Portal 2 Crash Fix and Fixes to Portal 2 Crashes, Crash Errors

Welcome to my fix guide for Portal 2 crash errors. I’m sure you’ve been waiting as much or even more as I was for Portal 2! We’ve been itching to do some neat teleporting tricks again, and finally the game is here to satisfy our gaming hunger. Too bad it’s as glitchy as most modern games, especially those on Steam. So, I compiled which I pretty much think is the definitive hotfix list for those of you having a hard time with those game-breaking crashes.

Make sure you read it through! If there are errors or problems not covered here, please let me know in the comments section and I’ll try to help you. You can also give your comments to help others out!

Fix Portal 2 Crash errors, Fixes Blackscreen and Crash to Desktop, other game fixes:

Problem 1# Portal 2 Crash to Desktop (CTD) Fix and Fixes to Constant Crashing and Blackscreen

Possible Solution:

  • Go to your windows folder (usually c:/windows/)
  • Inside there, go to the CSC folder.
  • Try to open the folder and it should fail (if it doesn’t, you have a different problem). It’ll come up with ‘You don’t currently have permission to access this folder’ at which time you keep pressing continue until it says you’ve been denied.
  • Right-click the folder, go to properties.
  • Go to the security tab at which point it’ll say ‘To continue, you must be an administrative user with permission to view this object’s security properties’ at which point you click continue.
  • Click on admin in the owner tab which will swap the owner to the administrator then click OK.
  • You then click on OK once again which will bring up the security tab.
  • Tick ‘full control’, press OK twice to get out of the properties tabs.
  • Run the game as administrator.

Problem 2# Portal 2 Crash – Constant crashing or blackscreen alternative fixes

Possible Alternate Solution #1: Navigate to:

  • 32bit – C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\portal 2
  • 64bit – C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\portal 2
  • Right click on Portal 2.exe and select “Run as Administrator”.

Possible Alternate Solution #2: Run the game in compatibility with Windows XP SP3. Doing this helps prevent Portal 2 crash incidents on the PC.

Problem 3# Portal 2 Crash – Immediate blackscreen upon launching the game

Possible Solution #1: Try different resolution options on your PC.

Possible Solution #2: For nVidia users, go into nVidia control panel and add Portal 2.exe and make it “use nVidia GPU” to resolve this issue. Doing this helps prevent Portal 2 crash incidents on the PC.

Problem 4# Portal 2 Crash – Blackscreen or Crashes right after the loading screen

Possible Solution #1: Disable or turn off your antivirus programs. Be sure to turn them back on after playing.

Possible Solution #2: Try validating the steam files in case the installation is corrupted.

Possible Solution #3: Manually add Portal 2 to your antivirus or firewall exceptions list.

Problem 5# Portal 2 No Sound, Sound problems, Sound stuttering

Possible Solution #1: Run the game with Stereo Sound if you are experiencing no sound or sound stuttering.

Possible Solution #2: If you’re using Realtek audio drivers, updating to the latest available drivers usually solves the problem.

Problem 6# Portal 2 Crash alert: Visual 2005 Run Time Error

Possible Solution: Install Microsoft Visual Runtime Libraries to fix this problem. Doing this helps prevent Portal 2 crash incidents on the PC.

Problem 7# Portal 2 alert: Failed to create D3D device” Error

Possible Solution #1: Install or Update DirectX to the latest version. This is usually encountered if you didn’t install the bundled DirectX drivers when you installed the game. Doing this helps prevent Portal 2 crash incidents on the PC.

Possible Solution #2: Update your video card drivers to the latest version fix this issue. Get the latest drivers from the nVidia/ATI/IntelHD official download sites, and try installing their Beta drivers too. Often that works.

Possible Solution #3:

This error commonly occurs with only the following ATI graphics cards:

  • Radeon X300
  • Radeon X700
  • Radeon X800
  • Radeon 9###

Before updating your drivers, please visit Windows Update and make sure that you have all of the critical updates and the .NET framework installed.

If you get a Failed to create D3D device error and are using any of the above ATI Cards, please update your drivers to the latest version of Catalyst by visiting the ATI driver page.

If you use a Nvidia or any other type of video card, please visit the manufacturer’s website for the latest video card drivers.

If the crash persists, set the following launch option:

  • Go to Steam’s Library.
  • Right-click on the affected game.
  • Go to Properties > General > Set launch options…
  • Type in -dxlevel 80.
  • Click OK.

Doing this helps prevent Portal 2 crash incidents on the PC.

Problem 8# Portal 2 Crash – Randomly crashing to desktop, blackscreen or bluescreen errors

Possible Solution #1: Try different resolution options on your PC.

Possible Solution #2: For nVidia users, go into nVidia control panel and add Portal 2.exe and make it “use nVidia GPU” to resolve this issue.

Possible Solution #3: (thanks to Endless Urbia) For nVidia users, go to nVidia control panel and check if Portal 2.exe has to instances. If there are two instances, set both to use your specific GPU instead of automatic.

Problem 9# Portal 2 Crashes, Freezes, or Blackscreen After Logo Intro Video

Possible Solution #1: Launch the game with -Novid added to launch options of Steam.

Possible Solution #2: You may encountered this if you installed portal on an external hard drive. If so, copy Steam.exe and Portal 2 files from your external hard drive to C:\. Launch Steam.exe as administrator and let it update.

Possible Solution #3: Verify the game cache for errors. If there are corrupted files, try reinstalling the game. Doing this helps prevent Portal 2 crash incidents on the PC.

Possible Solution #4: Disable or turn off your antivirus programs. Be sure to turn them back on after playing.

Possible Solution #5: Manually add Portal 2 to your antivirus or firewall exceptions list.

Possible Solution #6:

  • Exit steam completely
  • Create new folder in drive where steam is installed
  • Copy steam folder to new folder
  • Control panel -> uninstall program
  • Uninstall steam
  • Download steam from steampowered.com
  • Install steam to standard install directory (c:\prog files(x86)\steam or whatever it is)
  • Log in to steam
  • Double click on steam program, wait for download to begin
  • After 10-30 seconds, pause download and exit steam completely
  • Copy steam\steamapps\common\portal 2 to the new \common\portal folder. overwrite all (this will take 7-10 min depending on drive speed, it’s 13gb)
  • When transfer is complete, load steam
  • Click on portal 2, let it “download”. steam will check the existing files
  • Launch Portal 2.

Possible Solution #7: There could be corrupted dll files. Navigate to \Steam\steamapps\common\portal 2\portal2\bin, then either delete everything in that folder or rename it to bin_old. After that Verify your game cache and it should re-download the dll’s. Doing this helps prevent Portal 2 crash incidents on the PC.

Possible Solution #8: Similar to solution above, but a different technique: Delete all the files in both ..steamapps\common\portal 2\portal2\bin and \steamapps\common\portal 2\bin then verify cache.

Problem 10# Portal 2 Crash error: “Could not Load Library Client.”

Possible Solution #1: Make sure there is no application conflicting with Steam and Portal 2. Turn off all other applications and try relaunching Portal 2.

Possible Solution #2: Add Steam and Portal 2 exe’s to firewall exception lists and run the game with antivirus disabled.

Problem 11# Portal 2 Steam error: “No Steam” Button Can’t Play!

Possible Solution: Quit Steam and delete clientregistry.blob in the main steam folder. After that restart steam.

Problem 12# Portal 2 Crash Error – “Virtual Function Call” Error

No possible solution at the moment. Developers claim this will be addressed in an upcoming patch.

Problem 13# Portal 2 Crash error: “Portal2.exe Has Stopped Responding”

Possible Solution #1: Try rolling back (downgrading to a previous version) your video card drivers and see if this will resolve the issue. Usually this is a problem with experimental beta drivers from nVidia or ATI. Doing this helps prevent Portal 2 crash incidents on the PC.

Problem 14# Portal 2 annoying bug: Controls Constantly Spinning Left

Possible Solution: Un-Plug your controller and re-plug it back in.

Problem 15# Portal 2 Glitch: Gestures + Flags Missing/Invisible/Gone

Verify the game cache files or may be some issue at Valve end. Wait and it will resolve.

Problem 16# Portal 2 error: “Failed to load the Launcher DLL”

Possible Solution: Either update or install DirectX or verify the game files. You can force the game to verify the game files by method specified above.

Problem 17# Portal 2 Steam Cloud Not Syncing Saves

No possible solution at the moment. Developers claim this will be addressed in an upcoming patch.

Problem #18 Portal 2 – Cinematic Audio Stutter

Possible Solution: If this is occurring try to update your audio device drivers and uninstall any extra codecs you have installed. The reason most probably is the conflict of audio drivers and codecs installed in your system.

Problem #19 Portal 2 – No File Save Sync Across Platform

Possible Solution: It seems as if only multiplayer progress is saved on the cloud so you may want to finish the game on one platform singleplayer.

Problem #20 – Stuck At Chapter #6

Possible Solution: Start a new game on chapter 6 or load the autosave from the top of the fall.

Problem #21 – Portal 2 Lag Physics Blob Fix

Possible Solution: Set ‘r_threaded_blobulator 0? using console.

Problem #22 – Playstation 3 and PC Save Games Issue

Possible Solution: Saves from PS3 can only be played from PS3 and it seems as if steam cloud only works for multiplayer.

Problem #23 – Portal 2 Crash – Display Driver Has Stopped Working

Possible Solution:

  1. Go to program files/steam/steam apps/common/portal 2.
  2. RIGHT click the portal application.
  3. Click troubleshoot in-compatibility issues.
  4. Run portal 2

Doing this helps prevent Portal 2 crash incidents on the PC.

Problem #24 – Null DLLPortal 2 Crash

Possible Solution: Try changing the Steam region and see if that helps.

Problem #25 – Portal 2 Integrated Intel Graphics

Possible Solution: Portal 2 seem not to go well with integrated graphics chipsets resulting in crashes and black screen. You can try running the game in Windowed mode, it may work or may not but worth a try.

  1. Open Steam, then Play games
  2. Right click the Portal 2, click properties, then Launch options
  3. add -windowed
  4. click ok, then close.

not sure why others are having difficulty, just follow the steps posted and that should fix it.

  • Erik

How do you add Portal.exe in the nVidia control panel? More instruction please, there is no such option when I look.

    • victor

I have the same problem, i think I found it but i’m not sure, if that helps you i went in manage 3D settings and in the program settings tab i selected portal 2.exe and then i changed the CUDA – GPUs to all. didn’t check if it worked for me but is worth the try.

      hope it helps!

      • GCF!

Victor, that’s also correct. Thanks for sharing! This will surely help others.

      • “then i changed the CUDA – GPUs to all”
What does this mean? Where do I find it? What exactly do I change it to?
        Thanks.

      • Endless Urbia

This fixed the issue I was having. I could only play the game for 15 seconds before it kicked me off and “tried to resolve the problem”.

I went in the NVIDIA control panel, under manage 3D settings and since I downloaded Portal 2 from steam I needed to check the box that included software that I don’t have on my computer. There were two Portal 2s to choose from and I changed both of those to use my specific GPU instead of automatic or whatever the other option was.

I’ve been playing for a couple minutes now, hopefully this worked!

    • GCF!

Erik, it’s under ‘Manage 3D settings’. Or, you could just do what victor did below, but that will apply it universally to all your games. The solution I provided above in my post is used if you want to set the GPU settings exclusive to Portal 2 so it doesn’t affect other games.

      Cheers =)

  • 401891

During the final cutscene, after pressing ‘the button’ I get a graphics bug where my arms appear to become detatched from my body. I’m pretty sure that I’ve met the recommended system requirements, and I’ve played around with the graphics settings a bit to try to fix it, but I always have the same problem.

    • GCF

That’s a funny bug. Did this happen after applying the latest patch? Also try verifying the game cache via Steam.

      • 401891

It happened before any of the patches came out, and now, even with the patches, it still happens. I’m fairly sure I’m not the only one with the problem though, because I’ve seen other people with the same problem on youtube. There have been other graphics bugs, but this is by far the most notable, due to the fact that you are actually supposed to see your arms in the cutscene. Anyway, I’ll try installing it on my other computer, and see if that fixes it. Another thing i’ve noticed though, is that on my friends PS3 version there’s no problem. So, I’m assuming that the problem is either with the PC version of the game, or with the PC itself.

  • Most of the “anti-crash” solutions are just “common-bla-bla” things and do not actually help. It’s speculation to it’s best.
I crash every 5-10 minutes, latest drivers and updates, game cache verified multiple times and I tested nearly everything here -> No solution.

I also ran a debugger when Portal 2 crashed (MSVC 2010) and it showed me that it tried to access a portion of the memory which it isn’t allowed to. This looks like an invalid pointer -> Programming Error.

(P.S.: No other games do crash for me)

    • GCF!

It seems Portal 2 doesn’t fit well with your system. Lot of factors can go into crashes, and sometimes you just have to wait for the next patch hoping they will address it. Please do try the fixes I posted here, you might have missed some.

If you’re using a pretty used up PC, this maybe due to some corrupt registries which is common to high-usage systems, due to all the games being installed/uninstalled. Have you tried wiping your registry?

      • Yeah, but my guess is, it’s their DRM-System. Whenever you download portal 2 or make an integrity check, one file will always be reacquired (client.dll). And that file gets then modified after the download to your system “on-the-fly” and bound to your steam-account.

You can read more about this on a thread I opened in the steam-forums (second post): http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1860006

Still my rig is not a bad setup (not more than 1.5 years old and there it was a good build) and Portal 2 is the only game with those issues.

And by “wiping Registry” you meant “clientregistry.blob”, right? No, that I haven’t done yet. If you meant the Windows Registry: Windows just reinstalled for the sake or Portal 2 and it’s still crashing.

    • Boxley

I have the same problem, I’ve tried all of the solutions that apply to me above but still it crashes every 5-10 minutes. I have also dropped my resolution from 1920×1080 to 1224×768, lowered all the graphics settings but nothing I do makes any difference.

      My System:
      CPU: i5 760 @ 3.66ghz
      Motherboard: Asus P7P55DE
      Graphics: GTX 480
      RAM: 4gb Corsair XMS3 DDR3 2000mhz
      OS: Win7 Ultimate
      HDD: 500gb Seagate Barracuda 7500rpm

I only formatted a few weeks ago so there is absolutely no way its a problem with my system, its just what happens when developers focus all their attention on consoles and neglect the PC version. Releasing a game with this many problems is just taking the piss.

      • GCF!

I’m sorry to hear that. You know what, my main system has very similar specs, also using GTX 480, 4gb corsairs and core i5. I can pretty much max out any game I want with minor hiccups, and I guess so should you.

Are other games running smoothly on your unit? It is not unusual for some to eventually find out that their GFX card has a factory defect. If you’re having problems running your other games at full/ultra settings, then your GFX card just *may* be the culprit, sir.

Also, try rolling back your drivers. Try 257.21, one of the more stable versions.

Let me know how that goes.

  • “then i changed the CUDA – GPUs to all”
What does this mean? Where do I find it? What exactly do I change it to?
    Thanks.

    • GCF!

Hi Jeff, this is specifically for nVidia users. If you are one, then open up your nVidia control panel and go to ‘Manage 3D settings’. There’s a list of options you can change there, one of them would be CUDA – GPUs. Set that to ‘All’.

      Cheers

  • GCF!

Hey guys, I updated the fix list. Check from Problems #18 onwards. Hope those help you too!

  • I have the 1st problem, and I have XP and there isn’t a security tab on CSC properties, but I tried run as administrator, but again always crashes to desktop the game. PLEASE HELP!!!

    • GCF!

Hi Kanokanor, have you tried solutions under problems #2 or #3 posted above? It may be a resolution problem or administrative security issue.

  • jamtheman

thank you soooooo much i was stuck thinking i had just wasted a lot of money but the fix cleared portal of all problems and even fixed l4d2 for me.

  • Scott

Hey, I downloaded Portal 2 yesterday, and i’ve not been able to play it. When the game finishes loading, single player or co-op mode starts, but with no video. I can hear instructions, see the crosshair and little icons on screen telling me what buttons to press, gestures to do etc, but just a black screen behind it.

Tried some of these fixes but don’t want to have to spend another 5 hours redownloading it.

I have a radeon 9550 graphics card, which possibly has out of date drivers.. but my computer doesn’t download the “legacy” ones from the AMD website properly so I can’t really fix this.

I also have 2.6 GHz Celeron 2 or something processor. this too slow?

    • GCF!

Hi Scott, I think your system doesn’t meet the game’s minimum requirements. ATI Radeon 9550 only supports Shader Model 2.0 but Portal 2 requires Shader Model 2.0b (Yes, the b is very important!)

You may want to consider upgrading your system.

      • Scott

Thanks a lot! I’m upgrading to a macbook pro for uni at the start of next year, do you think I’d be able to find a cheap graphics card for the meantime that satisfies these requirements so i can play this?

        • GCF!

No prob. I’d recommend the radeon 4670 or 4850 as a low budget interim solution. :)

          • Scott

Awesome. I’ll look into it. oh, also – just so I don’t find myself with more problems – is Intel Celeron CPU 2.60GHz not good enough to play portal 2?

        • GCF!

You’re correct on that. Celeron won’t meet the minimum CPU requirements of Portal 2. The cheapest you could replace that with that will work with Portal 2 is either of the following:

          1. A Intel Pentium 4 with 3.0Ghz speed
          2. An Intel dual core with 2.0 Ghz speed
          3. An AMD64X2

          Cheers

  • Callum

I have a ‘crash to bluescreen’ problem. When I try Portal 2 on the laptop, it crashes the entire computer after a few seconds at the loading screen and forces a restart. This is not random, it happens at the exact same time, every time. I changed the screen width/height to ones that work with other Source games, but it did not work, and the error seems different anyway. It says it has made a log of the error, but I cannot find the log itself, even when I check the technical information. Help?

    • Tyler

      I’m having the same issue

      • Tyler

I found this in the error log

        “C:\DOCUME~1\—\LOCALS~1\Temp\WERb823.dir00\Mini042411-03.dmp
        C:\DOCUME~1\—\LOCALS~1\Temp\WERb823.dir00\sysdata.xml”

the — is where the username was

This was the event log at the time of the error. And those files you put up there look simular to ones in the technical info of my error log, so it could well be the same problem. Also, I verified the Portal 2 file from it’s properties menu, and it said one file could not be verified.

  • Mike

    Hey,

This is a great site and I’m sure many ppl have been helped. I haven’t been able to solve the first problem, the crash to desktop. Happens seemingly randomly, every few minutes, and makes playing the game INFURIATING! I did the owner permissions and whatever else, ran the app as an admin, but nothing seems to stop the crashes. My specs are well up to par, im running a GTX460 with a Phenom X4 955 3.2GHZ processor, 4GB RAM, Win7 64-bit Ultimate version. I suppose I can try rolling back the drivers, is the crashing really an issue with display adaptors?

    • GCF!

Hi Mike! Sorry it took me some time to reply, been busy with my dayjob. Have you solved your issue? Which of the possible solutions were you able to try?

  • kriss

When i launch Portal 2 its loading but then it crashes terlling nothing and bring me back to dekstop what do i do to fix this?

    • GCF!

Hi kriss, which of the solutions above have you tried? Since you cr*cked the game, I suppose there are downloadable cr*ck updates out there that might be able to help you.

  • kriss

and i have the cracked game

  • Johan

Well non of these things works… Plus my error is -Start the game – shows the valve logo – shows the source logo – shows the main loading screen – back to descop and just wtf just happend nothing more happens… It just quit and no errors is on the screen…

  • kyle

i’ve tried all the suggestions and absolutely nothing works. i start the game, the valve logo and other logos come up and then it goes to the main menu, there i choose single player, and start a new game or load a save (it worked before but i stopped after room 8, went back the next day to play it and it stopped working.) i get the loading screen. but then right as everything is getting rendered, the audio starts looping, the screen goes black and flashes a few times, and an error message saying the display driver crashed and recovered comes up. this keeps happening until i terminate the program from the task manager. the specs i have:

    windows 7 64-bit
    4 gb ram
    intel core 2 duo T6500 @2.1ghz each
mobile intel 4 series express chipset family

all the drivers are up to date. cant figure out what else could cause a problem.

    • Oren

I’ve been having the exact same problem. After installing it (from CD) I played for 3 hours or so without any problem. Now when I try to load it I get the same crash process you described.

      • Jaun

Oren, by any chance is your graphics card the same as Kyle’s? i.e mobile intel 4 series express chipset family, because i get this EXACT same error and i have that same graphics card? Is it the graphics cards fault? Cause for me it works fine (enough) after first time installation. It’s just after playing through once and trying to continue where it messes up.

  • Tyler

I have the same problem that you have mentioned, with my game randomly closing. However, I don’t seem to have a CSC folder??? I’m on Windows 7, and the following fixes didn’t work for me.

    • John

I have the same problem, the game is just closing and i didn’t find a CSC folder either, but i have Vista not Windows 7.

  • Guest

I have a comp. with windows XP, 9.6 GB of hard disk space, and all the other requirements. I just installed steam and have entered the product code. When I go to install it says I need 11300 mb of space which is way more than the 7.4 GB requirement! What should I do? Is this normal?

  • jeff

ever since i loaded Portal 2 I’ve experienced sluggish performance with my other games including facebook flash based games. They progressively become more and more choppy and sluggish until finally i have to reboot. Rebooting solves the problem for a limited time and then it all begins again. it feels to me like a navida memory leak but at this stage i’m just guessing.

Has any one else experienced this?

  • tamh

A minor suggestion for all of you who are experiencing sound stutter or sudden mute when something mayor happens in the game. There is a flag in the game console named “snd_legacy_surrond”. Try changing that flag from 1 to 0 (or viceversa). This, apparently, resets the sound system, thus fixing the problem.

  • Faizan

Thanks.. it really worked for me ! Thanks a lot ..!!

  • Stephen

I have the blackscreen on start but i can hear the valve sounds and the background music for the main menu but no image ever.

I know I have the system requirements (i would post my specs but not sure how…) and I dont have a NVidia card I have ATI

Reinstalling Steam by doing following procedure may help fixing Portal 2 crash.

    Close Steam completely.
Open My Computer and open the following directory:
    C:\\Program Files\\Steam\\Steam Apps\\Common\\Portal 2
Right click a file called Portal.exe or similar.
    Select Troubleshoot Compability option.

Ok, so my problem is… it crashes at the end. I get right throgh the ending credits, even the little scene after the credits, and then it crashes to desktop (Portal2.exe stopped working). Anyone know what the problem could be?
I know I’ve finished the game already and it shouldn’t matter, but I also know that the menu screen is different after that, and I can’t get to see it because of that crash.
Any idea of what it could be and how to fix it?

I’m experiencing the good ol’ black screen in game issue.
that same one where you see the cross-hairs, hear the game, can move but otherwise cannot see anything? yeah, there are tons of black screen fixes here but i don’t know which one to choose. i tried one which sucked about 5 or 6 hours of trying and re-trying so i don’t want to go through that again.

i downloaded the new portal but when i open it, it loaded and it should come up with PORTAL image and play single player, play cooperative game, options and quit selection button but i wait for a long time and start moving my cursor and i just heard the ‘blup’ sound when your cursor hits the selection button (i just simply move my cursor when it comes up with the white screen) and the screen is just white screen

Hey, every time I try to run Portal 2 it says that “portal2.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close”. It also did the same thing for a few source games (Half Life 2 and both episodes) games games except it would say “hl2.exe” instead of “portal.exe”.

Hey, my problem doesn’t appear in this list. I get to the menu and when I choose single player the game closes. My specs are:

    -Intel Core i7-3610QM
    -NVIDIA Geforce GTX 660M/2GB GDDR5
    -8GB of RAM
-750GB of HDD at 7200 RPM
