Problem #1 Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (CoD MW3) PC Crash Fix – Crash to Desktop upon Launch / Startup
If you’re game randomly crashes upon launching the game, ensure or try the following:
- Update your nVidia / ATI graphics drivers
- Turn off SLI / Crossfire
- Try using only one GPU first (turn the other one off via your graphics control panel)
- Disable anti-aliasing and filtering
- Disable V-sync
- Disable background apps, and turn off your anti-virus software
- Run through our list of general fixes, which will most likely resolve your problems
Problem #2 Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (CoD MW3) PC Install Error: “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (CoD MW3) PC Install Fails, Cannot Install”
This is a Microsoft C++ bug so the quick fix is to uninstall your C++ files. If you see 2 instances of Microsoft C++, uninstall both of them; and don’t worry, they are easy to reinstall. There are also a couple workarounds online if you don’t want to uninstall them.
Problem #3 Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (CoD MW3) PC “Steam – Error This game is currently unavailable. Please try again at another time.” and ‘Steam Error – 55?
To fix this, simply restart Steam. If that doesn’t fix restarting your PC should do it.
Problem #4 Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (CoD MW3) PC Game Freeze Fix – Game Freezes during the Intro Video
If you’re using Steam, a quick solution is to verify the integrity of your Steam game cache to resolve the problem. If it persists, update ensure that both your graphics drivers and DirectX are updated.
(UPDATE) You can also try the following:
Go to your MW3 installation folder and delete the file called: “ModernWarfare3.bik” as this is the video file that is causing most of the lock up during startups. Pretty straightforward, but this tip has already fixed the problem for many people.

CoD MW3 is crashing during the “hamburg” mission, the error message I receive is “RELIABLE COMMAND BUFFER OVERFLOW”, as I am not a supreme techie I fail to understand this message. If you are going thru the street, that messages sometimes pops up. try to get into some building thru window or something. It will work.

When I enable SLI (multi gpu in mp cfg) my gameplay get extremely laggy. Only in mp, sp is fine.

Same problem as RobM “Reliable command buffer overflow” at Hamburg mission, same point every time.. hope for fast solution… SP is addicting
the onlyvsolution is…. to not go thru the street but inside the bulding. when your near to the spot where the error occurs, look at your right and you will see a building with open walls, go inside it, kill everyone in it and boom. thhats all you have to do. hope this helps. it worked for me100% just reply if it didnt work and ill try to get back
“Reliable command buffer overflow” during Hamburg mission just as you are running down the street with the M1 Abrams. Tried verifying game-cache in Steam, still crashes…..
Found a way to get past it, go through the building on the right with the broken glass, and stay in there until the end of the offices, and it will auto save

That’s not a solution.. that’s a work-a-round.. between, campaign missions that are just copies from previous mw releases, and glaring AI bugs, and the above issue.. I can’t see myself playing this past the end of the campaign just to see story end..

make sure you are online on steam before playing. also try right clicking the app, click troubleshoot compatibility then it will detect issues then click the top option between those two and run it. if it still doesnt work , do not close the troubleshoot tab and click on tha app itself. hope it works !

In multiplayer the graphics is bad, and the settings are at the highest and exactly the same as the singleplayer, in singleplayer it looks fine and in spec ops, could you please help?

MW3 freezes every time when I finished the New York mission (Campaign, single player) every time at the same point.
To be exactly, when leaving stairs in the submarine through the conning tower on the bridge.
Mission objective is already completed, game saved.
But the game just freezes, not errormessage whatsoever.
When I open taskmanager it says the game don’t respond.
When I go back to the game (it was saved though) I return within the submarine, just at the point when the submarine mission starts.
So when I completed it before, says it saves but it didn’t.
Have done it three times all over, but freezes every time at the same point.
Same problem..finish the 1 mission, loading second one and pops up the error screen and asks if i want to send error report. same place every time.
Guys have you tried playing it in windowed mode just for that part? Once loaded, save and resume full screen.
I had encountered an “Error Reliable command buffer overflow” problem in Goalpoint mission.
Solution: I just disabled VSYNC @ video advance settings and it worked without a problem, hope this helps.

downloaded latest graphic driver instaled directx from dvd and it worked. althoughi got run out of memory error and switched textures quality on auto and it helped too im in last mission:)

Modern Warfare 3 crashes just after getting out of the RPG-ed humvee and firing a few shots. My screen goes black and my monitor says “Entering power save mode” and switches off. All sounds stop. I cannot wake it up and I have to shut down the machine.
It does that every single time. Sometimes it does it earlier (when opening door of the humvee) and sometimes 10-20 seconds later.
My monitor is a 30″ Dell and all drivers, DirectX have been updated to the latest versions.
So annoying. It’s been 2 days since I got the game and still not able to play.

I have this same problem … I play Black ops just fine so can’t be hardware related … Sometimes I can play an hour and sometimes just a few minutes before the Entering power save mode kicks in … can’t wake it back up … Have to restart the whole damn computer .. GRR

COD MW3 single player freezes in the mission after praque when just after crawling under pier with captain price and yuri, and placing the C4 under the pier. Just before I try to exit pier I get a black screen garbled sound. It happened three times in exactly the same place and on the third time the crash WIPED my harddrive and I have had to format my HD and reinstall windows XP (I presume when the system crashed it may have written garbage onto the harddrive header or something?). Anyone else get the crash in the same place? Any solutions? Please!

i am encountering a crash at the Start of “Turbulence” Mission i.e After Yuri falls down to the falls and Soap mentions about who’s Yuri . When the cutscene occurs , Price just says “Truth is the first casualty of war” and the progress bar is about 5-10% which is when i encounter a crash .

i got exactly the same problem. i have x 32bit and nvidia 8600M GT with the latest drivers. I think that this is not a problem with video movie, because i tried to delete it and it still crashes when reached 10 – 15% loading bar. Also tried old drivers but still no result. Same here, the rest of the missions work just fine but when this maps starts (loading is completed). It switched between windows and black screen(total black and normal black) and then when i do ctrl shift esc and end process it says nvidea driver crashed and has succesfully recoverd. Ps Multiplayer works fine.

I’ve noticed that sometimes the game freezes in the main menu for a few seconds (15 seconds +/-).
I mean, the game is still working and i can see something changing (when searching for a match i still see it searching top-right) but i can’t move the mouse and/or pop-up friends/game summary with my keyboard.

I think I’m having a very similar issue to this. Mine is happening when joining lobbies. I think it happens when I become host (core i7/8gb of ram, and fios). When I become host in a lobby the whole game will freeze up like you mentioned, I can still move the mouse but the game locks up for 15seconds +/-, I’ve also noticed Skype locks up at this time too and returns a few seconds before the game unfreezes itself.
Are you using Skype too? Are any other services crashing and locking up? I might try a game without skype to see if its conflicting.
Im getting a problem when Im trying to save it. I played and finished the mission 5 and crossed missions 6,7. After that I saved and quit the game and exited to desktop. And then when next time I started and resumed the game, I found the game is loading from mission 5. Then again I played mission 5,6,7 and saved & quit. But when Im starting cod mw3 & resuming, again its loading from mission 5. And this happened repeatedly. Plz help!!

1- Close all programs and especially your antivirus
2- make sure that you have enough free space at lease 13 GB
3- run setup.exe browse for dvd2 when asks
4- Important when the command line window ( black screen ) appears don’t close it (again don’t close it) it will close by it self when it done and don’t click next just leave it to the end
5- then make sure that game size after install is 11.2 GB
6- run the game

The solution is not to go along the street but jump inside the bulding with broken windows on the right. There will be several enemies there, you will kill them, exit the building on the other side and the checkpoint will save. Going along the street in the open causes this glitch

Hello, I have played the game for 2 days long shift the graphics were realy good no problems running 1600-1200 then i joined a game and the writing and names extra were find but the graphics and textures are crap looks like its running at 800-600 but its not i have re-installed games graphics card drivers then i did a 3DMark05 test and every thing is fine just for some reson every time i join a game now it looks pixalated and crap. please help P.s ps crafics card is 6 days old brand new and same goes for alot of other stuff in my computer its a new rig!
you should find r_imagequality on the config.cfg at the players2 folder then change the r_imagequality number between 1 to 4

i have something realy weird, (i play on pc)
when i played mw3 for the first time it went fine, no problems.
now if i put the resolution on 1600×900 it just crashes, but at first it ran fine on that ressolution.
at first it only did that on multiplayer but now it also does it on singleplayer.
what happends exacly is;
i get a black screen and when i alt-tab out and back in it just shows me a screenshot of what i am suppose to see at that exact momment and then it stays frozen.

Playing single player on PC getting awful lag and freezes. Has an NVIDIA GE Force 9200 GE and plenty of memory etc. Its really bugging me now. Any ideas?

I need help. I’m running COD MW3 on an ASUS M4A78T-E mobo with an X1950 video card with Win7. I’ve vollowed all the instructions about installing the vista (yeuch) drivers and changing the screen resolution to 1024×768, but I constantly get garbage and garbled text for all the setup and selection screens. During game play, all instructions print ok, but I can not make anything out of the menu screens. What would you recommend? Now video card? if so what… within cost reason of course.

Can someone explain to me in detail of the solution as I am quite a dinosaur with computers.
My issue is that, whenever I pay Modern Warfare 3 Single Player, the campaign, abt 40 mins to and hour or so, the game just “hangs”. As in, the game just stops working and my whole laptop just stucks, as in I press anything on the keyboard o mouse, including the Ctrl+Alt+Del or even Alt+F4 or Alt+Tab.
There’s no issue in playing multiplayer or even the Special Ops single missions or the survival mode. can play for more than 12 hours without a glitch.
Only happens in the campaign section. Please help
Problem solved. I re-installed the Direct X and this time, my MP and Speicla Ops “hangs” after an our of play. So, I checked more forums for solutions.
This one forum stated (can’t remember the site) If u are using the Radeon 5800 series 3D card, you should uninstall the Catalyst Control Centre as it is conflicting with something something (told you all that I am a computer dinosaur). Anyway, so I did, and voila, no issues of freezing up after more than 40 mins of gameplay in Special Op, Campaign or even Multiplayer (touchwood / knock on wood)
problem: the game was running fine till i started the “mind the gap” mission. whenever my player died, the game gave this error:

Now whenever i resume the game, this error pops and stops the game.

Game works fantastic until the end of the “mind the gap” mission when after the train derails when you get up there’s a movie section when i get black screen and takes me out to desktop without any error messagee at all.
Tried and installed the game on another computer – same thing happened in the exactly same spot.

Thanks for compiling such a good list of PC Cod MW3 errors. I have tried almost all of your steps but am still encountering a very frustrating “Disk read error” on startup.
The VERY first time I ran the game, I saw about 2 seconds of the opening video and then the game black screened, after a few minutes I Ctrl-Alt-Del and saw the error message when back to the desktop: Disk read error. Now I don’t even get the video for any length of time. I’ve of course tried rebooting and have updated to latest version via steam (that was over a GB of downloads).
I’ve updated my GFX card drivers, updated Direct X, turned off my Avast AV, turned off Crossfire, turned off the cloud sync thing. I’m a bit embarrassed but I can’t find the install dir to delete “ModernWarfare3.bik” – I tried searching for it but no results.
I’m running:
Windows 7 64bit
Intel i5 @ 2.66Ghz
6GB RAM
Dual Radeon HD 5770 850MHZ 1GB in Crossfire
Dual Screens using HDMI cables
I would simply return the game, but I bought in when back in Canada for a vacation, and now am back in the Middle East, so a trip to Best Buy to exchange the disks is not on the cards for me.

If you get a disk read error, and you do not want to upgrade your computer like Frank says, just download a savegame with all missions completed, and try to start the mission after the mission where it crashes. Worked for me! You can look up the skipped mission on youtube.

Yeah, I have a problem too. In certain points, the game acts nuts and doesn’t display the textures right (or doesn’t display them at all). So it can happen that soldiers remain headless, the ground or buildings aren’t rendered, etc. The funny thing is that it only happens in specific missions, on VERY specific places. For example, in the Bag And Drag mission, after we land the chopper or as we enter the catacombs. To be worse, some mission don’t display anything at all. The Blood Brothers mission (Iron Lady aswell), for instance, loads but the screen is completely black, and the subtitle text is blurry. Generally, the game runs totally smooth, and I’m exceeding the requirements for a descent notch. If anyone can help, or is encountering the same problem, please let me know. PS: Yes, I updated DirectX and my display driver, didn’t help…

I’m going to try this back for the last aggravating time—-Solution for Couldn’t load image ‘xp
1- Close all programs and especially your antivirus
2- make sure that you have enough free space at lease 13 GB
3- run setup.exe browse for dvd2 when asks
4- Important when the command line window ( black screen ) appears don’t close it (again don’t close it) it will close by it self when it done and don’t click next just leave it to the end
5- then make sure that game size after install is 11.2 GB
6- run the game
if it doesnt work im selling this stupid game and buy hitman.lol..serious

to solve the problem “COULD NOT LOAD IMAGE XP” try changing the language, they must first see the language in which you have within the zone folder (I have it in spanish weighs more than 4GB that folder), copy the language (in spanish my case) and stick it in the following files where you installed the game: language.txt, localization.txt (up and replace what he said) and finally in 3DMGAME.INI (for this you need to edit and right click where it says language = (replaced here by your language) and give the store) and this would have to solve the problem. Good luck and hope they work.

My problem is after I have played a few matches online, mw3 starts to skip frames, freezes for half a second and then again for half a second and then continue and then freeze again and keeps going like this, The sound starts to BRRRRRRR, BRooorrrrr, urrrrrrr, and my only solution is to restart the game, but ain’t there a better way to do this? or is there a fix?

My problem is saved games in single player mode. first at 10%, resume game was blanked out, had to start again. Now at 22.2% same thing. It shows up as 22% in the main menu, but I can’t click resume……and I’m stuffed if I want to start again to have it happen once again somewhere down the track!
My problem is a little bit… weird.
First off: I played EVERY Call of Duty online and offline with no problems at all.
But now whenever I try joining a buddy in Multiplayer or a buddy joins me, my game simply crashes.
I have played through Singleplayer and I can join games in progress, but not my friends’ party.

After installation, during the first start I got into the main menu when crashed. An error said: could not load weapon.fad. When started off again it crashed even before and said: could not load gs_sp.color..
Support says I should try to reinstall DirectX. Did not help.

“iw5sp.exe has stopped working” the super frustrating error I always encounter, at first it started crashing during the loading cut scene before the first campaign mission starts, now it’s happening before the mission starts where you chase volk. Hey guys, my problem is less serious but still very much annoying me. In MP or SP every ten mins or so the game freezes for around 20 seconds or less and switches from game to desktop very briefly and then back to the game and all is fine again for 10 mins to 25 mins each time. Only happens on this one game, and doesnt make a diff which level or mission im on, Its not so bad in SP but in MP i come back to being dead or if im very very lucky im still alive

para solucionar el problema “COULD NOT LOAD IMAGE XP” prueben cambiando el idioma, primero tienen que ver en que idioma lo tienes dentro de la carpeta zone (yo lo tengo en spanish pesa mas de 4gb esa carpeta), copian el idioma (spanish en mi caso) y lo pegan en los siguientes archivos donde se instalo el juego: language.txt, localization.txt (arriba y reemplazan lo que decia) y por ultimo en 3DMGAME.INI (para este tiene que hacer click derecho editar y donde dice language=(reemplazar aca por su idioma) y darle a guardar) y con esto se tendria que solucionar el problema. Suerte y ojala que les funcione.
A si quieren hagan un backup de esos archivos antes por las dudas.

Hey crashfixes, I think I may be getting a problem like one listed on the great list you guys made.
Here’s the issue, often times when I go into the Create-A-Class (Multi-player) menu, my computer crashes. I have to hold down the power/on button for 5 seconds to turn off, then restart as normal (I am a laptop user). This also rarely happens in Special Operations (Spec Ops) as well. I also get a very strange buzzing sort of noise when this happens (I use headphones) and it is not only annoying, but also loud.
When it happens in the CAC menu, I can sometimes get my classes changed (I often leave CAC then get back into CAC to avoid the issue), sometimes I get 1-2 minutes in CAC before crash, other times like today I got 5 seconds before crash. I run the game on medium graphical settings so I get better FPS.

I run the game via Steam remote-launch (this issue seems to happen more when I run the game disc-less).
All in all, this isn’t a really bad issue as it is annoying. Thanks for the help. I have provided as much information as I can. I can get more detailed game specs if needed.

Ok on mw3 i all have all my settings on lowest possible and my desktop aswell which is [windows 7] and I played mw3 since it came out untill a month ago I started getting this really bad lag i’ll explain it the best I can and also I can’t find any help for it at all—– Ok so i’ll go to a random game in multiplayer on mw3 and every thing and it works just fine no lag at all…. and then all the sudden my fps drop really bad like I have to exit… the game to move my mouse again….and it happens every single game I join it might have like 3-4 minutes in the gameplay and it never fails to happen, i did a full system restore…. re-installed mw3 multiple times aswell… I sware this is bs the game worked fine for months…. and this is just so annoying because I can’t find help at all :[ my email is Chance_gabbey@yahoo.com if anyone can help me find a fix i’ll be willing to spend $20-50 usd through paypal…. The solution is not to go along the street but jump inside the building with broken windows on the right. There will be several enemies there, you will kill them, exit the building on the other side and the checkpoint will save. Going along the street in the open causes this glitch.

When playing spec-ops most of the textures are just black and my game becomes really laggy ~3fps :/
when i try to open cod mw3 by clicking iw5sp in steam. It shows a msg, ”some detailed information on iw5sp is unavailable because it is a non-steam mod or shortcut. Steam will still manage launching the game for you and in most cases the in-game overlay will be available cod mw3”. And then a fatal error occur as, ‘steam must be running to play this game’. Pls someone help me to fix this.
I’m having an issue with my MW3 and Steam doesn’t seem to be able to even READ so I’m here, perhaps there is a computer saavy person out there that can solve this problem. First, my system specs:
1200W power supply (Silent Pro Gold)
8 core proccessor @3.1GHz AMD (black FX I think is the name)
16 GB DDR3 Corsair RAM
ATI Radeon HD 6900 display adapter
Windows 7 64 bit home premium OS
All current updates as of May 1, 2012
Internet connection is through Comcast and is: 25mb down/ 5mb up speeds. Checked to verify connection speeds and all hardware drivers are up to date as of May 1, 2012.
The issue: MW3 was working fine for about a month after my last hardware upgrade. Went to play the game after being off for a few days and Steam downloaded an “update”. After this update, launching the game takes about 2 minutes to reach the multi player menu screen. After joining a game the map load screen AND then loading takes about 4 minutes (averages). Once in a game, it runs very choppy and unplayable, unable to aim, etc. I contacted both Steam and Activition tech support and they just refer me to the other over and over. Every other game I play (SCII, nostale, diablo 3 beta, blood bowl legendary edition, etc) all run perfectly fine. I use ESET Smart Security and all games have all access. All hardware reads in the green and has zero viruses, infections or problems. I have tried everything I can think of, consulted both Activision and Steam FAQ forums, live support, etc and have changed nothing. Again, I think this is a software issue from Steam (update/patch/etc) that isn’t compatable with my set up. ANYONE can email me in attempt to solve this issue. Look buddy, I l know what you’re going through, I’ve tried contacting them too, no use. The steam updates have also messed up my game. Since all the new DLC is out, they got a couple of updates. I suggest using forums, that way you can get other people to help than just the lazy people on the support pages.

Hi, please help! I used to run the game fine but now when I start a multiplayer match, its gets little stutters and then when I die, and I see my character falling, it freezes and says “iw5sp encountered a serious problem and the application needs to shut done”, something along those lines. Please help, any answer would be greatly appreciated! (and I own the steam version)
4 days ago I stupidly installed the STEAM driver update, since then my graphics have failed (worked perfectly before) I am running windows 7, 32 bit, ati graphics, I have updated my driver from the ati site, game just getting worse, please help!!!
cod mw3 freezes in betwwen when i am playing
Had no troubles with the game until about 2 weeks ago and now when im on any sort of loading screen for multiplayer, being survival, missions or online multiplayer matches the game wont load and freezes and stops responding, after about 5 mins of being frozen it takes forever to load, then black screens and takes me back to a lobby and says “Lost connection with other Special Ops player” or something similar for multiplayer.
I’ve tryed everything I can think of to fix it, even reinstalling the game. Any suggestions would be greatly apreciated.
When I try to run either single or multiplayer, my computer completely crashes. It literally restarts my computer. This is definitely not because of hardware problems because my brother and I both built the same PC’s with exactly the same hardware. What do I do?
Well, I’ve been seeing that none of these questions have been answered so I wouldn’t look for help here as I did. I strongly suggest contacting Activision, posting in the MW3 forums, or if you own the game over Steam, send them an email. The basic stuff I would try is reinstalling the game, reinstalling directX or .NET software. Do you get any errors, or does the computer only shutdown just like that? Update you’re drivers too, if they aren’t up to date already.

Hey, I keep getting an error at start up with DirectX error saying it has encountered an unrecoverable error; check readme for possible solutions.
I have reinstalled DirectX with the newest version and it still won’t work.
I don’t know if this has anything to do with it but after I backed out of COD the last time I played my screen reset itself (the desktop) and made everything HUGE, I have changed my resolution and some of the items are still larger than they should be (“splendid utility” and my RAM meter; splendid utility is from ASUS ((I think? I have had it for awhile)) and changes how my screen colors things just so you know if you don’t already).

This problem is really CRAZY and I can’t figure it out at all. OK, when I’m playing multiplayer online I can play just fine for the first few games, then, after that suddenly whenever I try to make my man RUN, it just keeps diving back down to the ground! I can WALK.. but whenever I try to RUN.. my man will just go a few steps and then keeps diving back onto the ground and then I’m just crawling around and easily getting killed! So very ANNOYING!!
My second problem is.. also during multiplayer.. whereby at anytime the game screen will suddenly just pop down (minimize) and then I’m looking at my desktop screen. Then, I have to click on the game icon (bottom of page) and then wait several seconds for the game to appear again (same game but of course I get killed because just sitting there doing nothing during this time).
Has anyone ever experienced these kinds of MW3 multiplayer problems before? I’m using my PC.. with Windows 7.

HI, i was not playing mw3 for 2weeks and now when i try do so it just doesnt work like it suppose to. Most of the times if freezes when push anything ingame, sometimes im connecting (mp) but it takes like 15min to load and after i have like 3-5 fps, drivers if fine, i did that thingy witch catche in steam,reinstaled game several times.
