Max Payne 3 Crash Fix and Fixes to Errors, Freezing, Lagging, CTD, Poor FPS, Black screen, No Sound
Problem #1 Max Payne 3 Crash Fix – Crash to Desktop upon Launch / Startup
If Max Payne 3 randomly crashes upon launching the game, ensure or try the following:

- Update your nVidia / ATI graphics drivers. Check our Technical References page for proper and official download links.
- Turn off SLI / Crossfire then start the game. See if it stabilizes Max Payne 3 performance.
- Turn off your anti-virus software before launching the Max Payne 3, but make sure you turn it back on after playing. Make sure Windows Defender is also disabled.
- Try using only one GPU first (turn the other one off via your nVidia / ATI graphics control panel)
- Try running the game in Windowed Mode (frequently works for low-end PCs)
- Disable anti-aliasing and filtering, restart Max Payne 3
- Disable V-sync, restart Max Payne 3
- Disable background apps, and turn off your anti-virus software
- In Windows 7 right-click the Max Payne 3 exe file, go to the ‘Compatibility Mode’ tab and check ‘Disable Desktop Composition’
- Run through our list of general fixes, which will most likely resolve your Max Payne 3 crash problems
Problem #2 Max Payne 3 Crash Fix – Max Payne 3 Crashes right after pressing the ‘Play’ button
In Windows 7 go the Max Payne 3 installation folder, right-click the Max Payne 3 exe file, go to the ‘Compatibility Mode’ tab and check ‘Disable Desktop Composition.’ Then try running Max Payne 3 once more.
Problem #3 Max Payne 3 Texture Fix – Bad Textures, Texture Breaks, Texture Glitch on gaming laptop
This is only for gaming laptops, but could work for some PCs. Note that this is an advanced solution, and only try this if other basic solutions such as disabling anti-aliasing and filtering failed for you. If your BIOS has the option, disable ‘Switchable Graphics’. This will remove your laptop PC’s ability to automatically switch between the onboard intel graphics card and the nVidia / ATI graphics chip, thus smoothening out gameplay.
Problem #4 Max Payne 3 Crash Fix – For Quad Core and Multi-Core PCs
If you’re on Quad Core, try this fix to address any crash issues:
- Start the game
- Alt+Tab Out of the game
- Open Task Manager
- Right click on Max Payne 3.exe
- Set Affinity
- Select core 0 and 1 only. You need to run the game on two CPU’s basically, so to avoid the crash to desktop.
Problem #5 Max Payne 3 Controller Fix – Xbox 360 or Other Controller Doesn’t Work
There are two known possible solutions as of writing for this controller bug:
- Manually download and install any Max Payne 3 game patch from the official source instead rather than automatically updating via Steam or any similar game client.

i have 60-70 fps but it seems like the fps is really low, i have somthing like mouse lag, cant play like this its hard, any fix for that?
Hello there, does this happen all the time while playing? If so try going to the control panel and setting 3D settings to “application controlled” (if using nVidia). Or worst case, try lowering your reso and go into windowed mode.
My keyboard is not working … mouse is Ok, game (@ beggining sequence etc) is running smooth, but keyboard (even 2 of them) are not responding. Didnt have such problems with any game so far…
Make sure no other USB device is plugged in and try again. Seems like an issue with power coming from your USB ports.

Sounds like a DirectX problem. Did you update it?
Heh Yoni . use tab and go to rockstar home when the game strucks at the loading screen. Then login using rockstar id and then click exit. The game will get through the loading screen now!!

for me the game works fine just a bit of a sound problem..sound goes faster than the video…my fps are 60-65 on maxed out settings..tried lowering the settings but same shit..someone now how to fix the sound problem?

i keep getting freeze/crash at title screen (max payne 3) when u need to press enter to go to main menu. I updated all my driver checked all system setting and did everything what i could find on forums but geet getting error :

My Specs: Sandy Bridge Core i5, Switchable Nvidia GT 555, plenty of Ram, etc.
So I did a clean reinstall, updated my Nvidia driver, DirectX, etc., but I still can’t get the game to run. I launch through the main exe (I disabled desktop composition like you said), the intro starts great, audio is clear, little Rockstar Games logos and stuff, then when it gets to the main title screen, it just says: Max Payne 3 and when I hit play it says: Loading, but no matter how long I wait it never loads, and eventually it just crashes. I did everything you said, even changing my Nvidia settings so that it always uses the High Performance Nvidia processor, but nothing is working. Can you help me?

My keyboard doesn’t respond in game.
its not a USB problem. the keyboard is fine
game runs smoothly mouse works fine.
only the keyboard dont works in the game (menu and game itself)
widows related keys works (Alt-Tab and ctrl-alt-del works as is the windows key etc…)
but in game keys not responding at all.
im not the only one.

Same here, keyboard not working ingame. Exactly like Sas described. My only two usb devices plugged in are keyboard and mouse. Can’t remove any of those obviously. Hope there is some fix for it, weird issue, never had something similar.

Hi When I complete chapter 12 (battle on the roof of the collapsing building) It goes through the cutscene then crashes to desktop after seeing around 2 seconds of the next chapters cutscene. I have set everything to low including DX9 and I have even restarted the chapter playing through the end of 11 and all of 12 and still it crashes.
I7 920 @ 4Ghz
GPU: GTX 680 – latest drivers
MOBO: Asus P6T
RAM: 9GB DDR3 @ 1600Mhz

so here’s my problem
reinstalled the game several times. now last attempt i installed it to C:\ D:\ being my default gamefiles drive
still the game randomly crashes. at first the virusscanner was the fuckup, then there was another thingy and now it tells me maxpayne3.exe itself sucks c*ck.
going insane here.
specs: amd phenom x6 1100, asus crosshair formula, 8 gigs of ram ocz vertex3 as primary drive, 2 WD EARS 2TB drives for storage
msi 5870 lightning+msi 5850 twinfrozr vid cards in Crossfire
all drivers updated where possible

While I start the game; I press the start button but loading and then it keep loading and did not enter in game main menu.
To those who are stuck on main title with loading only showing, I recently had this but it was nothing to do with DX or any thing else as the night before I had completed my first single player run through, its seems that the rockstar community rubbish doesn’t always auto sign in or even pop up and this will leave you on the main title with loading showing but nothing happening, press home, log in, job done…..
At beggining of chapter 5 when max and his friend (i can’t remember the name XD) are swimming in boat, guy says “Max, are You listening?” and at this moment game freezes. I tried reinstalling it, downloaded newest drivers,updated DirectX, turned off V-Sync and antyaliasing and still i get the freeze everytime at this exact moment. Sometimes when it freezes i press alt+tab and when pop it up back it shows PAUSE and press escape to continue in lower left corner but when press escape nothing happens or PAUSE just disaapears but it’s still frozen.

I’m having this difficulty whereby i installed the game & crack it. But unfortunately when i clicked on PlayMaxPayne3.exe . It stuck on the Loading Screen. Can anyone assist me on this? Is it because i didn’t update my GTX555 driver or i need to sign up for the Rockstar Club?

Max Payne 3 works fine. No lag, nog keyboard problems. But when im at chapter 7 when Max just killed a few guys in a warehouse in favela, he walks true a train and then stands before a door. Everything works fine until i press ‘E’ To begin cutscene. Game freezes and my whole Pc chrashes. What am i supposed to do? Plz react.
hmm.I installed the game , no problem , crack it , ok . then i started the game .. it starts till the big letters MAX PAYNE 3 .. and at the bottom it says loading.. i was taking cigarette hoping that will fix.. and 3/4 mins later. still stucked in there so PLEASE respond and find a fix about this <3

Hey guys recently purchased max payne 3 on steam and all was going perfectly until chapter 5. Just after you examine the helicopter and vault over the wall you are supposed to shoot the padlock on the door to advance however, the padlock simply will not break and the texture on the floor infront of the door is broken. The game crashed in at this point if you press escape or even try to alt tab. Any ideas ? cheers

I have the same issue i read some people above. When the beggining cinematic finish and you need to enter bullet time mode pressing left shift or left mayus, nothing happens. However, the ESC key does work…

I got the same problem as Djentleman. Mouse and keyboard stop responding except for the ESC key. I tried changing key bindings but the only helps temporarily (like 3-4 seconds).
I dont have this problem with any other games…

Hi. Installed fine, starts fine, and it doesnt freeze at all in any cutscene. however, im still stuck on the first mission because when it lets me take control, it says first to pres lshift for slow mo. that works fine. but when it goes to the shootdodge, I jump into the air and land on my belly, and I freeze like that. also, when I go to pick up a gun, the animation is extremely slow. it takes about a minute to pick up the gun, and most of the time it just glitches out and makes my character freeze. FPS is fine the whole way through. any ideas as to why it keeps doing this?

I have the exact same issue. Weird as hell.
Basically picking up stuff, jumping forward, backwards even taking painkillers and a few other situations.
I can best describe it like parts of max payne being slowed down. However you can still turn and shoot at normal rate.
If you use painkillers, only that one arm/animation is slowed down (meaning you can still run and shoot), but if you try to pick up a gun, you’re stuck to the floor. I even had max payne go into some Davinci like pose at one point frozen in space.
I really hope someone finds a solution to this

hi i also have the same problem in chapter 5. Im at the stage where i killed all the baddies by the boat yard and the last two guys in the wooden hut. I died before i killed the last one. Everything going perfectly, my laptop is good no problems with the game. I been playing off line mode no internet all the time as instructed. Crack okay no worries, Then i resarted the same point in chapter five as he walks on the cross path on the river, to start killing spree. Then social club popup came on again and im not even on the internet now i cant even carry on even after installing and uninstalling etc >>>>>>>>>>>???????
