This post covers a comprehensive solution to Terraria crash errors. I was curious about this new game Terraria Online, whose players claimed that this game rivals or is even better than Minecraft. On this premise I purchased the game for a good 10 bucks, and that sure was 10 bucks well-spent! This game sure got me hooked.
I ran into some annoying crashes and connection errors when I started playing Terraria Online, so here’s a compiled hot fix list to help those who are having the same problems.
Terraria Crash Fix and Solutions for multiplayer and other errors:
Problem #1: Terraria Crash – Terraria Online Multiplayer server crashes because of Beds
Possible Solution: Follow these steps:
- First go in your documents folder then /mygames/terraria/worlds/
- Do a backup of your files ( put them in a new folder on your desktop for example )
- Ask your friend (server host) to give you his worlds files. (Be sure these are the right files, world1 = world in first slot, world2 = world in second slot etc.)
- Put them in /mygames/terraria/worlds/ , start the game, solo mode, your char and world, go save anywhere else. quit game.
- Delete the files in your worlds folder, put your original files back in.
- Start game, join server, and enjoy.
Doing this helps reduce Terraria Crash incidents for the PC.
Problem #2: Terraria Crash to Desktop before world selection
Possible Solution #1: Delete your Terraria config file
Possible Solution #2: Verifying the integrity of the game cache
Possible Solution #3: Check for corrupt world files and delete it. Make sure you backup your .bak file.
Problem #3: Terraria Crash – Game crashes when 2000+ feet from other players on Large World
Possible Solution: This is a well known Terraria crash and the developers are working to get a patch out to address this asap.
Problem #4: Terraria Crash Problems and Errors when joining Servers
Possible Solution: According to the Terraria Online forums, the only way to fix this is to change your display language to English.
Note for Windows 7 users:
It will only work if you have the Entreprise Edition or the Ultimate Edition. If so, you can try Vistalizator.
Second note for Windows 7 users under Service Pack 1:
You must run Vistalizator in compatibility mode (right click on Vistalizator, properties, compatibility tab, check “run this program in compatibility mode for” and then select Windows 7. Don’t forget to select Express mode before installing the language pack. There may be some errors while changing to English but no worries, it still works and won’t hurt your computer.
Doing this helps reduce Terraria Crash incidents for the PC.
Problem #5: Terraria crashes, crash to desktop in Menu Settings
Possible Solution #1: Try lowering your screen resolution.
Possible Solution #2: Try Alt+Enter instead of using fullscreen in the options
Possible Solution #3: Make sure you have the latest version .net framework and xna framework. You can download them here respectively:
- http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?familyid=a88c6dec-aeae-42cd-a108-d35c013c3b97
Doing this helps reduce Terraria Crash incidents in Menu Settings for the PC.
Problem #6: Terraria Crash – Exiting Terraria menu settings screen crashes the game due to the error “Unhandled System.IO.DirectoryNotFoundException” and points to config.dat
Possible Solution #1: Create the My Games\Terraria\ folder manually
Possible Solution #2: Create a character and a world and save and exit and the game will create the My games\ Terraria \ folder
This fixes can greatly improve Terraria performance and reduce Terraria Crash errors.
Problem #7: Terraria Crash to Desktop, Blackscreen upon launching the game; Launcher errors
Possible Solution #1: Do not start the Game from the Steam Launcher, go to the folder in steam and start the game (The launcher/steam messes it up when launching the game)
Possible Solution #2: Try solution #1 above but run the .exe as administrator. Doing this helps reduce Terraria Crash incidents for the PC.
Problem #8: Terraria Crash – Terraria Can’t Connect or Host Servers; socket Address error
Possible Solution #1: Try port forwarding port 31337. Make sure you are typing in the Hamachi IP, not their External IP. If you want to connect to your own server, type in your computer’s internal IP.
Possible Solution #2: When you try host a server a windows firewall message should pop up in the backround. Try minimizing and clicked allow or unblock if you’re using XP.
Possible Solution #3: Disable all extra network adapters aside from your actual adapter. (VMware, Hamachi, etc.) Once I disabled these I was able to connect by joining my LAN IP, and my friend (USA, I’m Europe) was able to connect as well.

This can be found under Control panel -> Network and Internet -> Change Adapter Settings
Problem #9: Terraria Crash – World Crash when digging near water, with error “System.IndexOutOfRangeException”
Possible Solution: This is a well known crash and the developers are working to get a patch out to address this asap.
Problem #10: Terraria Crash – Stuck in error “Receiveing Tile Data” when playing with other friends / players
Possible Solution #1: Windows Firewall or other anti-virus programs may be blocking the server. Disable them but be sure to turn them back on after playing.
Possible Solution #2: Try generating a new world, and then running the server on that world.
Possible Solution #3: Make sure that the other players have purchased legitimate multiple copies of Terraria on that account, otherwise the server will reject any players on that same Steam account because there are two instances of Terraria running, but only one purchased.
