Fixing Shogun 2: Total War Crashes, Freezes and Errors

Fixing Shogun 2: Total War Crashes, Freezes and Errors

It sure took quite some time after the original Shogun Total War before this sequel was released, and I’m pretty happy with it as BIG fan of the Total War series (my favorite is still MTW!). I encountered crashes though, which is not unusual for the TW games, so here’s a hotfix list to help you out.

Please comment if you encounter issues not covered here so I can try to help.

Possible Solution #1: Reinstall the Game and Steam

To fix the game crash, reinstall both the game and the Steam. To do so, click Start | Control Panel | Programs | Uninstall a Program.

Possible Solution #2: Fix Incorrect Registry Configurations

This game stores its configurations and user statistics into the registry. Closing the game accidentally may result in crash due to incorrect or missing information. That is why you need to verify all these information and fix it as per the needs and requirements.

There are two options for you- Modify the registry manually, or otherwise, using a Registry Cleaner. Use a globally recognised and reputed Registry Cleaner and PC Optimizer.

Possible Solution #3: Update your Drivers

Update your drivers for fixing game crashes. Visit the websites of the graphics card and sound card manufacturers and search for the latest version of an appropriate driver by your serial/ model number.

Possible Solution #4: Change CPU Affinity

For the multi-core users, make sure that the CPU Affinity is set to both CPU 0 and CPU 1. It will better utilize the different cores and fix Shogun 2: Total War crash.

1. Minimize the game temporarily.
2. Press Ctrl + Alt + Delete.
3. Select Start Task Manager.
4. Click Processes tab.
5. Right click the game and select Set Affinity.
6. Mark both the checkboxes (CPU 0 and CPU 1) as checked.
7. Click OK. Close Task Manager.

Possible Solution #5: Set Higher Priority to the Game

Setting up the higher priority may solve the issue. Do below steps for doing so:

1. Minimize the game temporarily.

2. Press Ctrl + Alt + Delete.
3. Select Start Task Manager.
4. Click Processes tab.
5. Right click the game and select Set Priority | High.

Possible Solution #6: Reinstall DirectX

Shogun 2: Total War requires the latest Microsoft DirectX to be installed for functioning properly. Corrupted installation of DirectX may cause Shogun 2: Total War crash. Reinstall the DirectX by downloading its setup from Microsoft website.

Possible Solution #7: Verify the Integrity of the Game Cache

Using Steam, verify the game cache for missing or corrupted files. This may help fixing Shogun 2: Total War crash.

1. Close the game.
2. Open Steam.
3. Right click the game Shogun 2: Total War from My Games tab.
4. Select Properties option.
5. Click Local Files tab.
6. Click the button Verify Integrity of Game Cache to start the process.

More Possible Problems and Solutions:

1# Crash on Loading Screen

The game freezes and then crashes at loading screen though it doesn’t happen every time but its frequent enough to be annoying.

2# Shogun 2 – Crash After Clicking Enemy Army

Move closer so the army isn’t on the edge of your Field Of View, then try it. Or wait for another turn and then attack the settlement directly, this would resolve the issue. Wait for patch if these two workarounds don’t work for you.

3# Can’t Launch Shogun 2

If you are unable to launch Shogun 2, make sure your system drivers are updated and double check that game files have been downloaded correctly by verifying the integrity of the files.

4# Siege Battle AI Problems

The AI seems to currently be struggling a little when there are reinforcements in Siege battles. Needs Patch!

5# Shogun 2 – Crash to Desktop When Clicking on enemy Castle

Refer to #2. It is similar issue.

6# Crash to Desktop After Clicking My Turn

If you come across this error, it is a random crash may or may not be associated with the game. Make sure your system drivers are update. Do check #2 and every other Crash post in this article.

7# Blue Screen at Start Up

Normally Blue Screen of Death is mostly caused by a software issue. Some corrupted driver installation or minimum memory required to play the game exceeds your current physical memory. Make sure you meet the minimum requirements, and have good working drivers installed.

8# Shogun 2 – Appcrash after launching game (GAME Load CRASH 1)

Try reinstalling and checking the games cache. Its possible that your initial install or download was corrupted or interrupted by a system process, virus, or other software problems.

9# Shogun 2 – Crash at Logo Screen

Make sure you meet the minimum requirements to run the game or you will come across all these random crashes while launching Shogun 2.

10# Low Graphics At Ultra Settings ?

Just wait as the developer release the patch which will fix all these issues.

11# Shogun 2 – Black Sky and No Water Bug

No Water and Black Sky during Naval Battle ? – It seems this issue is associated with people who have ATI graphics card and the latest drivers are the reason for this issue. At this point in time it appears that actually rolling back your driver a version fixes the issue.

12# Shogun 2 – Map Movements are Slow

Make sure you have updated your graphics card drivers and DirectX or you will face slow map movement or even lag during gameplay.

13# Shogun 2 – Small Interface Font – Small Text

Try changing resolution and see if that helps. No real fix yet but that may solve the issue for now.

14# Shogun 2 – No Sound

Make sure you have selected stereo output if you are using headphones or you may not hear any sound at all.

15# How do I Unlock DLC?

1. Open the steam account, click on “my games” tab.

2. Click “Activate a product on steam” button.

3. Now a window will popup, keep pressing the next button until you get the option to input a code.

4. Enter your respective code and click next. You should get a confirmation screen.

5. Launch the game and DLC will be unlocked.

16# How do I reset my graphical preference?

For Windows Vista/7

1. Click on start and open the search or type %appdata%\The Creative Assembly\Shogun2\scriptsin the search bar.

2. You will find a preference file, just delete it and the graphics will be reset.

For Windows XP

1. Go to start and click on Run, Type in the following%appdata%\The Creative Assembly\Shogun2\scriptsand press enter.

2. You will find a preference file, just delete it and the graphics will be reset.

17# No Sound With TeamSpeak Running

Make sure you have the latest version of TS3 from teamspeak.com and you have installed the latest audio drivers. Try another Capture mode under Settings > Option > Capture(TeamSpeak).

18# Units Cut in Half When I Zoom in.

This is neither a glitch nor a problem. This only occurs when you zoom-in a lot, this is normal and you should just zoom out a little bit.

19# Strange Graphics – Weird Colors on Landscape

Open NVIDIA control panel and turn off the multi monitors setting.

Where to Find The Save Files – Shogun 2

C:\Users\[Username]\AppData\Roaming\The Creative Assembly\Shogun2

20# Shogun 2 – Crash on Loading – Crash to Desktop

You start the game, the game loads and takes you to the trademark screen but stuck there. You may have version conflict. Right click on Shogun 2 game in your game library, options, change game language to English, it will download few files and work fine afterward.

21# Shogun 2 – Crash to Desktop – Splash Screen

Make sure you have English version of the game as due to some version conflict the game crashes at start. Right click on Shogun 2 game in your game library, options, change game language to English, it will download few files and work fine afterward.

22# Shogun 2 – Failed to Launch

Again the reason behind is the version conflict. Refer to #6 and #7.

23# Shogun 2 has Stopped Working

If you encounter this error, verify the integrity of the game files.

24# Shogun 2 – No Anti Aliasing

It will come with DirectX 11 patch, the demo had it so there is no reason they excluded it from the full game. It’s just they are working on the performance of the graphic cards and the patch to resolve all this will be out in a week or so.

25# No Sound and Slow Gameplay

Install or Update your video card drivers and DirectX.

I am stuck at this problem, too. It seems that the game can’t start turn # 110. The game runs fine with max grafics and all without laging or slowing down, but when turn # 110 should begin the game crashes.

    hello,
the game crashed after the yellow trademark logo appears. It says “Error cant find keyword version, bla3..” Can anyone help me? i didn’t use steam, i just bought the game, yes the pirate one. So there’s no verify game cache or whatsoever.

I got the game right at launch, and also played the demo, and first no problems! Awesome game!! But now Im having a different crash, that just started recently.

When in battle, and I try to group my units when in play, it crashes straight to desktop with no explonation of the error. Works fine until i group though. No matter if I got high or low graphics-settings. Dont know much about graphics though, but I know my cpu should be able to handle the game good, also because it used to!

Ive got all the latest drivers, and the card is a ATI Radeon HD 5700.

I have a suspicion though, because it used to work fine until I changed a little in Catalyst, in Antistropic Filtering and Anti-Aliasing. But this resulted in another problem, the graphics became buggy (in battle i couldnet see the yellow lininings around the units, and i campaign I couldnt see the yellow move.area for naval units). So I changed Catalyst back by going to Default Factory-preferences, and that solved the problem.

But somehow it also created this crash-when-group issue, and I have no idea how to fix it! I have like 20 games currently installed in steam, so uninstalling steam is like my last resort :p

Anyone have a clue how to help me? Would be much appreciated! :)

I have MSI GTX 260 Twin Frozr OC in SLI and my problem was the nvidia 270.** drivers were crashing, I downloaded the MSI 258.** drivers and it worked for me, might just be an MSI thing I don’t know, but now the game is flawless

    Intel Core2Quad Q8200 2.3GHz
    4GM DDR2 RAM

The game doesn’t even go beyond the initial splash page; it just crashes within a minute.
