Alice Madness Returns Crash Fix and Fixes to Errors

Welcome to my compiled list of Alice Madness Returns crash fixes. But first, props to the developers who have overcome hitches of the first installment and transformed the Alice franchise into a fantastic treat. Now, getting the game up and running is another thing, so here is a compiled hot fix list that may help you as it did me.

Fixes for Alice Madness Returns Crash, Errors, Freezes

Problem 1# Alice Madness Returns Crash, Freezes on Xbox 360

If you have installed Alice Madness Returns on hard drive of your console, you may come across random freezes. Try running the game off disc to resolve this issue. Doing this helps reduce Alice Madness Returns crash problems.

Those who are experiencing Disc Spinning sound with Xbox 360 when the game starts, have some patience, I will update If I found a workaround on that.

Problem 2# Alice Madness Returns Surround Display Tweak – 3D

Those of you who either have ATI Eyefinity or Nvidia Surround display may notice menu squashed in center when you try to run the game in tri resolution. You may not be able to see the menu in certain cases, while the game works fine on single monitor.

If you are experiencing any of these issues, you may want to tweak the Alice.ini to fix this issue.

Go to:

\Documents\My Games\Alice Madness Returns\AliceGame\Config\AliceEngine. ini

and change these resolutions to your desired resolution to be able to play the game on your center screen without disabling surround setup.

ResX=6000
ResY=1080

If you want to disable the FPS cap, do the tweak below:

MaxSmoothedFrameRate=60
UseVsync=False

Doing this helps reduce Alice Madness Returns crash problems.

Problem 3# Alice Madness Returns Error – Mouse Spinning, Cursor Movement

If you have any USB device plugged as you start the game, you may notice the cursor goes automatically to the top left of the screen. If so, unplug any of these devices and restart the game. Doing this helps reduce Alice Madness Returns mouse problems.

Problem 4# Alice Madness Returns Crash – Controls Problem, Unresponsive buttons and Malfunctioning

If you are experiencing several unresponsive buttons or mouse/keyboard malfunctioning, you may want to disable all the USB devices plugged into your computer, and restart the game. Make sure the game picks up your default controller setup. Doing this helps reduce Alice Madness Returns crash problems.

Problem 5# Alice Madness Returns Crash – Framerate Fix using 60 FPS Tweak

Open Alice.ini in text editor, you can find the file located here:

\Documents\My Games\Alice Madness Returns\AliceGame\Config\AliceEngine.ini

and Set these to your desired values for framerate boost:

MaxSmoothedFrameRate=60
UseVsync=False

Doing this definitely smoothens the gameplay helps reduce Alice Madness Returns crash problems.

Problem 6# Alice Madness Returns Crash – Auto Save Corrupted

If your game froze while playing and you were forced to restart the game, you may lose all your progress if you have been relying on auto save. In this case, it would most probably be corrupted, so make sure you are saving progress manually at the start of each chapter.

Problem 7# Alice Madness Returns Controller Support

If you are trying to play the game using your Xbox 360 or PS3 controller, make sure you have unplug all other third party controllers or USB devices. The game may not work well if you have third party controllers connected to your PC.

Problem 8# Alice Madness Returns Has Stopped Working

Try to run the game windowed and/or in administrator mode. Many users attest that doing this helps reduce Alice Madness Returns crash problems or error pop ups.

Problem 9# How to Play Alice Madness Returns Windowed

  • Navigate to your Alice Madness Returns Folder.
  • Go into Game\Alice2\Engine\Config
  • Open up BaseEngine.ini in any document editor.
  • Ctrl+F or scroll down to the [SystemSettings] area of options.
  • Look for Fullscreen=True and change it to Fullscreen=False.
  • Save the .ini and load up the game.
  • Enjoy Windowed Mode.

Problem 10# Alice Madness Returns Crash, Freezing on Playstation 3 (PS3)

When you start the game on your PS3, it goes to a black screen and then just stops, stays on the black screen and then dies completely. You have to manually turn off your PS3 to restore it. In order to resolve this issue, make sure you have the latest firmware installed because this may be happening due to a firmware conflict.

Confirm that you have updated the PlayStation 3 computer entertainment system with the most recent system software . You can check the version you have installed on your PlayStation 3 by selecting:

  1. Settings.
  2. Then System Settings.
  3. Then System Information.

You can also try creating a new Playstation user account.

  1. Press the PS button the controller to enter the PLAYSTATION 3 XBM (XrossMediaBar).
  2. Select the Users tab.
  3. Select Create a New User Account and press the X button.
  4. Enter a name for the account and login to the new user account.
  5. Try loading the game.

Doing this helps reduce Alice Madness Returns crash problems on the PS3.

Problem 11# Alice Madness Returns Crash – No Sound Bug

No sound during the cinematics ? try to run the game in stereo sound settings. You can select the settings from the drop down menu of your audio manager.

    For some reason this game seems to hate two things: Iy ctashes when I:

    Have some system interruption ( somewbody pops out on my communicator, antivirus updates himself etc)
    2. And most bizzarre. When I use too much CTRL button. seriously. Remap your keyboard not to use CTRL at all As for low fps simply turn “low” on physx option

    I’ve got the game installed CD pc perfectly and everything and ive been in support for hours now with no help. Whenever i start to run the game or hit play, all that happens in it says the error report and my only options are end game, etc. Just like whenever internet explorer crashes, or any other program. Please help >.>

    Can someone confirm (please post back here) a Pent.D940 (3.2GHz) will not run this PC game? I know CORE2DUO is listed as minimum and all other hardware in my system is above minimum. The game plays well for a few minutes then the system locks up. A hard reboot is required to recover Windows desktop. No relevant system/app events are logged. System temps are confirmed OK. OS reload did not have any effect – even tried WIN7x86 and same problem. Will upgrading my CPU resolve the problem?

    Thanks,
    RadWar

      RadWar, the dual core is required because of its multitasking capabilities. If you lower the setting all to minimum, it should play just fine… But seriously, update your shit.

      • RadWar

        @CJ,

        Thank you for the reply. My XP [gaming] system still locks up with all video settings at a minimum. I _should_ upgrade the CPU to C2D – it’s just a pain to pull the processor and disturb the h2o lines if I don’t need to… Also, from what I have read in the EA forum the PC release has quite a few bugs so I am not yet convinced a newer processor will resolve the crashes. I was hoping for a confirmation there is an instruction set requirement on CORE2DUO and newer processors that is causing the D940 to crash. Otherwise a CPU upgrade may be a waste of money/time…

        Thanks,
        RadWar

    I installed the ps3 drivers to my PC and tested they work. But when I load the game the controller does not work. I unplugged my keyboard and mouse with no luck. I also check the game settings to see if there’s some sort of option to switch but did not work. Any help?

  • Amanda

    This seems like a tentative solution as it hasn’t worked all the way yet… But my copy of AtMR for PS3 came with a code for the original Alice game… And once that finished installing the game stopped killing my PS3… But it’s still installing all the software from the disc so we shall see…

    But just be advised it had been doing the black-screen-transmission-kill thing up until this moment… Hope it works…

  • IjustwanttoplayAlice

    I’m running a ATI Radeon 2100 graphics card which I think comes under the AMD 740G Chipset, is this why my game isn’t working?

  • mewanttoplay

    I have a 9800gt geforce graphic card and the rest of my specs are above the minimum requirements and I updated everything but the game just won’t run on my computer does anyone know why?

  • Dodger

    Great article!! I have an Eyefinity system and I thought I wasted my money buying this game b/c of all the glitches. This helped out a lot.

  • Kayla

    The only major problem I am having is I can’t open the umbrella to beat the Menacing ruin. I focus on it and press E but it won’t open and I can’t beat it any other way unless I take a friend’s advice and restart the game. I don’t feel like throwing away 2 and a half hours worth of gaming.

    I have a problem! I wanted to play Alice madness returns game on the pc but it won’t open it! The install went correctly, but now every time I try to play it, it says: ”The exception — unknown software exception occured in the application at location — click ok to terminate the program.” What should I do? Please tell me!

  • emma

    I installed the game and it worked fine for a day,but then I could only play for a few minutes because it crashed and said “This software has been modified or tampered with.Please install original software.”
    What can I do?I really wouldn’t want to uninstall the whole thing and start again…

  • Sahara_Kaszan

    I’m on Ch.1, in the Hatter’s Domain, and I keep falling through the elevating platforms over lava. Not off, THROUGH. If I jump repeatedly, I can buy a few seconds, but then you can’t fight beasties or activate switches.
    I have the PC version, my system meets the requirements, and I have current drivers. Any ideas?
