visual changes.
When i try to ctrl+alt+del my way out, task manager comes up, but i cant see it. Skryim is still just stuck on my screen. I can tell task manager is there because my cursor shows up where it should when task manager is up, and at the bottom where the start-bar is.
I’m running Windows XP, dual core 2.4GHZ AMD Athlon, 2gb ram, nVidia 440gt.
Skyrim runs fine for me, but At some times, some angles and one place all the time, Armor and objects are see through, like almost invisible. Not sure if im the only one whose had this prob or if its a known bug, but I cant seem to find it anywhere.
I had the magic menu crash issue and went back to see exactly what made it happen. What made it happen in my game was spam eating things to clear out my inventory after killing a dragon. I don’t know if this is what caused it for anyone else but for me I just went back through from before the point I had done that and dropped all the food instead.
I have finally managed to play for 30 minutes straight and past the initial building without it crashing. First I uninstalled steam and my ati drivers (uninstall normally then start in safe mode and use a driver cleaner to get rid of everything). Then reinstall the new drivers and steam.
I the declocked my card by about 10% (sounds crazy as it wasn’t overclocked to begin with). It actually runs smoother now its downclocked. I deleted all the old save (if like me you have had serious crash problems you probably haven’t made it more then half an hour in any way) to ensure no weird settings were being saved. Starte the game with the vsync turned off as stated above and any in game aa turned off.
I have yet to load my save and have not managed a long playthrough yet as 75% of my time has been trying to get it working. Anyone with ATI I would suggest reinstall and declock and see what happens.
If it works i’m happy. But really annoyed as it is clearly an error on bethesda part as I can play a few hours of crysis non-stop with my card clocked originally with no problems what so ever.
Try downclocking your grapiccard, and set the prioroty for the game to high, the game is much more stable and don’t freeze anymore. Atleast not for me.
My grapiccard is a ATI HD 4870 if its to any help
Hey there, i’ve got a little issue: If i move a lot around with my mouse, i hear the windows error message, but nothing happens, the mouse freeze for like 2 ms. Anyone know anything about this ? Thx
works great at times but randomly the frame rate drops to really low levels and remains the way for a while……….. any advice..
This is BS, 59 bucks + tax for a half baked release. Game shuts down as soon as I click start new game. Warp speed crash back to desktop. Tryed the mentioned fix’s and nothing.. My comp should be able to run at high settings.. Can I get a refund?
I have crashed a few times, first was reading a book at the end of Bleak flats cave. I have turned the Vertical sync off and adjusted mouse speed to =0. I now have a book titled thief and attempting to read it causes the crash. Any ideas?
So far the game works good until I reach the execution of the first prisoner, he walks over and the woman recites the last rights and after about the 2nd sentence the audio cuts and she turns her head and nothing happens, the game isnt frozen as i can open/close the menu and all NPCs still do idle movement. help?
I had almost exactly the same problem in that mission, just a little ahead, when hadvar encounters arlof he just stops there doing nothing.
I fixed it by installing a pirated copy of the game, non Razor version, and playing without the 1.1 update. After finishing the bugged mission, I took my saves to the legit 1.1 game and keept playing normal. I´m 10 hours into the game by now and working perfect.
Problem #4 The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Crash Fix – Game crashes when launching / upon launch
This is a typical DirectX problem. Just update to the latest DirectX version and voila.
This solution is not working.
I have the latest directx and nvidia drivers.
I want everyone to know my expirience with the crashes because it might help. i have a desktop and a laptop, laptop with windows 7 and desktop with windows xp. I was able to get the game to work after struggling through crash at the beginning where it doesnt even go in game. then one where you get near the first city. now i got it to work.. so i thought. i get within the boundries of whiterun and the game crashes to my desktop without a error. I’ve tried going into whiterun from different angles and it doesnt work… on my desktop. so i coppied the game files ontop my laptop which has windows 7. Now magically it works. i can do everything i want.. but my laptop is EXTREMELY slow. So if it’s any corralation i’d say xp is the problem here. You hear that Bethesda game studios? It’s all xp from what i know. even my cousin whom is right next to me playing it on his 20x better laptop with no glitchs… on windows 7 -_- someone find the differences in these operating systems that allow and dis-allow gameplay.PLEASE for the sake of Skyrim players evverywhere answer me soon.
thank you ahead of time.
well, steam updated the game and wow everything works flawless now.. excellent game, hope the update works for everyone, see ya.. already lvl 5
Let’s see if it updated…
Hey thank you so much
That first recommendation fixed it for me. Also I changed it to the 24-bit option of the 441000 and it works. so I don’t believe it has to be the 16 bit option of the 441000. THANKS!
Hello. I have experienced a few crash problems with Skyrim.
The first one, crash to desktop upon launch, I have fixed by setting the sound to 24bit, 441kHz.
However, a few minutes into the game (while in the wagon, before character creation), I experience a crash at random times (Sometimes it’s quicker, sometimes I almost get to creation).
I have no idea how to fix the problem, I’ve got a fresh W7 installation with latest drivers and direct x. I’m running an ATI Radeon HD5670.
Please give me feedback on my problem, I really wish to play Skyrim.
Hello people,
The patch fixxed a few things but im still getting random crashes, after rebooting my game and trying to do the same thing i still get the crash at the same time.
This is how i get past it, i load my game walk a lil then resave the game.
Somehow this wont get me crash that part anymore.
Even so i still get random crashes to desktop.
PS.
Please have faith in the developers theyr working hard on the problems im sure, the patch is proof of that.
I have the issue with the game going to desktop after trying to start a new game and the loading screen appears.
I have tried all the fixes I have found here and elsewhere, but nothing works. :\
Any ideas what could be wrong?
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600
Asus P5N-E Sli
3,5GB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 550 Ti
NVIDIA High Defination Audio
Three times have the game crashed when I’m at the character creation. The screen goes black, the sound is looping and I have to restart the computer manually.
Any solutions?

Tryed to install DirectX10 , Changed my sound to 44.1khz, updated the game changed to lower resolution but nothing happend, it still freezes when i’m outside the world. Can anyone help me, because this is one big and annoying problem :/
Nevermind my previous message, I actually got the game working by doing the Steam Verification. I didn’t really know before what this was (steam newbie), but I found it by accident and it solved the problem!

Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.) When I manually placed the .dll as instructed here (http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1277577); manual b/c the setup/installer for directX fails everytime b/c i have directx 11 and you can only download directx 9 from microsoft website but then I get the error of (Application Error: “The application failed to initialize properly (0xc000007b). Click OK to terminate.”) which apparently also glitched in the The Witcher 2. I tried reinstalling the c++ files and nothing… please help

Thanks for the fixes, the one with the sound fixed it for me. I will be bookmarking this page for sure,
im unable to enter the bone strewn area south of wind helm, as soo as i enter i ctd.
I have a problem..In the main menu when I click New,the titles disapears..then the game quits automatically. Please help me!How can I fix this problem?
I have a fix for the sound, but it will only help some people.
So, I had a couple of problems: auto-quit to desktop, stuttering sound and then computer crash, blue screen, etc. Did most of the steps above, including compatibility mode, but nothing fixed the crashes because of sound. I do have a sound card that I wasn’t using (Asus Xonar ST), and I reinstalled it, disabled the rest of my on-board sound, and the game runs fine now. I realize that not everyone will have a dedicated sound card laying around, but hopefully that will help some people maybe!

I can sometimes also see the characters faces and the strange thing is that I can see the menu perfectly and I can see the subtitles fine too I just cant see the ambient and the people. Is there any way of posting pics so you can better se my dilema? Please help.
After trying out a few of the tweaks mentioned here; disabling anti-aliasing, anistropic filtering etc, I’m still getting sudden CTD’s randomly occuring after a few minutes of play. No freezing, no black screen, no warning, just boom, straight to desktop. A CTD occured on two occassions just from opening a door/entering a new cell. System details below;
XP Pro 32bit
Phenom IIx4 3ghz processor.
Radeon HD5850 video card with latest drivers.
3GB ram
So i’ve now gotten the update for skyrim hoping for the game to not crash anymore to no avail. It still applies that when i come to a certain area in the game it crashes. Is this happening to anyone else??

random auto-kiks to desktop – game can run in Each graphic option from Low to Ultra,(I enabled a few nvidia settings like triple buffering and threaded optimization) but it still crashes.I have the latest directx and nvidia drivers still crashes randomly.
Unfortunately Only working solution was instaling :”The_Elder_Scrolls_V_Skyrim-Razor1911″ 8h gameplay no problems spotted.
How ridicules and sad is that??
It’s really sad that you have to posses a pirated version of the game on your computer regardless of reason. It took Bethesda five years to make this game, the least you can do is show respect by not downloading pirated versions.
Ok, I got the game yesterday. I start the game and get to the first loading screen. Then it crashes. Is there anything I can do?

This exact problem happens to me too. Nothing we can do about this as we are not alone. It’s not YOU so … it’s not your fault. Just wait for a patch. I know that is really annoying but since there is nothing you can do about it, there is no sense in fretting.
game starts i can play it for about 15 mins then my pc freezes, sound makes a buzzing sound and i have to restart my pc
any help would be greatly apreciated thx
So I entered my first quest. I have to retrieve a golden claw in some mountain. I encountered these dead skeleton and then my character keeps dying for no reason. You stand in a corner, you die, you run for a while then you die. Is this a glitch??
Hello,
Im having a weird graphical bug. The whole game goes on just fine. Until the part that we have to get off the cart were riding in. Problem is, i get off, but like fall through the cart, and as a resolve i cannot move. All i can do is move the mouse to look around or enter some off the menus that are available. I read something about this on bethesda site. Where they claim its a “toggle” walk/run problem. And that if i press caps lock, that it would work. But it simply doesnt. Any help will be greatly apreciated. And iff possible, can you send it to my mail? magizzzian@gmail.com. Tyvm in advance.
Hi,
my game crashes everytime the Dragon arrives at the begining.I tried everything, the sound thing, vertical sync,aa disabled but still having the same issue over and over again.I red all the comments but i found nothing. It’s so annoying to buy a game and then being not able to play it….
Hi,
for all those steamers that don’t seem to get this game to launch, try launching the game from \steam\steamapps\common\skyrim\tesv.exe
For some reason I can’t start the game through the launcher, but through that executable file it works for me.
Hi, I tried doing this and the game does actually get laucnhed. But the window is way too big, I can’t access the main menu, any solution?
I encountered some issue on my laptop. Skyrim crashes every time a mammoth is supposed to appear. At first I tought it was giants, but later found out that it was mammoths. This issue doesn’t occour on my desktop, which has worse specs than my laptop.
Laptop Specs.
Processor: Intel® Core™ i3-2330 CPU @ 2.20GHz
Installed memory (RAM): 8.00 GB
System type: 64-bit Operating System (Windows 7 Pro SP1)
GPU: nVidia GeForce GT 540M 2GB
I’ve tried:
– 44100Hz 16-bit sound setting
– Updating Video, Audio, DirectX, ect. drivers
– Vista SP2 Compadability mode
– Disabling anti-aliasing and filtering
– Adding Skyrim to Windows Firewall exceptions list
If anyone knows how to fix this, please let me know.
Cheers!
HI! I’m having weird fps drops everytime someone talks or I shout/cast spell etc. I have ATI 5850 mobility HD and 4gb RAM and I’m able to run this game on high settings. Just wondering what might cause this and if you guys have the same problem
I have another one for you.
My game was crashing on me every 20 minutes or so without warning while in-game. I have a very good graphics card (nVidia) and a more than capable computer, so I had the graphics set to ultra.
I went in and turned Reflective Objects off (un-checked it) and the crashing seems to have stopped.
I’ve tried running both the latest nVidia drivers and the BETA drivers and neither solved the problem. Turning Reflective Objects seems to have done the trick.
This fixed my problem.
For everyone having the desktop crash, don’t do the main quest, just do other stuff first, because the crashing started for after i killed the first dragon, made a couple of more chars to check it and be sure, and no crashes with the ones that didn’t kill the dragon. (it’s possible that i’m terribly wrong, but it seems to work atleast)
hope it works for you guys aswell
What worked for me was to delete config files in the my documents\my games\skrim folder, re-enter the launcher and let it generate the config files again.
Hello, my Skyrim works very well, but he has an annoying problem: Whenever I walk through the map of the world outside of towns or dungeons, for example, there is every little bit I’ve been giving an extremely annoying lag.
For example, I take 40 steps and gives a lag, and is so ever. The game works fine without further problems, which I find strange, because in cities and dungeons that lag does not happen. What could be, can anyone help me?
i have problem with skyrim… when i start game i´ll see bethseda logo then i see skyrim logo ( dragon ) but in this moment the gamme stopped work…solution with sound 24 bit / 44100 Hz is complicated for me beacause i have Win XP, so I pleas very much have anyone some idea to delete this problem???
Same problem with Bonechill. Played hours up hours until I got to this cave. Then,POP! games just – goes away. Instantly. Quite annoying.
Well, steam updated my client. And im now past the char selection screen, and so far so good.
I’m repeatedly crashing on one of the Dark Brotherhood quest chain.
**SPOILERS FOR THE DARK BROTHERHOOD QUEST LINE BELOW**
I’m on the quest “Death Incarnate.” Every time I enter the sanctuary, go down the stairs into the first room and then turn left, I crash. I haven’t had that problem up until now. The sanctuary is smoky, fiery and shaking. I thought it might be the graphics, so I turned them down to low. No dice. Looked at the floor. No dice. I’d really like to finish this quest line!
Anybody got any ideas?
I’m having this same problem, also in the night mothers chamber.
I’m having the exact same problem
I am having this problem as well. It happens after I save Nazir, and the Night Mother tells me to embrace her. As soon as she is done speaking, the game crashes.
have exactly the same problem pls someone help
I’ve found two ways around this:
1)Turn off your console, start the game from your last save point and wait for 24 hrs before entering the Night Mother’s coffin.
2) Wait for it to load. (this take several minutes)
Skyrim crashes every time i travel to Whiterun, or even get near that town. That is freakin weird!
I have tried every single “solve skyrim crash guide” I can find.
I can play perfectly everywere else, but as soon i get close to Whiterun the game crashes and throws me back to desktop.
Anyone with similar issue?
i have the exact same issue. i can go everywhere other than whiterun… which is where my main quest is…
I have a problem where the game randomly shuts down my pc im running an acer aspire 5551 with ati radeon mobility 4250 hd and 4 gb ram dual core processor and windows 7 x64.
I have tried every fix i can find on the web nothing works i know its the game and not my hardware cuz i can run any other game including mw3 and bf3 and it doesnt over heat or crash or anything
if anyone can think of anything i would appreciate it.
(GTX 560 ti, Phenom II X4, Win7 x64)
I get: CTDs, Blue Screen, complete Freeze, and Hard Crash/Reset. The hard crashes are usually preceded by long line artifacts flashing in sporadic locations.
One fix seems to have helped the most:
”
Go to Nvidia control panel by right clicking the icon in the taskbar, then manage 3d settings and set threaded optimization to on.
”
The above allowed me to get out of a rainy fight with some wolves that kept crashing.
Also:
Running on High Settings causes noticeably more crashes, but using Low with no AA seems to get around 30min-2hr without a crash.
Note: I overclocked my CPU and RAM, so this may be causing it. Plenty of users aren’t having any trouble at all.
I HAVE BLUESCREEN CRASHES 2!!!
I had blackscreen crashes with the downloaded version and after getting a few the game crashed to desktop.
I was tired of it so i decided to buy the game today but now i even get bluescreens with the bought version !!
After 2 minutes ingame i get a bluescreen and my pc just reboots.. Now even my downloaded version gives bluescreen.. I’m at the tower where you have to slay the first dragon..
My system has a quad core 2.83 gb , vista, 4gb ram, ati radeon hd 4870 1gb overclocked. I have udated my drivers.. It’s not my pc cause i never had/have problems with other games…
I’ve been googling a lot and nothing works!! What a ripoff!! They sell a game that doesn’t work!Hopefully Bethesda will fix the game soon!! The strange thing is that there are a lot of different problems depending per person.. When will this be fixed??
The devellopers don’t even give online info.. This shit is driving me crazy i’m thinking about trying to get my money back..
I encountered a very strange glitch where my character keeps on dying for no reason in the Black Beak Dungeon. The glitch disappeared by loading a previous save outside the dungeon.
Hope this helps.
Is it just me or this game feels more like Fallout New Vegas than Oblivion?
Man. EVERYTHING THAT COULD HAPPEN TO THE GAME, HAPPENED. EVERYTHING. The game is purple, it crashes when i select new game in that loading screen with the Dragonborne quote, the sound is really weak, it’s windowed, i updated my drivers, directX, most of the general fix, i man, i don’t know what to do anymore. I mean, WHAT THE FUCK, BETHESDA? YOU LANCH A GAME BEING EXPECTED FOR 2~3 YEARS BY YOUR FANS, AND YOU JUST THROW THIS BUGGY S-H-I-T ON US? JESUS CHRIST, LOOK AT THIS, I LOVE TES WITH MY LIFE, AND GATHER MONEY FOR A YEAR TO.. THIS? BULL-SHIT!
I agree
Sorry for the wall-rage people. If someone can help me, please try to.
hey guys..i have a damn problem here…the game i menu is loading well i with fine sounds..but when i start the game , the textures arent clear ..i dunno how to explain..i cant see quiet well in the game due the multiple texture that are rendered in front of me..like texture green plus yellow plus i dunno, all of them are afront of me and its messeed up
Actually, Matheus Lazzarotto, I feel your pain. GTA IV and New Vegas were bitter disappointments to me because of stability problems when they first came out. Actually, I couldn’t get GTA to launch at all and I still have problems with New Vegas – just not as much. I’m having the Bonechill crash problem, but other than that the game has played well. Will try tonight to see if any of these fixes get me past Bonechill. Good luck!
Actually Dragineez, i feel like a tard. I forgot to download the patch, but steam is doing it for me right npw, hopefully it will fix. Good luck to you man!
matheus what did u do exactly? so steam replied to u ? i am still facing the problem and i dunno what to do
So is there no fix for voices on skyrim for windows XP?
CRASHING RIGHT AFTER PRESSING THE PLAY BUTTON? I FOUND A SOLUTION!
RIGHT CLICK TESV.EXE AND CLICK PROPERTIES, CLICK COMPATIBILITY MODE AND CHECK THE FOLLOWING CHECKBOX…
Disable Desktop Composition
So, make sure above option is disabled by checking the checkbox.
Leave everything else as is, then click ok! Now try! I tried everything else, did not work, tried this via trial and error and it worked!
I HAVE BLUESCREEN CRASHES!!! Are there others with the same prob??

no xp voice fix yet?
The game is playing fine for me but i have found that when i try go to do this one quest in Greywater Grotto southwest of Helgen it crashes but i asked my mate to go there also but he didnt get the crash and i have tryed every fix i can find and i still get the crash :S
So, I tried launching skyrim in windowed mode, but the screen is way too big now. I can’t access the menu. Does anyone know how to fix that?
Now i got quite a problem.
But I’d like to start with saying I really appreciate it making this guide to help people out. Thanks.
Now I still got a horrible graphic problem, I see black spots, a lot of blackspots on my screen especially on bright places, but im not too sure about that. Also it freezes every 20 seconds, and then I have to wait 4 seconds, and then it works fine. But the freezing just keeps on going.
Now to avoid you will have to ask me random questions, here are some details:
-Windows XP
-RAM: 2GB (recommended is 4.. could it be?)
-HDD: 9GB (free disk space)
-Graphics: NVIDIA Quadro FX 570
-Sound: DirectX 9
-DirectX: version 9
-Internet ofcourse.
Things ive tried:
-Changing Resolution (no diffrence)
-Change to Windowed mode (No diffrence)
-Change Antialias (No diffrence, blue screen on 16 samples)
-…changing any of the Skyrim settings didnt help basically
—Now you can understand my eyes stopped at #10, which should fix my problem now I tried changed the priority to High, or Higher, but both wont make a diffrence.
And the 1st fix, well I aint no beginner, but I really don’t understand that one;
_____ 1st Fix of #10__________________________________________
Disable vsync and antialiasing on fifaconfig.exe after enable/force antialiasing on AMD Vision Engine Control Center (AMD/ATI) or Nvidia Control Panel (nVidia),finally enable/force tripple buffering and vsync on D3DOverrider(Download Here)
______________________________________________________________
Because I cant find the Control Panel of nVidia (I can find a map of NVIDIA)and I dont know what where fifaconfig.exe should be, and what D3DOverrider is, I have to download that?
Could someone explain it to me? Or tell me what other fix I can try?
Im having problem with dual wielding.
It crashes right after i clicked unsheate button. But when i unsheate other weapon such as bow it didnt crashes. Any solution ? thanks
Whenever I try to read a book in game the game does not show the book, tells me I have to options of turning the page and taking it, but completely freezes up. Any suggestions?
I had this same problem and can’t find any info on it. I suspect a mod conflict. Did you ever solve it? Please email me if so.
Can verify that running in windowed mode will get you through Bonechill.
There is a new xp fix out for freezing, crashing, and graphical glitches. Click download then enb 90. So far it’s working perfectly and I tried everything else and those options did absolutely nothing. It’s by Boris.
http://www.skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=91
Great tip whytepathe, thanks!
Hmm, big correction. Seems the fix I mentioned is for all windows operating systems. All the better.
I don’t know if anyone has mentioned it but my Skyrim crashes everytime I open a map. The game runs smoothly, everything looks normal, no sound or texture issues but whenever I open the map (no matter if with M or after Tab and map) the game crashes into desktop.
I found a fix, you need to download proper sound.bsa (which is 900mb size)
It worked for me
How do I change the sound format on XP (fix #1)? Or is that an issue for only Windows 7?
i been trying to figure it out too man no one here is answering even tho its a simple yes or no question
There’s no sound format option in XP. All you can do is turn down Sound Acceleration. Try whytepath’s solution (a few comments up).
Hello guys !
When I play the game and try to fast travel or enter/exit a building the game crashes randomly to the deskshop. I thought about the issue of overheating since I play TES5 on a laptop so I bought a cooling-tray yet the crashes still occur.
Another problem is that sometimes after about half an hour of gameplay I have srious texture glitches: Armor turning into purple, NPS’s heads disapper etc.
My laptop meets the system requirements of Skyrim, I have the freshest driver available so I am lost.
Could you guys help ?
NO SOUND/ ANOTHER FIX
I’ll keep things short, i spent 3 ****ing days, over 20 hours (Yeah i feel the need to tell you C**ts) of my life figuring this out
i tried and appreciated this post and many other like it, but it didn’t help me and others i read about.

it’s just Directx june 2010, but it’s helped other in my position (EXCLUDING ME)
i really hope it helps other though…
much love… back the endless forums
I had constant crashes and visual bugs as well, but I saw a post unrelated to crashes and bugs, and it had something about enabling Skyrim to run off of more than 2GB of RAM. I have 8GB DDR3 1600, so I decided I would try it out, see if it would reduce any framerate drops I may (not often) run across. It solved my crashes. 2 days now I have played for a couple of hours, and I have only crashed once, which was a steam error. The game runs fine now with more than 2GB allocated memory. It seems there might just be some akward memory usage in the game, and memory capping often results in errors, such as unexplained memory dumps (crashes). There is a program needed, I forgot it, I think it was that AA thing people talk about. Enjoy your games everyone!
Stucks after clicking on start a new game with dragon and smokes & soundtrack plays behind it,No problem with audio device,Tried all 16bit and other options,So just don’t know what the problem is!
help the game just barely starts im riding in the wagon when it goes into town the wagons stop at a wall then it just stis there it doesnt lock up i can look around but it does nothing else except tell me my hands are bound i waited 20 mins nothing any tips on this would be very much appreciated
Asus P7P55D-E, Overclocked i5 760, 4MB DDR3, Radeon HD5870.
Was getting random CTD or freeze requiring hard reboot, perhaps every 1/2 hour on average. Downloaded the latest soundcard drivers from my mobo supplier (Asus, VIA chipset). Since then, no crashes.
Don’t try to update/search for drivers from the device manager, (it told me that I had the latest driver, and I did not by a long way), you have to go to your mobo suppliers download page and get the right one for your mobo.
After having played Skyrim for 30ish hours, it suddenly crashed on startup, after changing the sound settings, without any success, i figured i’d check first if i changed anything since.
And turns out i had xfire turned on this time, which prevents the game from starting up, and crashes the game when you turn it on after the game is started.
Xfire can crash the game in short.
I had these crashes come and go every damn time i tried to play, after an hour things when purple(ish) and a while after just crashed.
Solved it though. Exited Steam, went to the install directory (steamapps and so on) ran the game through TESV.exe
Everything is smooth, no problems at all. That was my fix for it, hope this helps someone!
The patch I mentioned above also allows up to 4 gigs of memory to be used as well. There is a new updated one out, enb 91 and I expect he’ll continue to improve it as time goes by. For many, this patch will solve freezing, crashes, and graphical glitches when nothing else will. It’s for all windows operating systems. If nothing you have done so far works then try it.

Hi, I’m having issues with my Skyrim game. It stucks after I click “New game” and all I get is a black screen plus some smoke. I’ve tried using task manager to unbug it, but I don’t think it works. PLEASE HELP! This is VERY frustrating! :/
(larsdevil@live.nl in case you need my mail)
You should try to reconfigure the sound settings to fix Skyrim crash. Change the appropriate sound quality from the Control Panel to fix the problem. This will also fix Skyrim Lags.
Click Start | Control Panel.
Click Hardware and Sound| Sound.
Under Playback tab, select your speaker, and click Properties button.
Click Advanced tab.
Select this option: 24 bit, 48000 Hz (Studio Quality), and then click OK | OK.
Anyone that has the magic menu ctd problem, just take a rest of some hours (i took 5) and your problem will be gone.
It seems that the magic menu can crash if it has too many buffs (from eating a lot of food and taking many potions at the same time), just like the crates at the testing hall which may crash to desktop or freeze the game if you open them, because they have every single item in the game.
Hi, I got a crash problem. Every time I fast travel the game crashes to desktop without an error message, and sometimes it happens when I’m not even fast traveling. It said I should be able to play on high graphics. It’s not the sound, I checked that.
My shadow quality is also set to low. I really wanna know why. I don’t know if this problem is related, but sometimes the textures are messed up and armors look purple-ish. That’s not very bothering, but if that would help you know how to fix my problem, it would be great. Please help me!
i got some massive sound problems, i’ve already done the sound fix thing (16bits/44.1kHz) still i only get the bethesda intro sound, and when i start the game i hear nothing at all. any solutions?
Hai all, I got audio Problems, It plays just fine but there is only voices and Music, No effects or anything really, just Voices and Music, They run fine. How do I fix this?
Anyone who is having trouble getting around a point in the game because it’s crashing, I managed to find a temporary fix around the crashing but it was so simple I don’t know if it will work for everyone. I simply set the game to absolute minimum graphic requirements, windowed small resolution, and it worked. I beat the part that wasn’t letting me by (a crash with a normal dragon battle) and set the graphics back to ultra with no problems on the next save I made. Good luck!
Hi,
i have two differents problems. On my Pc game work perfect, BUt after hour of playing just shut down my pc(i dont know, but its maybe in performance). So i tried game run on my ntb. Works perfectly BUT sound doesnt work ?? just only in menu, but after i start the game, it looks like i have mute this game, but everithing is on max (win, game)

is a dualcore required if you have the ghz thats needed? i have 2.3 ghz and 4gb ram, theres no sound in the game, only the start with bathesda logo. i can see the mans mouth moving in the intro but no sound comes out, and suddenly he’s mouth stops moving and then nothing happends, until the part where i am supposed to get off the wagon, we just keep sitting there, the guys stil breath and look arround, but nothing happends then.
Skyrim crashes whenever I press tab and on my macbook it works fine but it crashes on my desktop
Just to let anyone looking know, I was experiencing a desktop crash in the same spot every time just north of riverwood shortly after crossing the bridge, it would crash 100% of the time, saving before, waiting till dark, fast traveling away then coming back, I tried every suggestion above, min settings to max settings, all to no avail, but it was finally fixed after installing the latest nvidia beta drivers.

To all those running on PC experiencing crashes:
If you have already tried setting the sound and vsync, and have updated drivers for your sound card, here are 2 things that you can check.
1. Make sure you gpu is cool enough! Skyrim uses a ton of gpu power, even at medium settings. Make sure you have good airflow, and that your card is running smooth. Try lowering the resolution or changing quality settings.
Symptoms of an overheated card are this: Random crashes, random ‘glitches’ , where the frame rate drops to like 2 or 3 fps, freezing, and locking up during graphically expensive times (lots of shadows, water reflecting a lot, tons of hair, etc.
2. Make sure you have a decent power supply. If you have a decent graphics card, you need a power supply that can run it. 350 watts is not nearly enough. You need to have a power supply of a MINIMUM of 600 watts, with a direct connection to the gpu (no splitting and ‘sharing’ connections with other devices.) Many times applications that crash for no apparent reason are due only to crap power supplies.
I hope this helps some.

I have a weird problem. Whenever I click play to start the game the menu just resets!!! DX HELP!!! plz?
Hey guys…. i really need some help.. everytime i try to start up skyrim it says this (Application load error P:0000065434) and whenever i try to play it using steam is says this (unknown App failed to start (error code 53)… I DONT KNOW WHAT TO DO please help me
[...] at the summit, the game crashed again. I've already done the suggested fixes on this site: Fixing Skyrim Crashes, Freezes, Errors, Steam crash, No Sound, Lags, Choppy framerates Turn off [...]
My game crashes in the beginning of the game (with the first cinematic), when they are almost in the village… they are talking and DUMDUMDUM… It simply crashes and closes. lol
First I thought: Must be drivers from the “Display adapter”, they need an update.
That wasn’t the problem.
Next thing I checked was if DirectX was installed… It wasn’t, I was like: OMG! This is so stupid!
I installed it and it still makes the same crap. Any idea? Please help me. Should I reinstall the game?
I just want test it because I’m thinking of buying it for my PS3 system (I want to play in HD, my PC aint good for that :3)
Cheers~

Hi everyone, I’m encountering a problem in my first cave (Bonechill passage) the game just randomly crashes (after 1-3 min) after entering the cave.. Is there any possible solution for this distrurbing bug ?
Exactly the same thing happens to me ….. exactly the same thing. Please guys, help ….. now grateful for the help …
My Skyrim crashes when it gets to 1,4Gb or RAM used (without Large Address Aware activated), or at 3,4GB or RAM used when Large Address aware is active.
Sometimes it doesn’t go that high and is stable, but some areas the RAM usage skyrockets to the deathmark within seconds of entering.
I tried out making it impossible for Skyrim to use that much ram by using other programs to use up enough RAM. Skyrim just went to the maximum RAM available, stayed there (putting my computer at 99% RAM used) slowing it down immensely (unplayable), but didn’t crash.
I played over 47 hours on my main character and ended up passing the Bonechill Passage to kill the dragon above. After killing the dragon I went into Bonechill Passage from the rear entrance to beat the animal quest for the Companions. I experienced close to desktop almost immediately upon entering the cave and since then no matter what I have tried any save I load will crash after about 1 minute. I have tried creating a new character and it crashes right after the first guy is beheaded. My computer is not that powerful and I have an 8800 GTS (512mb) video card but it worked just fine in Medium settings for 47 hours of play time.
Is it possible my video card is cooked? My desktop still works fine with windows 7 etc. Its frustrating that it was playing great for so long then nothing but CTD after the passage.
Thanks for your help!
Hey guys, i have a very serious problem.
I dont really know my pc specs, but the game itself runs fine on my windows 7 pc.
Only, after a while, without any real reason, the game crashes MY COMPUTER. It just shuts off and when i try to restart, it has to repair the startup procedure, wich takes quite alot of time.
This makes the game virtually unplayable, because i will be playing 1/3 of the time, and spend the other 2/3 repairing my windows system files. This ONLY happens when i play skyrim.
Fixes?
Hmm, a new patch is out.
Could always try right?
Where is the patch? Could you post the link here. Would be much helpful. Got the Graybeards problem. When I am close to entering the fort, the game simply crashes itself and goes to desktop. W/o any errors and things. Each damn time I try that – same shit happens. Playing on a PC and there have not been problems/crashes so far.
It autodownloaded for me.
Said: ‘steam has finished downloading skyrim blah blah’
MiniVanMan73
the same shit happend to me but mi using XP and i have the required
shit for tah game…!!
MLGASSKICKARPROEXEX,
At least I know its probably not a hardware problem yet. I was about to look into a new video card. My friend played on his new pc all weekend at my place and his definitely looked better than mine but the 512mb card looked pretty good for now.
(For PC version)
Whenever I visited the mage’s college in Winterhold, opening the doors into the different areas would freeze the game. I had to visit the archmage for the quest I was on, and I had just about given up, when I came across a page about console commands (accessed through the ~ key). Instead of loading an area by opening a door, you can jump right to the quest target by using these two commands:
showquesttargets (this shows the codes for all the quests yer on)
movetoqt XXXX (the XXXX is the code for whatever quest you want to jump to)
Hope this helps someone!
I purchased Skyrim through Steam; it installed successfully, and I played it for about 90 minutes last night.
I’ve come to load it today and it opens the Skyrim launcher, but when I press play, Windows 7 asks if it is ok for the launcher to make changes, I hit yes and it just reloads the launcher. I’ve tried the suggestions in the article and have reinstalled directX but no joy.
I knew I never should have cheated on Football Manager!
have the same problem, but in win xp (didnt ask me anything though). game worked well for 2 days, now when i hit play it loads for approx half sec, then im back to the launcher. when i had a look into the actual game files (\Steam\SteamApps\common\skyrim\) while doing all the bugfixing tricks mentioned here, i found out that the executable (TESV.exe) was not there anymore. so i suspect a problem with updating. i dowmload it again from steam now and hope its working then. and im sure to do a copy of it then…
perhaps you can check if you have the same issue with the missing file.
hope that helps anyone…
add: that solved the problem. so it was just a fucked up update, not a problem of my system. i will keep a copy of the TESV.exe from now on.
Is there a patch out yet that allows Skyrim to be installed off the retail DVD without any fucking steam at all? I’m looking forward to playing and modding Skyrim (I’ve got about 500 hours into Oblivion and bought several copies of it) but it ain’t gonna happen until steam is out of the equation.
From game menu i hit play and it locks up then lets me close. i ahve updated the drivers, direct x, and tried the sound fix. This is the error details i get for this:

Good news all, I finally found a fix that worked! First off I played 47 hours before having any problems. Then I did the winter cave where its bugged and after that all my stuff crashed. Every save crashed after that and even starting a new character would CTD after 1 minute. SOOO I went to “my documents/my games/skyrim” and copied everything to a backup file so i would have my saves. I then did a clean wipe and uninstalled everything from Steam and deleted the skyrim folder found in “my documents/my games”
I reinstalled everything and made a new character and the game was running super smooth again. I then manually copied just two save files over to the folder which I new were before I entered the cave that caused all the crashes. I have played 30 minutes since with no problems and the game is running super smoothly, looks good and all bugs are clearly wiped.
For what its worth, I built my computer in 07 and it has a Nvida Geforce 8800gts (512mb) video card on a CoreDuo 2.67ghz processor and the game runs fine for me in medium. I hope this helps someone, it ended a day and a half spent trying all kinds of mods and setting adjustments!
Goodluck!
Wow, MiniVanMan, that’s pretty hardcore.
Thanks for this tip, will surely help out others (probably with the same system as yours).
Bonechill solution: play the pass on windowed mode. Worked for me, after leaving the cave, restart the game with full screen and should be fine.
Thanks Guilherme! Really helpful, a lot are having this problem.
How do i get to windowed mode?
my skyrim crashes in the menu it will show the dragon but not the menu
the game played a couple of time before but now it will not come and it just crashes in the menu.
my win is xp and i update the graphic and dirtx drivers what should i do and i forced vsync to close and it didn’t help too if you can help i would apreciate it.
I have just finished installing SKYRIM. I cannot start playing the game because when click “PLAY” in the start screen, this error shows up:
program cannot start because X3DAudio1_7.dll is missing from your computer.
can anyone help me. please.
Hi John. That can be solved by downloading and installing the latest DirectX version. The official download links are in our Technical References page. Good luck!
Hi there, the game was working fine (one crash in about 20 hours)but now after level 11 if i want to level up it crashes as soon as i select level up from the player menu. any suggestions?
Hi there, any help would be appreciated. My game seems to play fine on medium settings. I’ve got sound and it hasn’t crashed on me. When I am outside the graphics start slowly going crazy. Things just start jutting out and creating a plane of textures. It gets to the point where I can’t really see anything ahead of my character. Has anyone had a similar problem? I don’t really know how to describe it well.
This guy has the same problem as me but with a different card. http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?p=26462047
Hey i am having an audio glitch. I was playing in some snowy mountains when my game froze, well i had to shut it down cause it wouldent respond. well when i ran the game again, the snowy high wind sound is glitched in so no matter where i am at, inside or outside, snowy high wind sound is glitched. please help.
After reading the entire list above, I have come to the following conclusions:
1. ATI cards and XP are big offenders (sadly, come on Bethesda!)
2. Xfire = bad, turn it off
2a. Nvidia SLI, try turning it off too. PhysX will run with the other card, it’s ok. Also runs cooler that way over all.
3. Sound = bad (similar to oblivion in the early days)
a. In XP turn off graphic accelerators, (slide the bar to the left to none.)
b. In Vista/7 Sound to 24 bit, 44100Hz (Studio Quality)
4. Bonechill Passage = Run in windowed mode.
5. Working fine for 47 hours, now it can’t play for 1 minute? Or won’t even get past the launcher?
a. Go to Skyrim on your steam library, right click it and click properties. Choose the local files tab, then click verify integrity of game cache.
b. After 11/21/11 go to c:\Program Files\Steam or c:\Program Files(x86)\Steam and delete clientregistry.blob. Load steam, this should force an update when you launch steam again. All your graphic settings will be reset, you’ll have to tweak them again.
c. All else fails, uninstall skyrim and steam. when you do, install steam in a folder other than c:/Program Files(x86) this directory is known buggy for some games, and won’t let you mod other games (like FO3). Weird protections exist which supposedly protects you from your software, but with games? Too much apparently.
6. If your computer restarts when playing skyrim for some length of time, it is possible that your video card is overheating or failing.
a. Don’t overclock, sorry, it’s just not good for the card’s heat if you are having issues.
b. Clean that dust! After a year the fins can get totally clogged. You may need to consult the internet with your particular machine to get it apart to clean the heat sinks.
c. Check your temperatures, there are many programs out there, if you are not exceeding 70C, then you are not overheating and most likely your card (especially Nvidia) is getting old enough to fail, when it fails it randomly reboots in taxing games even when it’s not overheating. If you are consistently over 85C, that’s hot. My GTX 285M (dual) only gets to 60C/40C with high settings, sli off (it barely uses the other card, but sli is buggy for me.
Hi! my problem with skyrim, is that somethimes when I start it… everything is ok. most of problems i already solved with your guide (i’m very thankfull btw) but one of them is repeat almost every time I start the game. screen is black in some of its parts, smth creats random black fields, somethimes it did help when I shut down game, change random solutions and start it again, bud when I try to fix it this way I feel like blind man looking for needle in haystack because if I find one solution ofit, it dont work again, please help me!
When i load my game after installation, the game always gets stucked at the screen with the dragon logo. The smoke just keeps appearing and dissapearing but the screen never ever progresses. I have tried reinstalling but the same thing keeps happening. My specs for my computer are better then the recommended ones. Help please. I installed from a disc.
Skyrim was working fine without any crashing until today. Everywhere I fast travelled crashed. Even in Winterhold when i was trying to enter the inn, the game crashes. When I try to save or quicksave in Winterhold, the game crashes. Is there any reason why this might happen?

Hello !
I have a strange effect in Skyrim (and similar issues in other games)
(Skyrim pc / on w7 / Ati Mobility Radeon HD 5650 1GB / 6gb DDR3)
All drivers are always up to date, thanks Driver max)
When i pass near a character, and when the game engine ‘launch’ a dialog or sentence for this character… game ‘freezes’ for about 1 or 2 seconds ! Nearly everytime Skyrim has to ‘search’ in his folder for a file, i guess..?
I have the same ‘kind’ of issues for some games : when i put my mouse (in lotro for example) on an stuff icone (to let a window appear with the information about the icone i’m pointing at) …it freezes for 1 or 2 seconds… again, like if the program had to access his files and asked me to wait !
Strange, cause most of the time those games run smooth on my computer with most of the graphics on ‘high’ (i’m just tweaking with the shadows low, just to be sure it doesnt eat to much..)
Any help or suggestion is welcome!
Thank you !
Hi, i have a problem i instaled the game and when i tried to start it i get application configuration error, i have windows xp and my computer meets the minimum req. does anyone have a solution, please answer
Can someone please help me!!, when i try to play it skyrim glitches in the beggining and i can never get out of the carrige!! help! email meeee how to fix
I’ve looked through the guide and tried so many things I’ve no idea what’s left. I installed it and it works absolutely fine on my brother’s computer but on my computer it decides that after I click on new game, the loading screen with the large dragon and story/tips in the bottom right decides to crash the game right there. I can’t get passed that spot, sometimes I get a few seconds further, sometimes it crashes a second or two earlier depending on the changes I make. I tried changing the sound to 16 bit 44.1khz and that did nothing. I’ve tried almost every available frequency of sound and it doesn’t give me any more than 10 seconds extra. I’m not sure what else to do…
My problem was that Skyrim crashed to desktop right after the loading screen. I tried every single suggestion above, deleted and reinstalled my graphics drivers and DirectX. When nothing worked, I had a look into my DirectX settings where, in the D3D section, I found the version was to “Use Debug Version of Direct3D”. I changed it to use the retail version just to try what would happen. And voila: My game no longer crashes and I can finally play now
Maybe this helps, if someone else’s DirectX settings are like mine.
were you in dxdiag? Where did you find the setting?
In the control panel (I’m using WinXP) I have an entry called “DirectX”. In the opening window there’s a card “Direct3D” where I found the settings mentioned above.
is this also on windows 7 control panel because i cant find these settings ….. is it like a program or what?
I’ve been trying everything and nothing has been working. I’ve realised that it is at a certain point in the game that my Skyrim crashes. I’m playing it on steam. It keeps crashing as a leave Markath after killing the chef (Dark BrotherHood Quest). I’ve tried loading save files before this and it does not crash. I’ve honestly tried the whole lot and nothing seems to be working. Anyone have any ideas ?
Hey I just installed Skyrim to my HP Pavilion dvo. When I started the game, the screen just went to crap and there were gray lines and pixels(?) everywhere. It looked like crappy 3D sheets. I went back to the launcher, and changed the graphic settings from medium to ultra. I tried again and everything was fine….for about 2 mins. The 3D glitches and crap all came back (but this time I could actually see.)They only appear in the distance, tight places or towns. Please help me with this I’ve really been looking forward to this game.
I found a fix that worked for me. I believe it had to do with the V-sync. Although the guide says to script it in, my Intel graphics card also has a feature to disable Vsync. I had to script it into the .ini file as well as tell my graphics card to disable Vsync.
I’m having a problem when trying to start a new game, everytime I try to start a new game, just before the game initially starts it just closes, and i’m left with a useless $60 disc. WTF
i have done all these steps and where i have traouble is when i say play game on steam…. the menu opens that has like 4 options play, tech support, options and exit… i press play, the instant i do this the screen exits and nuthing happens like tyhe game isnt even trying to open… if i wanted to i could just sit there going through pressing play… play then start over.. i hvae renisntaled game 2 times (both taking hours) please help
im on windows 7
hey
problem one… how to solve it on windows xp?
LISTEN UP!!
ABOUT CRUSH IN BONECHILL PASSAGE- The problem is same for every1… So here is solution. Press “`” and open console, type in TCL and press OK
TCL is collision mode- it means u dont collide with any textures… so just fly in through wall, kill the beast with bow or weapon and just fly away… to entrance.
After that u open console again and type “TCL Off”
I know its cheat using… but if it`s ur 1st mission at companions u are screwed up. I also heard that “Window mode” helps.
Hey, when i open up my launcher the game claims that it needs to make changes to my computer and asks for an administrator password (im not an admin on my comp so it has to ask). However, upon entering the password, nothing happens! The game does not change and when i try to click “Play” again it simply asks for administrator permission to change files. WTF! Can anyone help with this problem?

Hey guys,
Just to reassure you all, i have an amazing brand new alienware desktop that makes the game look awesome but i still get all sorts of random crazy crashes and bugs, from crashing to desktop after entering a new area, to textures turning completely pink, to having large gaps in the floor. Not to mention just spent hours completeing the imperial questline then took windhelm and bought the house only to find a bug meaning you cant clean up the murderers mess if you dont buy that first, but only found out after spending 20k gold on it and then saving it!!! Gah. I feel sick…
Further to my last, this game badly needs a patch….
I’ve known about the 44hz sound bug for a while now and have just learnt to deal with it but I assume some other people out there might have the same issue I have, I have a razer megalodon usb headset and in the properties of the sound device the functionality to change the device from 48 to 44 is greyed out, does anyone have a work around for this?

Hi. I’m encountering a very irritating problem. For some reason, and this has happened three times now, Skryim just randomly crashes. It’s literally random. It once happened when i was exploring in the middle of nowhere and this most recent time I was mapping from Winterhold to Dawnstar and the game just shut down. If anyone else has had this same random problem and has a solution it would be greatly appreciated.
Men i have a problem i cannot see nothing when i star to play the game in the introduction the game just dont work i cannot see a damm thing its like a crash
How do I do this for Windows XP?
It’s ok, my computer can play it.
I am running XP, athlon 2600, 1 GB ram, ati HD 2600 AGP….. hahahaha
It was unplayable on its own so then I got the ENBseries skyrim .ini file v5 (now v6, havent tried) http://enbdev.com/download_en.htm.
It became playable but would CTD every time I opened a map, dead body, hit esc, so basically unplayable.
Then I replaced that with the older ENBseries files (silent hill homecoming patch 10) that I used to run in fallot NV, and renamed the FalloutPrefs.ini to skyrimPrefs.ini and placed that in the skyrim folders.
Been playing 3 nights now without a single crash!!!!
I am pretty sure that this tutorial will help, but i cant do it on XP. I will look on google for the files you said and see if that fixes it. Thanks for the help Luke.
Hey man, I have similar pc and I´m running low settings with ENB mod. I have random crashes, every 5 -15 min.
What files you renamed and used, I have downloaded what u said (silent hill homecoming 10), but I don´t get it, what files to use/rename (d3d9.dll and rename enbseries.ini to enbpatch.ini?)
I would really appreciate if u can help.
It would be awesome to get this running on this old rig
D (xp2400+, 7600gt, 2gig and lots of heat)
Skyrim only plays on lowest graphical settings. I have a GTX465 with 1G RAM. It should be able to play at least “high” graphics.

ive encountered a problem where on startup, on the play/options/data files screen, when i click play, it asks me if i want it to make a change to my computer, no it closes, yes it reloads the page and same thing happens
Just like the people above me, i cant get past the play/options/data files screen anymore, everytime i press play, it refreshes the play/options/data files screen.
Ive had the game for a week now and it was working perfectly before this morning. I heard an update came out and did this.
CAN ANYBODY HELP WITH THIS?
I’ve got a really bad problem with Skyrim. The game launches from steam and all, but when I try to continue from the last save, it goes to the loading screen, but it doesn’t load. The text changes, and the image zooms in and out like usual, but it just never actually starts the gameplay. The worst part about it is that it works perfectly on my brothers windows 7 account. I’ve tried signing out on his account and then logging off, and then on to my account, but nothing works. Please help! It’s like I’ve taken an arrow to the knee.
This just started happening to me too. Exact same problem. Only started after the patch came out, so maybe it has something to do with that?
Sometimes it will load my last save, but it will get stuck on the next loading screen.
Same thing here. Exact same!
I’m like hard core gamer with skyrim too which makes it 1 gazillion times worse! I haven’t been on for approximately 50 hours!!!!!!
I log into steam, launch it, and sweet! its on the main menu where I can choose to “continue” “load” etc… so when I click continue where last saved or even when I click load to previous saves it seems like its operating properly because the picture comes up and it zooms in and out, and you can turn it around and all, and the hint/quote/tips thing keeps changing, and the smoke in the background is still going…. but it never finishes loading!!!???? It’s annoying. Same problem here! Never ever starts the gameplay! my bro is catching up to my level this whole time lol this blows… anyone fixed this problem yet? or anyone who had it fixed it? or anyone know how to fix it?
this is such a piece of shit that im quite frankly appalled that bethesda actually had the gall to release it. #1 i have no damn sound, second after the carriage arrives in the village the god forsaken human ai piece of shit wont get off the damn carriage!!!! two more complaints. steam, what a piece of shit that is with its multiple compatability issues and the fact you now have to have INTERNET to instal a SINGLE PLAYER massive rpg video game. the fact that this game doesnt work out of the box and i now have to wait until bethesda comes out with a patch, only problem with that….. i leave for a 6 month cruise for the navy in a week where i will have absolutely 0 ability to download any patch that comes out so what im left with is a game that doesnt even work and this game is so critically acclaimed i wont be surprised if this game gets reviewed as the worst release of the fucking year with all its glitches, issues and thoughtlessness
I’m playing im my laptop, i5 580 GT425. Whenever I come to Riverwood, the game freeeze.
can someone please give me a better answer on how to fix it when it crashes during the intro?
I have the solution ur all lookin for. One sure fire way to fix ur PC issues with Skyrim. Buy it for a console. U know, the platform it was made for. I havnt had any issues wit misloading or crashing. Dont have to worry bout system requirements or anything. All u need to do is put the disk in, install to hdd for the gfx boost and there u have it. All ur pc issues with Skyrim solved. ENJOY
I know i will
mine has a different type of crash. it crashes when i make a new game. idk how this happens, but it does. can someone help me?
My game crashes on as soon as it attempts to start. I already have 62 hours of gameplay and no settings have changed. This game is shit. I have tried several fixes.
Hi… Can anyone please tell me how to fix the error Steam shows me saying “the game is currently not available”. I uninstalled and reinstalled and re-downloaded everything, but it keeps telling me this. Even “support” is slow to respond.
Please, ive spent alot of money to be able to play this game.
Regards
Hey, new problem here, please help!!!
Whenever It gets to the videos at the beginning, wierd shapes appear on the screen, blocking the environment. This makes it unplayable.
My computer meets all the minimum requirerments, but i’m not sure about the graphics card. I have an Intel Graphics Media Accelerator HD.?
Please help, i want to play the game!!!
When I use the launcher, and hit “Play” the game crashed before ever loading anything and I get the following error:

I’ve been looking all over the place and haven’t been able to find anyone with this same problem, and I’ve tried dozens of fixes for similar problems with no luck. Any ideas?
OK i know some of u hate using cheat codes but if u whant to get across that bridge everyone is complaining use “TMM 1″ is shows all the map markers and let’s you travel there and even if u did not discovered it yet. hope that helps
James, you might want to get an actual graphics card. nvidia would be best for most games or ATI.
Please help. I don’t know what kind of application will help me play skyrim. When I click at the skyrim launcher, a window pops out that skyrim.exe is not a win32 application, how can I edit this? Please help.
Hello guys i cannot run the game. When i hit the play button on the launcher this error is appearing : System error – TESV.exe The program can’t start because X3DAudio1_7.dll is missing from your computer.Try reinstalling the program do fix this problem.
I will be glad if some one helps.
Hi,
I;ve been playing the game now for 100 plus hours and now suddenly I have a scren freeze or lock up whenever I use “Q” to select my favorites list. I tried retasking the key to “G” or another key , but it is not the key selection but the accessing of the favorites list that causes the lock up. I have sound, but the screen is frozen. Only way out is to key my way to the Task Manager.
The game has also randomly begun to crash to desktop.
I am on an Intel quadcore running at 2.40GHz, 3GB memory (Windows 7 32 bit) using ATI Radeon 6800 crossfired graphics
I’ve set sound at 16 bit 4.41 etc and turned anti aliasing off, but the probelme persists. Currently the game is playable, I just can’t use the favorites list anymore and have to make changes via the Tab key to access my inventories etc. Its a little awkward, but usable.
I have used task manager and System Mechanic to close or shut down all unneccessary backround programing.
I hope you have some ideas, because i sure don’t.
Thanks,
WGH
The Skyrim game crash problem arises when Windows Defender is running in background:
http://naumanlodhi.blogspot.com/2011/12/skyrim-game-crash-tips-to-fix-skyrim.html
i am not able to get out of the cart after the game starts in the first episode .what should i do to enter out of the cart!!
When I use the alt+tab and come back to the game, the screen freezes and turns black, but the sound still running.
What should I do?
Gabriel, I’m running windows 7 ultimate when this occurs, but usually when that happens I simply hold down alt again, and cycle all the way BACK through the program list until I get to skyrim again.. and then reselect it.
This should bring the program properly to the focus again, and you should regain video. Keep in mind though if you do this too much, you’ll likely crash Skyrim.
Hi
I played game for few hours and suddenly freezes.its in old ruins ancient city cave…and solved it by running game in windowed mode as admin just until i passed stone dor(place when i used amulet and destroyed dor)and later on i play in full screen mode without anny additional problems.
Sound is ok,framerate is ok
Hope it helps
I installed the game correctly but when it comes up to the opening screen, it becomes choppy and distorted. And by distorted i mean the whole screen is just shapes of gray and you cannot see the actual video. I have changed my audio devices to the 16 and 24 bit and tried every single option yet it still happens. Any help please?
Kyle, Have you figured out how to fix the shapes of Grey after level 1 has loaded?
Has anyone got a fix for the start screen freeze?
I have played around 50 hours (with only minor issues) and was starting to get into the game and now steam starts and shows the main launch screen but that’s as far as I get.
The launch screen just winks at me and won’t go any further. The steam log seems to think that I am actually playing but sadly no.
I notice that this seems to be a common problem, but not limited to any particlar set up has anyone solved this fairly terminal issue?
maljon
Yes, I have that same problem. Have you figured out a way to fix it. I would greatly appreciate it.
Hey guys,
I was wondering have someone idea how to fix a minor glitch…It not effects the game but feel in game.My character is hit by frost spikes durring fight and they just didnt disapeared.I dont know why is this happend…I tried almost everything I could remember to solve this issue but nothing seems to work.
If someone have similar issue or idea how to fix this please answer
thanx
My game has well over 100+ hours and still had constant crashes since patch 1.2 was introduced and even in 1.3.It appears that my game crashed due to the AUTOSAVE feature within the game being ON.
If you’re having constant and consistent crashes after a few seconds when playing the game then it is all due to the AUTOSAVE feature within the game.Turn OFF all variations of it and save nominally and should get rid of the Crashes at least for my PC Game under XP.
I found this fix on the Bethesda forums and apparently this should fix the issue. It appears the autosave feature isn’t working right and is intermittently responsible for the crashes.

Ok so my Skyrim keeps crashing right after the beheading and when the dragon lands right after character creation has there been any fixes for this yet?
My Skyrim is not responding when i try to launch it. Im running on a windows 7, 64-bit, Intel Core i3 @ 2.10GHz, Intel HD graphics. Can somebody please help ?
hi, i have this problem with skyrim.
everytime i play my pc crashes after a few minutes.
it’s getting really annoying. if you could help me fix this…
Hi,
Im Frans from Holland.
Skyrim is a asome game, a love oblivion, so i pre-orderd this game.
First two weeks no problem!
Now, sinds a week the game is crasching rendom to desktop, no error message!!!
I cant play this game like this!!!
update card drivers, even beta, and mainbord drivers
Setup: windows 7 ultimate 64 bit, asus nvidia 570 gtx, asus crosshair IV formula mainbord, 16gb drr3, 1855 mhz, 2x vertex3 solid state(not raid)cpu:amdPhenomII x6 1090T black edition.
My settings do not save. If I uncheck ‘windowed mode’ or change resolutions in the options menu on the Skyrim launcher, and then go back and check it immediately after, the settings are back to default. This occurs every time no matter what.
I have also edited the ini file to change the fullscreen value to 1 and I have changed the resolutions in the ini file but neither have done anything at all.
The files are NOT read only and SimplyBorderless doesn’t work because of the settings failure. Why don’t my settings save?
Like a lot of people, I’m also experiencing the “Black Screen of Death” at random periods while playing Skyrim. I thought it was an issue that needed to be patched with the game, so I set it aside to play CoDMW 3 and strangely enough on certain missions and Ops, I also get the Black Screen. This isn’t an issue I’ve ever had with any other game and my system is well above the recommended specs to run either game so it leads me to believe it’s a video driver issue. In reading through some of the posts, it seems a lot of people having similar issues are running the same series card as me, HD 5600 or higher. If anyone has some insight, it would be much appreciated.
Hello, my first few says of playing Skyrim had no problems that concerned me. There was the crashing to the desktop every now and then and I personally didn’t mind. As well as tiny graphic issues.
But one thing that has annoyed me, is that when I go to load my game up or ‘Continue’ it freezes. I tried again and again and it freezes, I can make a new game and load that perfectly fine. My character is level 35 too. I don’t want to start all over again, is there some way to fix this? Another things I noticed – is that when you go into your saved games and you see a picture of where you last saved, mine is just pixels and that black and white fuzzy screen stuff with some little colours. That’s not right. So if someone can please help, I’d appreciate it SO much
Thanks.

Thank you for any other informative site. Where else could I am getting that kind of info written in such an ideal means? I have a undertaking that I’m simply now running on, and I’ve been on the glance out for such information.
The game runned all fine until today, I started it and all the dialogues just pass away fast (not able to read 2 words in a sentence, and its gone) and i cant hear a word the NPC is saying.
managed to fix it: in MyDocuments/MyGames/Skyrim/ delete all the ini files * all but the Saves. It works fine now.
Hello, I have a problem mentioned in crashfix no. 1, but I have win XP.. Is there some solution for my OS and not for Win 7 only please?
Sorry for a mistake, I mean the first problem, before crashfix no. 1
I’m having a problem with mine. I just installed from steam and it installed fine from what I seen. I boot up the game and the dragon is purple, the sound is fine but then some of the screen goes red over top of the dragon being purple? now i know that thing isnt purple lol. Well then I start the game kind of confused and the wagon you start off on is gone the wheels are red and all of us are floating on air. and we just sit there while the sound, sounds like we are moving? Can anyone help or got any ideas how to fix?
Thanks!
When I launch the game the video does not work…
Hello,
An annoying problem here, im running windows 7, 32 bit, nvdidia card (dont know exact specs) and what has happened is that i went into the riften jail to complete a quest for sibil black briar in the jail. (killed the guard guarding the door) and after he gives me the key to his chest, i went back up to the exit.
However, when i exit, it goes to the loading screen, just as it’s supposed to, then, right when it seems that its about to finish, my game crashes to my desktop.. not even crashes, just, abruptly closes. Whats interesting is that the game managed to create an auto save of my right after leaving the jail (when my game crashes at the end of the loading screen) so i tried loading the auto save, but nope, as its loading the came closes to desktop. so then, i tried loading my quick save in the jail, and i tried using console commands to teleport myself out. But to no avail. It seems that whenever i try to leave the riften jail, if i have to go through a loading screen, i crash.
I had one error similar to this where whenever i got close to solitude (near the main gate, but not actually into it) my game would randomly close to desktop. None of this was happening until this blasted new patch.
Any help offered would be GREATLY appreciated, as i really dont want to start from the beginning.
- Thank you to all who offer an sort of soulution,
Timex007
hi guys
when i try to install the game, right after when the dragon icon manifests on the screen, a pop up notice will come out saying flowpoint error. and then the setup will no longer ensue.. how do we fix this?
thanks!!
sorry, i mean it says “invalid floating point error”.. please.. help…
hi every1

Hey everybody
my problem is that it crasher when trying to change the shout or magic stuff, i’ve played skyrim for 2-3 weeks and everything was running normally until now
I press Tab button, and when going left it just chrashes
Any idea why is it like that after playing it quite a while or how to repair it??
thanks
I have tried every crash fix on here & I still can not get it to run..It freezes mid loading screen. I updated absolutely everything and it still wont work. Like most it was working fine for a couple of days then just stopped working. I took a screen shot of where it freezes just so it makes it easier to decipher where I’m screwing up..
http://i43.tinypic.com/1zvdaug.png
Screen shot^^
Now, Since I installed the updates I have been experiencing CTD’s at random periods during the game. Up to update 1 everything was working swell, even with some upgraded texture packs installed. Since installing update 2 and 3 I have had nothing but problems… My suggestion, to those people experiencing random CTD’s during gameplay, is to reinstall skyrim and disable automatic updating in steam…
When i launch the game the bethseda inro comes up then fades away and a black screen. Few seconds later it jumps back to desktop. Im on windows xp and i think the problem is Hz maybe too high but itoned it down from my IDT control panel but that didnt work and i have no idea how to do it in the xp default sound panel
Hey, my game crash every time i trying to play in first part when im a prisoner and the dragon come then it crashing any help?
Hey, so my skyrim (for PC) was freezing from time to time and there were times that the game just freeze (but it doesn’t come back to normal) and there were times that even my PC, like, “hibernates”. But I used to play with earphones because the volume of my speakers was low. And then I stopped playing with earphones and until now I didn’t had this problem anymore… so if you use earphones, headphones or even speakers attached to your laptop or PC that has internal sound, try to play without them, it should solve the problem.
Love the game – hate the crashing. Has anyone experienced the weird purple shading and see-through objects? This is usually the indication that I am about to crash to desktop. You’d think Bethesda would want to fix this crap.
I really need help. Whenever I try going to Solitude, it just seems to crash. Doesn’t matter where, Solitude always crashes (and my frekin house is there) Unfortunately, I can’t fast travel to a different location because I am saved inside a building IN Solitude, so to fast travel I need to leave the building, but that means I will be in Solitude, and as I said, it crashes, so I’m stuck till I figure this out and/or get help.
My keyboard doesnt respond to skyrim anymore. After 56 hours if i go to a lockpicking screen or arcane enchanter, none of my keys respond to the commands AKA i cant tab out or A and D wont turn the lockpick around. AFTER 56 HOURS THIS FKN Happens what do you do honestly.
This is on my xbox, whenever i press x the game just freezes out of nowhere and i have to restart my xbox to go back on
Plz tell me how to fix this i rely on you!!!
I keep having this problem, usually after i’ve zoomed out to third person view but sometimes it just randomly happens, where the menus keep ‘sticking’ – i don’t know how to describe it any other way: when i scroll, nothing happens. This also happens in dialogue, making it impossible for me to choose any dialogue option other than the one at the top! In the main menu, the cursor is unable to select anything. Also, when i open books, the pages continually turn without me clicking the mouse buttons, making it impossible to actually read books, journals etc.
As i’m sure you can imagine, this is all really frustrating. I’ve been looking for fixes but i can’t seem to find anything. Any help or advice would be sincerely appreciated.
-Verify integrity of game cache-
1 Load Steam
From the Library section, right-click on the game and select Properties from the menu.
Select the Local files tab and click the Verify integrity of game cache… button.
Steam will verify the game’s files – this process may take several minutes.
Once the process is completed, the Check Window will automatically exit.
-This should fix most probs on Windows 7-
It searches Skyrim folders looking for files that may have been corrupted or missing.
Hey, I don’t particularly know where most of you are coming from. I have Skyrim for both the PC and XBox 360. Neither have many glitches at all, other then the occasional flying mammoth on the XBox. My computer has all of the required specs except for the Quad core processor, and the 1GB of ram on the video card, rest are nearly the exact same. I purchased both games on November 11th, and have only gotten the one patch for XBox. Do any of you have multiple programs running while playing Skyrim? Have you checked the fans on your computer, to see if it is overheating? Who did you buy your copy from? Check online elsewhere to see if any of these are possibly related to your problem. It seems unbelievable so many of you have the exact same problems. I have seen numerous gameplay videos online of people playing for hours straight with no crashes at all. I’d advise you to just keep searching, I guess. I don’t know how to help you beyond the few things I suggested. Hope all goes well!
My OS is Vista, by the way.
Hey, I can’t seem to hear any of the sound effects or footsteps while playing skyrim and it makes it very annoying to play. Any suggestons?
–My below post was meant as a reply to this one.
@Jon
Try going into your audio settings and turning up the SFX/Footstep settings? If they are already maxed out, try lowering the other setting (while keeping Master volume at max). Or, you might try backing up your save games, then uninstalling and reinstalling the game.
PLEASE HELP.
When i start up skyrim everything goes fine, main menu, loading screen, but when the first mission comes on(Im new to skyrim so idk if its called a “mission”) it looks like im inside of a tree, i see grass, wood , and some dimented looking shit. I have installed and updated my drivers, I have minimum requirements and everything should be working perfect, but i cant see anything I hear talking and i sometimes see a blonde guys head. HELPPPPPPP
Thank you
Reinstall from scratch, you’ve got some serious graphic issues with the game right there.
Please help me too! Everyone time i attempt to change areas ex. fast travel, go into a house, anything that causes screen to go black; it shuts down and goes to desktop. Also whenever i try to save, it closes down too? have any idea why?
After I press play, it shows several errors like “myholdlocation property has not been set”. I’m using XP and cannot change the sound format. What do I do?
By the way, I installed the latest direct x and also activated the game on steam.
Sounds like an installtion or tweaking issue.
Reinstall, then let me know how it goes.
Hello, please I need your help. When I try to run Skyrim, it opens me a window with Play,Options and others.. when I click Play, nothing happens and that windows opens again and again and again and I can’t do nothing..Please help me it’s getting me crazy
I need some help my game continue to freeze and i dtk what to do
My game freezes at the start of the game right after the guy driving the carriage shouts “shut up back there” our system is waaaaaaaaaay better than the requirements and I have the newest graphics driver and directx what could be the problem we’ve tried everything above and it still stops at that part
Just installed the game and when I click play I get a popup window with a rendering error. Trying to help my son out so any help is appreciated.
Well i’ve been looking for quite some time now, and couldn’t find any problem like this, so here it is:
I’ve played Skyrim for like 9 hours straight and it didn’t get a single freeze or crash or anything. Then, out of a sudden, every time i enter the game i play for like 6-9 minutes and the game freezes the screen, even though i can still hear the game going on as the guards hitting and such, but the screen is just frozen. Then, if i try to quicksave, the game crashes without any error message, and just closes up.
Been searching for like a week now for a fix for this problem, and no success so far, so if anyone got anything that might help, i’d ask to please reply this.
Note that this is NOT a 2-10 second freeze and then the game comes back. It freezes and DOES NOT come back, and then crashes into the desktop, pretty much like this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NyBOlshAN1A&feature=endscreen&NR=1
Don’t quicksave, like in oblivion, it can make the game unstable. Delete excess save games. if that doesnt work, backup your saves and reinstall skyrim completely.
It sounds like it is a memory leak issue, but bethesda assures us that they cured those programs long ago..
If THAT doesn’t work run it both as administrator and in compatibility mode for windows XP. Make sure you fixed any sound issues and are at the latest version of skyrim.
hello, i am doing the eldergleam sanctury quest and whenever i go near where the area for the eldergleam eanctury quest is i get a ctd, help?
*sanctury
sanctuary
Read the ctd section and try the solutions there.
If that doesn’t work, backup your saves and reinstall.
ive installed skyrim but after the beginning where bethesda studios is displayed the sound isnt working . what should i do?
This is covered in the article.
Read it please. If it did not work, say exactly what you did and maybe I can help you.
I already follow the instruction but still, there is no sound after the Besthesda logo. Help me.
make sure that you have the sound settings on the game right. load up the launcher and go to options and fiddle with the sound choices.
I play skyrim form my computer (via steam) and I can launch Skyrim.
But after i click continue game/ load game or new game the loading screen comes up and the game will actually not load. (it usually takes like 5 secs in the loading screen to load the game). After it doesn’t load I use the task manager and it says the Skyrim is not respondin.
please help
Right click and run as administrator.
This is covered in the actual article. Please read before responding.
OK
so pretty much
my brother sent me skyrim as a gift over steam
it downloaded properly but during installation at some ‘Microsoft .NET’ part, my sister came home and pushed the lid of my laptop down, putting it to sleep
when i opened it back up, the installation had quit and when i try to play skyrim it says preparing to load but stays that way
i need assistance
Step one: Slap your sister, teach her to leave your shit alone.
Step two: download a program called Revo Uninstaller Pro, and use it to uninstall skyrim, do an advanced scan (you will know what I am talking about when you are uninstalling it) for leftover files and programs. Delete all of them.
Step three: Reinstall skyrim. It should reinstall microsoft.net part as well, if not search for that on google and reinstall it manually.
That should fix your “partial installation” issue.
For anyone else who needs assistance, AND HAS READ THE ENTIRE ARTICLE, please feel free to email me for help at dumnem@hotmail.com, please label your subject as “Skyrim help” so I do not accidentally delete it.
My game will crash randomly mostly outside like 5-20 minutes in game. I can run ultra settings its recommended but i use high and it still randomly shuts my WHOLE computer down and brings me to some MSI mother board Baloney. And I have to restart my computer. Im about to give up because i cant barely play it because of the Random crashes.
Try to follow the stability fixes we have listed here, read the article and try all of the tweaks such as disabling V-Sync.
Also, try running the launcher and game (the .exe files in your skyrim directory) in compatibility for windows XP SP3, and as administrator.
Remember to clear up your savegames occasionally, it’s best to keep 3-4 while occasionally deleting and re-saving to improve savegame stability.
Update the game to the latest version, that adds address aware, which allows skyrim to use more than two gigs of memory which dramatically improves stability.
Try to reduce the quality on skyrim when outdoors, that is the hotbed source of crashes at the moment.
Try the sound fix too (changing sound to 44.1K studio quality)
All of this is mentioned in the article. If for some reason all of this has failed, run steam and right click on the game in the library and select “verify local game cache” to check for any corrupted files. If you’re STILL having issues, completely uninstall the game and reinstall it.
Make sure to backup your saves if you are going to patch, reinstall, or mod the game to be on the safe side.
Feel free to email me at dumnem@hotmail.com for additional help after you have tried my instructions and read the article.
I need help…. Just built a really nice PC last weekend, picked up Skyrim and can’t do anything up to Character Creation… GeForce GTX 560 Ti, 8GB Ram, 7200 RPM Hard Drive, even a water cooling kit for my case and a 750 watt power supply. I have the new beta drivers from Nvidia. I have also tried the sound fix and that didn’t work. Scaled back even though I shouldn’t have to and those tests didn’t work out. I have no mods for the game, I am LOST and I hate it. I want to place this wonderful game. I also during the character creation get some kind of blue type of thing in the corner that says test. I am also running Windows 7 64 bit… Any help please!!!!!! Battlefield 3 runs smooth on ultra FYI.
This is new.
Try to reinstall the game.
If that doesn’t work, try running skyrim in compatibility mode for windows vista SP2.
If that doesn’t work make sure you don’t overclock your CPU or have crossfire turned on.
Hey, Asking for help for my friend.
During the game they’re getting ridiculously low FPS, and spells are showing as invisible. The hands for the spells will glow slightly, but the spells wont show. The ground will be charred showing the spell is working, but we cant see the animation for the spell itself.
She’s been trying to play on her laptop, which is an hp pavillion dv7, running Windows 7 with AMD M880G with ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4250 as the graphics card. We’ve updated the graphics drivers, directX, tried lowering the settings, tried turning off vsync, tried setting the priority up, we’ve defragmented the computer, closed every possible process that isnt needed, and everything else we could think of, and all that has come from this is that its getting worse and worse each time she tries to play.
Anyone know of possible fixes for this, or is the laptop itself not good enough to run the game?
What is her processor speed, and how much RAM does she have? She can’t run it without at least 2.4 Ghz dual core (or equivalent) processor and 2 gigs of ram.
Basically, make sure she meets the minimum requirements.
But what you have here is a graphics issue, like the textures and meshes aren’t inside the game so they don’t show up. the easiest way to check this without having to reinstall is going into your steam library, rightclicking on skyrim, and click “verify local game cache” to make sure you aren’t missing any of the files because of a bad install. IF that doesn’t work try to run it both as administrator and in compatibility mode for vista SP2.
If all else fails, reinstall the game completely and try again.
Note: all of this advice is assuming you possess the latest patch, if you have a problem try patching because the recent patch added PC stability.
As always anyone seeking help on skyrim can email me at dumnem@hotmail.com make sure you label it as “skyrim help” so I do not accidently delete it.
Good luck and fun gaming!
Another trick for radeon and nivida cards is to CTRL-ALT-DELETE to bring up the “security menu” (that has options such as locking the computer or bringing up task manager) click CANCEL, then go back towards the game, this has proven to improve FPS by as much as 15 with certain cards.
my game starts up but when i click play the window just flashes away and then reappears and the game doesnt actually launch
can anyone help?
i had pretty bad crashing problems where skyrim would crash around five minutes into the game. often it was to the desktop, but sometimes it was a bsod because of a system_service_exception. tried everything listed above but it still crashed. finally i decided to BACK OFF ON MY MEMORY OVERCLOCK and it WORKED. sadly i lost plenty of bandwidth but i soon discovered how to tune my timings and recover some of it. might just work for some of you other overclockers out there.
I go onto steam and then run skyrim and then it comes up with the menu and i cluck on start and then it just closes?
Can someone help

FOR THOSE WITH ISSUES STARTING THE GAME:
-Make sure it isn’t a pirated copy, that can cause issues.
-go to your skyrim folder and run tsv.exe as administrator and use that to start the game.
-Set both the launcher and the game executable as administrator and in compatibility for vista SP2
as always you can email me at dumnem@hotmail.com for help, title it “skyrim help” so I do not accidentally delete it
Hey
So I just installed skyrim on my laptop, recommended settings was medium, but I put them down a little just to be safe, as this isn’t an all that great laptop.
I played for like an hour and a half, and on my way to bleak barrow den, it just randomly crashed to desktop without any warning. Im using xp…
Any ideas?
I’m just install skyrim to my laptop. Could somebody please recommend the settings for the game. Right now I’m using intel core i3, radeon graphics HD 6470M 1GB, 4GB RAM.(Sorry for my bad English anyway)
If anyone wants to know i found a possible fix for crash to desktop, it took me many hours of messing around with the settings in the ini files. If you enter or change this line in your SkyrimPrefs.ini to the following.
[Display]
iTexMipMapSkip=1
It solved the problem for me of crashing while strolling around many locations in the outside environment.
I wasn’t able to change the advanced properties of my sound.
Are you in the right place?
Click Start menu, control panel.
If view set to catagory, click (hardware and sound) then (manage audio devices).
If other view just click (sound).
Right click on (speakers), select (properties), click (advanced) tab, change (studio quality) to (cd quality) and apply, press yes if device is in use then ok.
You can also try starting windows up in safemode F8 and change from there, maybe an application, service or process is stopping you from changing the settings.
I have 1 solution to stuttering ingame, something i noticed a while back on ghost recon, also the same on other games. If you have (readyboost) active on a device, switch it off, or unplug/remove any external flash cards/usb.
Im really getting sick of Skyrim, if its not one problem its another. I had many of the same problems with fallout new vegas, i stopped playing that after a few hours and never played it since. Its obviously something to do with the game engine there using, its a shame. Bethesda need to work from the ground up next time. If i hear any problems like these on there next title, im not buying it, the frustration of trying to fix there problems with mods and constant tweaking is driving me nuts, i think i`ll uninstall this one as well. Do they give money back on faulty software?
I gave Skyrim another shot. I deleted both Skyrim.ini and Skyrimprefs.ini, set the executable to Vista Compatible not any sp version and ticked all the boxes except the first 2 Run commands, reinstalled directx jun09 2010 and the latest version, i reinstalled vcredist_x86 2010 and updated my sound card drivers, installed only Nvidia 290.53 beta Display Drivers, uninstalled anything else to do with Nvidia including Control Panel, set the Sound to 24bit 48000hz, used only the d3d9.dll from AntiFREEZE_performance_patch_9_ENBSeries-2531 and used SkyBoost_r3 only no other programs. Then i ran the skyrim launcher, after Auto Detect i Reduced everything in the Details Tab by 1 only and reduced Distant Object Detail by 1, ticked the Object Detail Fade, then ran Skyrim, after loading the level i check the frame rate with Fraps, moved around a bit to find the lowest dip in FPS then changed the FPSLimit in enbpatch.ini to that and set EnableFPSLimit to true, then i checked the Skyrimprefs.ini to make sure iTexMipMapSkip was set to 1. Now finaly its working, almost 2 hours in and no problems so far, no stuttering, no crashing and no huge FPS drops that would linger and every other minor problem has seemed to have disapeared. I hope all of this information helps somebody else. Its a Brilliant game by the way, they`ve combined all the good ideas from Mods made for Oblivion and removed the irritating aspects of it, but im still very hesitant about Bethesda`s future Titles, im not looking forward to waiting for patches and spending many many many hours of my time fiddling about with cfg files and other programs if the patches dont work just to get the damn thing to work.
am having a ctd while using bound sword in high lvl charcter
however it works perfectly with the same character but in old saved game like lvl 3 :/
If Anybody Is Having Sound Problems I Have The Solution Go Here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MWuv0qlGwGY&context=C3e97fb8ADOEgsToPDskJtoaGFj0bkwMHwvatzIXaN
my skyrim launcher restarts every time i press play
and i think i have TESV.exe
everytime I open skyrim, it works. But when it comes the starting menu it suddenly stopped, I haven’t played Skyrim because of that problem, anybody help? (bad grammar)
Thanks for the tip on the sound. It solved my crashing game as soon as i chose anything in the menu.
I can not see any thing while plaing even though at the main menue, every thing is fine.
I have a problem with a launch it says:Bit42 was not found.Something like that anybody help?
when i press continue in skyrim the screen freezes which it gives you information about the game.Any help?
Hogart,
Try seeing if you can load your save from another point in the menu, and/or load an older save, and then quit out… load up Skyrim again, and then try continue.
This worked on older titles such as Fallout 3. Give it a whirl.
i meant the screen before you start playing
salve ho un problema sono entrato in una grotta e appena devo uccidere un orso il gioco si chiude da solo,ho aperto altri salvataggi ma non crasha.qualcuno ha avuto questo problema?
The absolute solution to the random but certain graphics card kernel mode crash (I had it on my NVIDIA GTX 460) is to download MSI Afterburner and set your GPU fan speed to around %60 so when it’s on load, it doesn’t crash anymore.
i use steam and click play and then i click play in the little skyrim window that opens up, and it will get to where i load my game, and i click load and then the screen goes black and my pc reboots. I know it has nothing to do with my hardware, when i first got the game i was able to play it for as long as i wanted and then after about a week it would freeze after 25-30 and reboot. now i cant even play the game for a second. i think im gonna uninstall it and then re-install it, and if that doesnt work im gonna buy a dvd version off of amazon and install it that way without steam.
I’ve tried every listed fix here, and my game continues to crash on launch. This has only started a few hours ago, and I’ve done nothing different from the past several weeks of playing. Windows 7/ATI card/Min reqs met. I have no clue what to do, and it’s frankly beginning to piss me off.
i found good solution for startup-desktop crash(# problen no.4). First go to folder C:\Users\USER_NAME\Documents\My Games\ and check if you have a Skyrim folder, if yes delete it. After that run TESV.exe, it’ll run in window mode and create new Skyrim folder in MYGAMES directory. From that folder copy skyrim.ini and keep it in other place.
Now delete Skyrim folder again and lauch SkyrimLauncher.exe, and make your own settings and run game (it won’t run – crash).
So go back to Skyrim folder in MyGames directory an paste skyrim.ini. Now run game by TESV.exe ONLY!
I’t works good on my pc, so it might be usefull.
[...] won’t bore you with details, but after much searching and reading and testing of setting I finally got it to [...]
I did not read all the million zillion comments, but if you are using XFire you might get crash on 99% of the launches. Taking out XFire-In-Game cured it at least for me
I’m not entirely sure whether or not anyone else is having this problem, but every time I try to open my magic menu, the game crashes with no error message or warning of any sort.
I have tried:
Verifying the cashe on steam
Turning off all mods (Exclusively from Steam Workshop)
Waiting for a while/Fast traveling
Learning a new spell
Please let me know if any one has experience with this issue as well, would be nice to know I’m not the only one.
Ok my problem is the common “startup crash”. Except I can’t fix it like everyone else. I tried these solutions:
-Update graphic drivers and DirectX.
-Lower audio quality
-Restored original .ini files.
-Used only GPU
-Changed conpatibility.
It works only on Win95 compatibility but it’s windowed and I can’t play properly. Plus I was able to play until yesterday!!!!! Why doesn’t it work anymore?
Hi sir. . .I already tried the steps but after clicking new game then selecting Yes, the whole application will close. . .Please need your help. . . my FB account, http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1101878671
MAP CRASH ATI 5650, found this on a site, i works wonders for me,
the map is now is horrible to see but dont crash my laptop, so i can play, im happy right now!.
I’ve fixed the problem for myself. Not sure if it will work for others.
I found map .ini settings on an nvidia guide.
[MapMenu]
uLockedObjectMapLOD=8
uLockedTerrainLOD=8
fMapWorldMaxHeight=150000.0000
fMapWorldMinHeight=1500.0000
fMapWorldZoomSpeed=0.600
The above settings can be added to the bottom of Skyrim.ini and control map detail, as well as max zoom in and out, and zoom speed.
I simply played with the detail numbers until I found that…
uLockedTerrainLOD=7
…or lower allowed me to view the map when every other setting caused a driver crash.
Hope this helps some. This obviously lowers the graphical settings on your world map, but if it would otherwise mean a system crash, then this is the lesser of two evils.

Hello everyone!
I am currently having a small, but very annoying bug in skyrim. This is using the xbox 360 gamepad on the pc version. When I press start pressing the RT crashes the game to the desktop without an error. The weird thing is, I can press the LT twice before it crashes. I have repeated this extensively and it is exactly like that. Start menu, 1 press on RT game crash, 2 press game crash. I downloaded the right drivers for the gamepad and nothing. If anyone has had this issue, or knows of a possible solution, please let me know. It would be greatly appreciated!
Im having the exact same problem cant seem to find anyone who knows what to do about it :/
This just started happening to me, anyone ever find a fix?
hello.. i got his problem..
i just downloaded some mods.. mostly armor mods…
before i install all these.. the game runs perfect…
but after i install these mods.. suddenly everytime i enter jorrvaskr i CTDed, entering Dragonsreach i CTDed, when i try to get out of whiterun.. its fine.. but when i try to fast travel i CTDed, and because i am so annoyed.. i turn off all my mods, and try again.. the problem remains the same… running out of ideas.. i delete all my saves ( i think it’s corrupted or sumthing ) after that.. i try to start a new game.. but I CTDed AGAIN.. can someone help me with this problem ?
thanks in advance. =)
I’m having problem installing the game it says the .exe is valid but is for a machine other than the current. cuz i am using windows xp 64bit it sucks…. can someone help me?
After trying almost all the so called fixes for this problem I finally managed to resolve it. The sound used to work great in 32 bit but when I ran Skyrim in a 64 bit environment the sound wouldn’t work…… Here’s the way I fixed it.
I Downloaded and installed the latest 64 bit sound card drivers for my MoBo. That didn’t fix it but I then went to the microsoft website and D/loaded and installed Direct X 9.
Bingo! The sound works a treat.
I hope this saves you all days of research and frustration.
Addition to my last post. The URL for Active X is http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=35
I have a problem. When I go to the main of the game, and press play, “Unable to load originalsteam.dll.

I have a problem with my graphics, for some odd reason whenever I start up a game, the game world graphics are retarded. For some reason, whenever I’m outside half of my screen is filled with pixels that show me through the ground and buildings and other things to the sky, and whenever I’m inside there’s a clump of glitchy pixels next to fire pits. I think it has to do with the amd catalyst 12.3 update for my vid. driver, should I work on updating all of my drivers or wait for a patch
http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561198044851917/screenshot/468612831934048854?tab=public
Here’s one of my 2 pics with the damn glitch. And I think the problem really is that the effects such as clouds, water and light seem to go through buildings, characters, props etc. If you can help me, tell me how to fix it ASAP!
Im encountering the same pixel flaw as Sean and it is soo anoying, i cant play the game with that shit !!!
I also think it is the amd catalyst update that is the problem but what the fuck ?? plz< tell how to fix it.
IT WORKS IF YOU SWITCH YOUR ANTIALIASING OFF, BUT IT MAKES THE GAME LOOK SOO SUCKY AND PLAYSTATION 2 LIKE THAT YOU DONT WANNA PLAY THE GAME, THX FOR NOTHING BETHESDA !!
AND FOR THE RECORD I HAVE A ATI RADEON HD 5800 SERIES GRAPHICS CARD
i then tried to download the old catalyst patch, but that didnt work either, FUUUUCK !!
I have a weird one. I was playing fine on a win 7 machine in low resolution, then I bought a new much better computer also with win7
So i installed and steam updated the files so that all my settings transported over, now it looks great and runs fast but one thing is wrong. If I move forward, or attack or cast, then i cannot look or turn to the right or left. This makes combat almost impossible.
Strange thing is that if the (always run) key is depressed then I can change direction.
try using another mouse via usb instead of the pc mouse pad worked for me hope this helps
After downloading the game and everything, i click launch and the play menu pops up, after i click play, a black window named Skyrim comes on the top-left corner of the screen and after some time, it says ” Failed to utilize renderer,ShaderModel3 required but not supported by your video card”. please help me, can i get the file that it states without having to buy a new video card? thanks!

Hello everyone
Lately I’ve come to a problem with Skyrim after playing some time. The game crashed right after a short period of time (not over a few minutes). I searched the entire net to find the solution to my problem. After long search and no findings, I solved the problem myself, and wanted to share my experience with you.
Because my brother and I play with different characters, I downloaded and used the save game manager. I did that in order to not letting our saves be mixed.
For those who are interested, available here:
http://www.curse.com/mods/skyrim/skyrim-profile-manager
My solution is this: I accidentally made a “backup” saves of the Standard save (it is an option within the manager). Then the problem started. The solution- DELETE ALL BACKUP FILES! There’s no other way. If you still don’t want to delete them, just copy them to another directory then the manager’s game saves.
Hope I helped,
The Doc.
my skyrim is okay with the loading screens, sound, start menu and all but the main problem is the the screen i can see anything its like a pile of triangles and colors when i move the mouse they move and sometimes i get a glimpse of the game but still cant play, its in my laptop. i3 processor intel hd
I’ve been encountering a problem that forces me to restart my computer. Sometimes it happens while fighting a dragon with ice breath; when the dragon breathes ice at me the screen suddenly goes all one color, sometimes light blue, and the speakers start buzzing. The computer refuses to respond until I shut it down. I’ve also had a few crashes while casting Lesser Ward. On these occasions the screen turned all different colors, but in a pattern like a seeing eye maze. Can anyone help?
Does anyone know how to go into full screen PLEASE ANYONE!
Open the Skyrim Launcher and then go into options. near the bottom there will be an option to open it in a window and have it fullscreen. Just check the box next to the option for fullscreen mode.
I run an iso Skyrim game, and it worked until a couple days ago, and now every time i try to run the game it automatically closes. When i tried to uninstall it so that i could reinstall it, the program didnt even show up on my list of programs. Can i fix this?

So every time I get on the game it sais bethseda and then goes to the main screen but before it shows the skyrim title it just shuts off, anyone know how to fix this?
!!!Guess what!!! I just found a way to fix the crash after the bethesda logo, go to the data files on the beginning screen and uncheck them all, because most likely you just got a bad mod.
Nice find Krayt! Thanks for helping out.
no problem
THANKS ALOT!!! You are my hero
That it was so simple is just incredible! BIG THANKS

Hi,
I recently came across loading bug myself.. had vanilla skyrim, no mods. Tried setting all options to Low. No result. Tried PC restart and stuff, knowing that all my drivers were up to date, I saw no other way to get things right to reinstall the game.
BUT before I did, I found someone saying that deleting all but last 5-10 saved games has been fix for such problem. So I did. I deleted 6GB worth of saved games, leaving few Indoors and most outdoors saves. I loaded the indoor game and it loaded. I then ran the most recent save to continue my gameplay…Voila.
I suggest you to try that, eventhough i had 20GB free space on HDD, this seemed to save my nerves from uninstalling the game. GL and ’til next Skyrim bug
one other thing, if you og c:/Users/-/My Documents/my games/ skyrim delete that folder then go to c:/ program files/ steam / steam apps/ common/ skyrim and delete skyrim folders it comepletly makes your skyrim clean after you donload it from steam, and if you got a crack or something else like that just re-download it
thats how i fixed mine it is tested and will work, and if you have other problems go to control panel, sound , your sound player(has a green bar moving), properties, advanced , 24 bit 441000hz and that will fix it, if nothing i said works for your skyrim, i would report it to bethesda
i have figured out a solution for my problem. It seems that having a bounty on you from the faction your dealing with on the quest can cause it to crash. happened to me on liberate the reach. After going to jail in several places not sure which one fixed it but i was able to continue and beat the quest.
Prob solved with step one, it was audio issue.
Big TNX!

hey i was wondering if anyone has found fix for the game randomly crashing when on the first scene talking to the storm clocks and the thief i have tried all of these solutions and not found anything to work .
I have a weird type of ‘crash’. I can see all the loading screens and the menu screens perfectly, but the main game-play screen has a cracked screen look, it makes the game impossible to play. I’m running vista 32 it with 4 gig ram allocated to the game but it still won’t work, I know my computer can handle it because I can see 1/4 of the game-play screen but the rest is has the cracked screen look, I brought it from steam but they cant work out the problem. any help is greatly appreciated!!!
my computer runs on windows seven and meets the minimum requirements, but skills like frostbite, flame doesnt have visual effect.. My character just put up his hand and they take damage furthermore when in conversation when facing the speaker there is no sound whereas when they are at our side i can listen clearly please help me!
okay, so i just got and started playing skyrim. i had this glitch when i start a new game and it gets to the intro, theres no sound. at first, though, other than the sound issue, the blonde dude looks at me and mouths something then continuously stares at me like a blonde life-size bobble head. when we get into town, we see everything we’re supposed to, but the blonde guy is still looking and the other two are doing the same thing as they were doing in the beginning. after a minute, we run into a wall. the cart stops, but the driver acts as if the cart is still going, and we dont get off. the blonde dude continues to stare like a bobble head and his buddies dont do anything. instead of getting executed, instead of internal damnation, im eternally having a staring contest with mr. blonde bobble and the ugly bros. what do i do to fix this? really want to play this game. thanks!
Any fix to this? And no I didnt pirate the game, downloaded off of steam. I emailed Bethesda tech support but no word back yet.
Whenever I try to load a save, my game starts freezing on the loading screen.
Right when the dragon shouts at the very beginning my game freezes. I just bought and haven’t been able to play it yet. This is very frustrating and none of these have worked. Can someone please help?
my game crashes every 3 minutes to desktop. i tried disabling all mods, going into windowed mode and adjusting sound preferences and it still doesn’t work. i want my money back
Ok I had the “crashes after logo” error when I started the game. To fix this I removed all of the mods that I added, restarted steam and now it works.
Hi, i´ve just encountered a weird problem: I installed Skyrim 4 days ago…and it was working let´s say more or less ok (sometimes – like maybe 3times total during those 4 days of playing game crashed to deskop…but no major problem). But like hour ago…i just walked my character out of town for a hunt (no quest nothing…just killing animals for pelts)… i walked towards animals….and game froze and crashed so hard it restarted my pc…ever since than i couldnt load my saved games…not by continue, not by manually choose it….tried to reinstall the game…i thought something might got bit screwed after that restart. But it didn´t help
making new char. making save and load works…but the old ones…that i threw into save folder after this test won´t…it kinda sux…since i´ve played the char for a while….had lvl 25 and already been trhought some stuff, had nice ammount of cash, house etc…would like to get back to it….anyone who could give me a advice, how to fix it? My PC is ok to handle it on highest setting with no probs….small crashes i gave to inperfection of the game (bugs etc sometimes). If anyone could help me i would be so happy. Oh fyi: no mods used/installed.
i installed the game started playing everything was fine until i went to see esbirn in riftin there is no sound when he talks.now i’ve reached the truce negotiation gathering and when it’s time for stupid esbirn to talk he just stands there with everybody on the table looking at him and i cannot complete the game…now what can i do to fix thi problem i already re-installed it but it is still the same.can anybody help me??
hai guys, so for some reason when i go in to load my last save, the usually loading screen starts up but crashes a few secs later. i’m not sure what the problem is. i’ve tried the universal solution at the top of the page but it did not work.
WheN I open the game and click play it flashes and then does nothing. I downloaded directs and still had the same problem. Help?
Well its not a common low end game, this game which needs a high end machine and updated drivers of audio, video and directx helps, but if you still have problems on first dungeon, download a mod to skip the first dungeon and make a new character, works like a charm, the name of the mod its “Live another life” and you can get this mod on steam, besides non original game with crack its suicide on this game, skyrim really need the most updated version to anything, especially some mods.
I mean: “This game needs a high end machine” if you use PC…
Quad core recommended and VGA Nvidia Geforce 260 or ATI 4980HD.
Check on web about tweaks if you dont have the recommended specs and go to graphic options (yes before hit play/start and open the game with Bethesda logo) and use the lowest resolution possible with low or none focus in everything, yes, lowest configuration possible on all stuff and effects.
This should make your game runs faster and lag free, besides check integrity of your game files often, corrupted files its common when you get stuff on steam or running the game and crash/freeze.
As you can read on posts up there, anti-virus or Windows Defender like anything else must be disabled to play, well even gadgets on my Windows 7 its good to hide at least.
I have a problem when i go in the darkbrotherhood sanctuary my game crashes I already did the missions but im trying to go back in to get the stone to join the thieves guild pls help me
I’ve had strange problematic bug two times now. Both times occurred in Windhelm when there was vampire attack. As the battle begins I loose almost all the controls to my character and it start controlling itself. If I try to go to menus the game is selecting things by itself. I have to use CTRL+ALT+DELETE to close the game. The behaviour continues in Windows side. If I open for example notepad numbers start to occure without me doing anything..
hey guys, just wanna ask, i was just installing skyrim, but, do you guys remember when it says it is installing directX? the CD just pops out of my dvd drive, then after the installatin, it says, “d3dx something” i cant actually remember is missing, then when i reinstall it, it says that the product has failed in some microsoft logo verification. any fixes here? i dont have internet btw…
I’ve got a bigger problem than Crashes and that..
I’ve downloaded skyrim….
I’ve opened the file…
Whats next?
Every time i try to load the game, i’m able to make it to the main menu. But then, instead of the fog thats’s supposed to be around the skyrim logo, i get strange purple boxes that cover the screen, blocking the logo and continuing even after i click new game. i’ve waited 30 mins to see if it was lagging, but it continued, and could only be stopped by manually restaring the laptop. Only once was i able to stop the game with the”qqq” command. Whats wrong with it ?
When i Click setup.exe to install skyrim, the dragon logo appears then nothing happens, any fix?
Hi, I absolutely love this mod, but I’m running into very low fps when I run this mod ~ 10 fps.
I have a GTX 680m, icore7, 16gb of ram, all drivers and directX updated. I added every HD texture mod and stay at 60 fps easy. I’m seeing a 50 fps drop when I try to run this mod?!? Something is wrong and its not my computer specs.
I tried step 7: vsync disabled but no luck. Any advice?
EDIT: I figured it out! Everyone with nvidia optimus have to override there d3d9.dll file because FXAA and enb’s utilizes the integrated card. Install “HiAlgoBoost FPS Performance Accelerator 2″. Read the Installation guide instructions and follow it exactly:
(The section that helped me)
=== WHAT TO DO WHEN non-ENB d3d9.dll-based MODS ARE ALSO USED ===
Note: this works no matter ENB mods are also present or not.
Examples of non-ENB d3d9.dll-based mods: Standalone SMAA, FXAA Post Process Injector.
1. Rename other d3d9.dll to, say, d3d9_other.dll
2. Edit HiAlgoBoost.ini so that the part of [PROXY] section looks as following:
[PROXY]
EnableProxy_d3d9 = true ; Can be used to…
ProxyLibrary_d3d9 = d3d9_other.dll
On your .exe file that you launch the game with, right click and use “Run with graphics processor” and choose your better card. Probably set it to default too.
Hopefully this helps someone, I couldn’t sleep till I figured this out.
I was running around in Windhelm, when the game randomly crashed! The background music/sound but not voices were still playing but The whole game was frozen. So I turned off the computer and when I turned it back on again, Steam wouldn’t open at all and neither would any of the other games. When I tried to delete steam and reinstall it, it said that steam was already running in another program. When I tried to boot up Skyrim as a test, It said that steam_api.dll was missing. What have I done? Can it be fixed? I am at my wit’s end. Someone, please help me.
