Driver San Francisco PC Crash Fix and Fixes to Errors

Here is a working list of crash fix solutions for DriverSan Francisco for the PC. Surprisingly, many PC gamers including myself found DriverSan Francisco to be a really entertaining game, perhaps at par with its console counterparts. Of course it didn’t come without any hitches, add to that the fact that it was released via Steam which can usually cause some probable crashes, errors, bugs, and freezing.

DriverSan Francisco for PC Crash Fix and Fixes to Errors, Freezes, Screen Lines, Launch Crash, Menu Crash, Dual / Multi Display Issues, FPS drops and Performance Issues

Problem #1 – DriverSan Francisco for PC Crash Fix – Random crashes, Crash to Desktop, Black screen upon Launch / Startup

If you’re game randomly crashes upon launching the game, ensure or try the following:

  • Update your nVidia / ATI graphics drivers
  • Try using only one GPU first (turn the other one off via your grpahics control panel)
  • Turn off SLI / Crossfire
  • Unplug any non-Microsoft or generic controllers that are attached. If this works, you can try setting the controller mode to ‘Xbox 360 Controller Emulator’ so you no longer have to unplug the controllers next time around.
  • Disable anti-aliasing and filtering
  • Disable V-sync — also solves shearing/tearing issues
  • Disable background apps, and turn off your anti-virus software
  • Run through our list of general fixes, which will most likely resolve your problems

Problem #2 – DriverSan Francisco for PC Menu Crash

If you’re crashing in the Multiplayer Menu, try the following:

  • Verify your Steam cache and game files
  • Find the DriverSan Francisco .exe file, right-click and Run as Administrator. You can also try going into properties and launching it in compatibility mode for older Windows versions.
  • Unplug any non-Microsoft or generic controllers that are attached. If this works, you can try setting the controller mode to ‘Xbox 360 Controller Emulator’ so you no longer have to unplug the controllers next time around.
  • Run through our list of general fixes for Steam games

Problem #3 – DriverSan Francisco Screen Problems – Random Lines, Tearing, Black screen

If you are getting random lines across your screen while playing, this is most likely due to your graphics cards not able to handle Fullscreen mode. You can switch to windowed mode in-game, but if you want to set it to windowed mode by default, do the following:

Edit graphics.ini located in My DocumentsUbisoftDriver San Francisco with a text editor (like Notepad) and change the following line:

Fullscreen = 1

to

Fullscreen = 0

Then save the file.

Problem #4 – DriverSan Francisco for PC Racing Wheel Problems – Cannot be detected / Not responding

Make sure your graphics card is supported by DriverSan Francisco for PC. Check out this excerpt from the official game site regarding supported racing wheels:

Quoted from the store page:

Supported Peripherals: Windows-compliant keyboard, mouse, wired and wireless X360 controller, Logitech Momo Racing Force Feedback steering wheel, Thrustmaster Rally GT Force Feedback Pro Clutch Edition steering wheel, Thrustmaster Ferrari GT 2-in-1 Force Feedback steering wheel, Thrustmaster Ferrari GT Experience 3-in-1 steering wheel, Thrustmaster Ferrari F430 Force Feedback steering wheel, Thrustmaster Universal Challenge 5-in-1 steering wheel.

For Logitech G25 and G27, you can force it to work via the following method, but take note that you will have to redo it everytime you start the game:

Credits to NascarVike from the Ubi forums for this fix:

Short version:

  1. Open the Driver San FranciscoInput x046d folder you’ll find two folders and a file named ‘description’. Copy and paste the 0xc295 inside the same folder and rename it 0xc299 if you have a G25, or 0xc29B for a G27. Thanks to NascarVike at UBI forums for this solution.
  2. Make sure you have the “Pedals Reported As Combined” unchecked in your wheel’s Windows controller panel.
  3. In case the steering doesn’t respond when you satrt the game, alt-tab to desktop, go into Shift mode and come back to the car a few times till the steering responds. Once it starts it’s fine.

Full version of instructions with more detail:

If you open the Driver San FranciscoInput x046d folder you’ll find two folders and a file named ‘description’. That file contains three lines:

“Logitech
0xca03 – Momo Racing Force
0xc295 – Momo Force”

Copy and paste the 0xc295 inside the same folder and rename it 0xc299 if you have a G25.

Just like in TDU 2 you will have to enable the spring and damper strength effects in your wheel’s Windows control panel (open ‘devices and printers’ from the start menu, right click on the controller icon and select controller properties.

In the wheel’s configuration panel you check the three boxes under Overall Strength effects and tweak the settings to what you like best. You can choose a high Spring Strength Effect, it increases the overall intensity (mine’s at 65%). The higher the Damper Strength Effect the heavier your wheel will be (mine’s at 35%). You don’t want to set the centering effect too high because it tends to cancel out the FFB effects’ definition (mine’s at 20%).

The good news is the game is playable at 900° (there is no deadzone and the steering is responsive enough for driving casually) although because the action is so fast-paced I lowered mine to 540° which works perfectly.

Note that I have a problem everytime I start the game: while the pedals work from the get-go, the steering doesn’t respond. I usually have to alt-tab to desktop, go into Shift mode and come back to the car a few times before the steering responds. But once it starts it’s fine.

Finally, I took a quick look at some files in the input folders and they allow for a good deal of FFB customization so if anyone feels like tampering with the values, see if they can optimize the FFB effects for the G25.

Problem #5 – DriverSan Francisco for PC Crashes when clicking the Steam ‘Play’ button

Unplug any non-Microsoft or generic controllers that are attached. If this works, you can try setting the controller mode to ‘Xbox 360 Controller Emulator’ so you no longer have to unplug the controllers next time around.

If the above solution doesn’t working, try going directly to your steamapps folder and run the game directly from the Driver: SF exe file there. You can also try right-clicking the exe icon, then click ‘Run As Administrator.’

Problem #6 – DriverSan Francisco for PC connection fix – Cannot connect to other players

This is commonly regarded as a router issue. It means your router may be configured too securely for casual games such asDriver: SF for PC. To fix this, and so that you won’t have to deal with any port forwardingyou may want to consider setting your router to DMZ mode. Full instructions in doing this may be found here: http://windows.crashfixes.com/setting-up-dmz-on-your-router/

Problem #7 – How to Enable 3D Vision for Tweaking in DriverSan Francisco for PC (thanks to brunowerneck from the Steam forums)

Rename game’s .exe from “driver.exe” to anything else, like “driver11.exe” or “dsfrancisco.exe”, so the Nvidia’s 3D info box should say “not rated” when game loads.

Alt-Tab out of the game to fix shadows in 3D when necessary (press ESC before Alt-Tab). Yes, this works great, thanks to Kingping at Nvidia forums for this solution.
